NFT: What are your go to movies when you actually have downtime?

eric2425ny : 4/18/2021 10:51 pm
This is inspired by Grey Pilgrim’s post last night. This isn’t a comprehensive list of films I would rewatch, just the top 25 or so. I’ll start:

Comedy:

Dumb and Dumber
Step Brothers
Old School
The Other Guys
The Burbs
Wedding Crashers
Swingers
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Dirty Work
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Uncle Buck
There’s Something About Mary
Swingers

Action/Serious Movies:

Shawshank Redemption
Goodfellas
Godfather 1 and 2
The Game
Inception
The Dark Knight
Training Day
Man on Fire
The Equalizer
Collateral
Heat
Predator

I'm re-watching breaking bad right now. In my opinion, it's the best series from start to finish that I've seen. Game of Thrones could have been if they didn't botch the last season like they did. To the OP, Dumb & Dumber, Goodfellas & Shawshank are three of my favorites of all time. Other movies I've enjoyed watching multiple times:

Comedy:
Superbad
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
40 Year Old Virgin
Super Troopers
Beerfest
Liar Liar
Me, Myself & Irene
Kingpin
Meet the Parents
Dodgeball
Happy Gilmore
Dazed and Confused
Tommy Boy

Drama/Action
Pulp Fiction
Fight Club
Forrest Gump
Catch me if you can
Wolf of Wall Street
Inception
The Revenant
Memento
The Matrix
Prisoners
Blow
The Prestige
Casino
25th Hour
Fight Club
Rounders

I was watching The Departed last night. I couldn't find anything even close to interesting on Netflix so I just went with that.

Just a side note, as much as I love that movie, it feels so outdated (it is) but with all the flip phones (and stuff I haven't seen in forever) make me actually feel like I'm getting up there. It is a good film with an amazing cast but it really didn't age well and I don't get as enthusiastic about it as I used to, especially when I talked about it to other people back in 2006-2007.

Also watched A Clockwork Orange the other night lol
Eyes Wide Shut
adamg : 4:21 am : link
Might be my favorite movie.
Some
Spyder : 8:56 am : link
faves.

Lawrence of Arabia - never gets old, the cinematography, countless memorable shots, the music, and the classic actors, a David Lean masterpiece.

Apocalypse Now - ditto the above except it is a Francis Ford masterpiece.

Caddyshack - hilarious every time.

Holy Grail - same same......
Mary Poppins
Bill L : 9:00 am : link
Beauty and the Beast
Guardians of the Galaxy I
ah forgot to add
Bill L : 9:00 am : link
Captain Blood
Robin Hood (the Errol Flynn version)
Must sees if channel surfing
Maggot Brain : 9:07 am : link
Tombstone, any of the Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns (preferably The Good, Bad, and the Ugly), Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Slapshot for comedic relief.
Add in the fugitive
oghwga : 9:42 am : link
And the martian to the action side and the original the in-laws to the comedy side.

Serpentine Shel.
A few Westerns: The Magnificent Seven, Rio Bravo, Vera Cruz.
Klaatu : 9:44 am : link
Comedies: The Marx Brothers, Duck Soup and Horse Feathers. Abbott & Costello, Who Done It and In Society.

Ditto for Bill L, The Adventures of Robin Hood and Captain Blood (and I'll throw in The Sea Hawk).

Film Noir: Laura, The Third Man, This Gun for Hire. I'll include some modern film noir: Mulholland Falls and L.A. Confidential.

Sci-Fi: The Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, Them.

These are just a few movies that I could watch over and over again. Never get tired of them.
Cinema Paradiso (not the directors cut)
rmc3981 : 9:53 am : link
Big Night
Chariots of Fire
Field of Dreams
Bull Durham
Eastern Promises
Godfather I and II
No one has Big Lebowski
cjac : 10:32 am : link

TBH, alot of downtime is youtube

I say there staring at the movie logo for like 30 seconds on whatever streamer it’s on, couldn’t bring myself to watch it again. But it’s calling me lol...
Oh

I didn’t see it mentioned but I only skimmed, I just started lord of the rings again. Been a while maybe five years plus. I’m doing all the uncut versions. Now that is one that has aged very very well. It’s a great rewatch.
I’m obviously watching it in stages
djm : 8:45 pm : link
Hour here and hour there.

I seem to do that more than watch new movies start to finish, lately. With all the sports on this time of year it’s hard to watch much of anything else.

Love that movie, but I could never believe the part where he’s texting on the phone keypad n his pants. Love Vera Farmiga in that movie!

I mean you've been watching the Giants 2012-present, no?

I would guess that you are desensitized to filth and the ultra-horrors.

As a high school student in the early 00s, I can say that the cell phone texting pocket scene had some credibility. There were some creative people in my school who would find ways to outsmart the teacher and it was actually pretty creative how some kids got away with sending 20 texts a class. That number would have been way higher but I don't think Unlimited texting had been invented yet.

The flip phone era was a short one, but while it lasted, I enjoyed when you could read the drama of the scene by the way someone in a TV show/film would close or open their phone.

Trading Places is one of my all-time favorites. Can't miss with that one.
Here's an off the beaten trail choice...
BamaBlue : 4/22/2021 11:27 am : link
"The Best Years of our Lives" is a forgotten gem. It won 7 Academy Awards in 1946, including best lead actor and best picture. It chronicles the lives of three returning WWII veterans (Army, Navy, and Army Air Corps). It shows their difficulties adapting to live after the war and is gripping, dramatic and insightful.
Enjoy the more "recent" comedies with downtime like
NYGgolfer : 4/22/2021 11:57 am : link
Wedding Crashers, Old School or the like.

Boomers and their intimacy of long days of work and telling everyone about it... Am I right?

Watching There Will Be Blood as I type this, by the way.
