NFT: Acuna and Soto comparisons

Longtimelurker : 4/18/2021 11:11 pm
Two great players that will hopefully have long careers. How would you compare them to say Griffey and Bonds in the early 90s say 1993 before Griffey started getting hurt and Bonds got on the juice?
That’s a great question

Acuna Jr. is a true 5 tool player. It’s incredible to realize that he is still improving. Even though he is the best lead off hitter in baseball I wish that Atlanta would bring in another lead off hitter so that Acuna Jr. could move to the #2 spot.

Soto is an amazing talent as well and let’s not forget about Tatis Jr.
Soto

Soto is a FAR better hitter but not as toolsy as Acura. The eye at the plate Soto has is u heard of for a 21yr old. I think he will be a better Puljos ceiling wise.

Soto, Acuna and Tatis are REALLY making the game fun. And they are super talented. Bonds and Griffey type talent? - yep. Its always about injury and staying power - 162 takes its toll.

The polar bear is next level but would love to see him climb into that pool - when he's rolling he's also fun to watch.

A better Pujols? I wouldn’t go that far, but yes Soto is an excellent with great plate discipline. I’m more of tools guy, so I prefer Acuña if I had to start a franchise tomorrow.
Why compare them
pjcas18 : 4/19/2021 8:13 am : link
to Griffey and Bonds and not Trout, who in the end may be better than both if he remains healthy.

Is it just b/c of the defense aspect? Trout may not be a prennial gold glover, but he's no slouch.

I kind of feel like Trout is criminally underappreciated by MLB and in kind, by fans.

They are both

amazing, especially given their age, but if there's one guy I wouldnt want to go against in a big spot its Soto 100%. That guy scares the crap out of me. As a Mets fan I'm not thrilled about playing against them for the next 15+ years.

Major League Baseball is embarrassingly bad at promoting and marketing its star players
Both are just great young players first of all

Mentioned above that Soto has superb plate discipline and clutch hitting, and Acuna probably has as good and wide a set of tools in the game today. He is a weapon.

I think I read Acuna got hurt again last night so he might be on the shelf for a bit.

Don't worry, the Nats will let him walk just like they did with Rendon and will probably do with Trea Turner.

I think the Lerners will go all in to keep Soto. Harper, despite all of his hype, was inconsistent year to year. So they didn't want to pay for that. And Rendon was very likely leaving anyway and they didn't want to pay a near 30 year old the money Boras was looking for. Soto is much younger and really seems destined for success every year. He's must see TV and will keep asses in seats.

I was thinking of Trout for Acuna Jr. but I didn’t want to be called a homer.
I am not saying that Acuna Jr. is as good as Trout I just think that he is similar to Trout in a multiple ways.

You’re right that Trout is under-appreciated and that’s a shame. It’s probably because of the Angels failure to build a playoff team around him. He is the best player of his generation and a lock for the HOF.

He did, the Braves have been devastated with injuries so far this season. Hopefully Acuna Jr. Isn’t out for long because he is having an MVP level start.

Exactly as it pertains to Acuna. He can win a game in every way it can be won. Soto’s combination of youth, patience, power, and contact skills are a true rarity in the sport’s history. If I was choosing, I’d take Acuna. I’d also take age 20 Mike Trout over the both of them.

Bonds’ career followed a more natural (ironically) growth path than the 3 players mentioned above or Ken Griffey Jr. But I will say that Bonds at his Pittsburgh peak is a better player than Griffey at his peak.
Guerrero Jr is off to a good start this season. It'll be interesting
Ira : 4/19/2021 11:42 am : link
to see how he develops.

Acuna is just uber-talented, ball really flies off his bat. Trout comparisons are on target imv...
Acuña was off to a blistering start
Dave in PA : 4/19/2021 1:35 pm : link
And in a much better lineup than Soto where he can’t just be pitched around like Soto is these days. Acuña has had torrid streaks in the past so it’ll be interesting to see if he can somewhat keep up this maniacal pace he’s started, because he’s capable of putting up running away MVP numbers. Hopefully the ab injury is minor.

I would definitely take 22 year old Trout over both also.
