NFT: Plug-in hybrids

Gman11 : 4/19/2021 8:11 am
Anybody have any experience with plug-in hybrid cars? I'm looking at the Toyota RAV4 Prime. It looks pretty nice to me and qualifies for the $7500 federal tax credit.
my parents have the newer regular Rav hybrid

and I had the 2017 Rav hybrid. They are very well made cars, gas is upwards of 40mpg. Don't have any experience but I'm not a fan of the pricepoint to be honest. You're likely going to be well over $40k when you factor in taxes and fees so you're going to be around $35k after the credit. I think in the Prime the battery will get you 40 miles per so which is likely plenty for going around town or if you gut stuck with no gas in an emergency.

It comes down to what you want it for and what the important factors are for you.
i was looking into this recently

and everything I was reading was saying the Rav 4 prime was the best option out there in terms of value

kia sorrento one is due out very soon. I have the Sorrento hybrid more then 40 mpg around town. I wanted the Highlander but price and my mechanics advice to steer clear of ctv trasmissions moved me towards Kia.
Also in the market.

But can you share the details on the federal tax credit ?

I know it’s not plug in, but does anyone have experience with the Lexus UX Hybrid?
My next car will be a plug in hybrid

Just makes too much sense to me to get 25-40 miles of EV driving. Use no gas on short runabouts at all. But the benefits of a gas engine for travel anywhere. The Volvo Im looking at is also a 400hp vehicle so its fun to drive as well.

Here's a link, doesn't look like any of the Lexus' qualify.

has a Tesla, which is full plug-in. He recently took a long road trip and had to stop for 45 minutes a few times along the way to charge it. That sounds like a PIA.

I agree. Full electric doesn't make much sense yet - a gas tank is going to be necessary for most people for the short and medium term.

Yup, miserable.
I have the Prius Prime
Kevin_in_Pgh : 4/19/2021 10:28 am : link
and can get 20+ miles per full charge. Most days, that's more than enough for running errands, etc. And when I need to go further, it's just like having a regular Prius.

I'm about a year in and have put about 6,300 miles on it. I am getting about 112 mpg to this point - but it goes up or down depending on whether I take any long trips (e.g. back and forth to visit NJ from Pittsburgh).
I seriously looked at full electric
Gman11 : 4/19/2021 12:07 pm : link
But I don't think they are ready for taking trips. For one thing they don't necessarily get the range that they say. The VW ID.4 was rated 250 miles, but Car and Driver only got 190.Then there is the charging time. And, the price is still a sticking point.
Is the Prime RAV4 still available?
widmerseyebrow : 4/19/2021 12:10 pm : link
I thought I read somewhere that they didn't produce that many and they're mostly sold out.

In any case I'm hoping for some more Toyota models to go Prime in the coming years. Got an expanding family so a Sienna Prime would be nice.

As mentioned above plug in hybrid just makes a lot of sense.
From what i understand

dealerships are not getting the RAV4 Prime, but you can order one. At least that's what I was told. I think I'm going to go for it.
