Does WFT trading up for Lance make you nervous?

Sean : 4/19/2021 6:50 pm
I have no idea what to make of Trey Lance, and frankly neither does anyone. The guy has barely played. The prospect of another Patrick Mahomes is enough for teams to make that leap though with regards to Lance. A lot of rumors have WFT being very high on Lance. That, coupled with this tweet from Rapaport - maybe they could pull off a trade to get him.

The #Dolphins have already made two moves in the NFL Draft and they may not be done yet: Sources say they’ve received calls from teams looking to trade up to No. 6 and it is something they’re considering. Lot of things in play, but Miami could be at it again.

I’m indifferent as a Giant fan, chances are Lance is middle of the road at best. It’ll be interesting to see if WFT can pull it off.

1) I am not high on Lance especially if he isn't given proper redshirt time

2) Washington has very suspect OL and they will be giving up picks that could have fixed that
This is the team that gave you Dwayne Haskins so NO
Ivan15 : 4/19/2021 6:57 pm : link
Oh wait, that was the Redskins.
Lance is light on reps...
bw in dc : 4/19/2021 6:59 pm : link
but he is an enormous talent. Considerably more talented than Haskins.

And the old regime drafted Haskins. It's an entirely new regime at WFT right now.
Yes,
AcidTest : 4/19/2021 7:07 pm : link
but they would have to give up an enormous amount of draft capital to be able to have any chance of getting him. That will weaken their team going forward, and as others have noted, Lance has very few reps. But they probably don't expect him to play this year any way. Fitz is their starter this year.

I doubt they will give up all the picks required

No he doesn’t worry me so much.

I hope they overpay. By a lot.
Not really

I think Lance looks real, but he isn't enough to make up for a shitty owner.

So tired of threads like this one.

If (name of NFC East Rival) gets (Player X) does that make you nervous/upset/worried, etc?

No it doesn't.

I expect all our rivals will get a good pick in RD-1 and so will the Giants.

Jim, in fairness to Sean, QB is the most important position in the NFL. This is kinda like asking a Titans fan, 'Does Jacksonville getting Lawrence make you nervous?'
It's not an unreasonable question
Go Terps : 4/19/2021 8:09 pm : link
I'd rather they not get Lance.

This.

It's a draft. Everybody gets to pick players. Even if you pick first overall, everybody else gets to pick guys, too.

The WFT might draft a promising QB prospect. So? Why be nervous? It's up to the Giants to draft well and put together a good team. The other teams will do what they do.
it would be classic if they traded up to 6
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 4/19/2021 8:15 pm : link
and someone else traded up to 4 ahead of them. Unlikely that they make the trade before 6 is on the clock but....
Dallas had a dozen Probowlers when we beat them in '07.
FStubbs : 4/19/2021 8:18 pm : link
Actually, if you look at all 4 Superbowl titles the Giants won, the NFC East was strong in each of those years. In 1986, WTF was 0-3 against the Giants, but 14-2 vs everyone else, for example. The 1990 NFC East almost had 4 playoff teams.

So - WTF can do whatever they want in the draft and roll the dice on Lance. We need to get a player that helps the team win with our pick (preferably IMO an offensive lineman).

They need OL and other areas. I can see them making a play next offseason like the Rams did. Wilson, Rogers, Ryan etc.

The last thing Washington needs is a developmental QB.
About as nervous
GMen72 : 4/19/2021 9:15 pm : link
as the average WFT fan is of DJ. So, nope!
I don't want them to get him, he looks like the real deal to me
rasbutant : 4/19/2021 9:16 pm : link
I wouldn't be upset if the Giants drafted him.

Trading to 6 would cost a lot, but I've seen plenty of mocks where he makes it to the Pats at 15. So a trade up to 14 wouldn't keep them from building a team around him. Which sadly they already have a pretty good team.

Bad post? Why?
makes me think miami got too cute
GiantsFan84 : 4/19/2021 9:31 pm : link
if they are looking to move down from 6 i think it means they think pitts and chase will both be gone and that they completely misevaluated the top of the draft

unless they are just working on that contingency just in case
How many games has he played? Division II?

Actually it's not. Lawrence won a NC as a true Frosh along w about a million more reps at a much higher level. Can Lance be a stud? Sure. But worry. Geez. Schedule heat QBs get drafted in are 1. Mahomes is literally the only one on the last 5 years who has he truly special. Not even Watson has shown to be a true top 5 guy.

Can't lose sleep over this one just yet

They're not getting Lance
NINEster : 12:40 am : link
Unless Saleh or Shanahan let him drop.
Even if he's a great talent...
Grizz99 : 4:52 am : link
The weak offensive line (made weaker by his acquisiton) will destroy the kid.
If i were a GM I would build my offensive line Before drafting my QB and for several reasons. I would want the QB to be effectively immediately while he's on a rookie contract; so he would have to be the final piece not the first. And two, I wouldn't want him to lose confidence and develop loose feet. Three ..injury.
We just saw what a crappy line did to a superbowl winning QB and how it compromised Jones's game.
Fitzpatrick scares me next year. He's been so many places that he should acclimate quickly and i think he's a decent QB. He doesn't occupy immense cap space. Give him help and with that front seven on D. they could be tough.
competition.
At the moment no. I have no idea how good or bad or mediocre
Blue21 : 6:27 am : link
he will be in the NFL. I'm more concerned about the Giants pick.
No.
Britt in VA : 7:13 am : link
1. No rookie QB ever worries me, until they actually pan out.

2. WFT has been the one team we have consistently owned no matter what they do. Until they start beating our lowly team regularly, I'm not worried. I don't buy into their hype.
They are officially in QB hell

is a good coach, so you've got to expect them to be improving. What's going on at Dallas and Philly is much less clear, but we really can't complain about having to take WFT seriously now.
Yes, a little nervous.
chick310 : 8:47 am : link
Washington has a pretty decent starting decent roster and some guys that can move the chains on Offense and harass the passer on Defense. If they find a reliable QB that can stop the revolving-door they have had under center then easy to see how they can add a few wins to last years' total.
Washington is still Washington.
an_idol_mind : 8:52 am : link
They will always find a way to mess a good thing up.
This should make everybody feel better.....

Dan Snyder buys out minority owners, now owns 100% of WFT - ( New Window )
Mahomes had one important gift
NoPeanutz : 9:06 am : link
that Lance doesn't have when he came into the league. Getting drafted by a team at the top of the conference (34 wins in the previous three years). WFT is a team with a losing record, so Lance will have to be twice the quarterback Mahomes is in order to make an immediate impact. Also, he will have to overcome the Snyder factor.
No, I think Lance has the highest bust factor
Section331 : 9:08 am : link
of any of the potential 1st round QB's, with the possible exception of Mac Jones (I'm not convinced he has the arm strength). There are too many red flags in Lance's profile - just over one year as a starter, played at the Alabama of FCS, and has only been playing QB for a couple of years - to take a chance on him that high in the draft.

Let WFT go for it, if it works out, good for them.

With Prescott’s enormous contract on the books. Do you realize Prescott has a $47mm cap hit in 2024? You read that right.

The Giants are in QB Hope. It's somewhere between Heaven and Hell and the roads signs are somewhat confusing.
No because I am not on the Lance bandwagon - they would be trading up
PatersonPlank : 9:22 am : link
for basically an unknown. He's:
- played one season, and that was over a year ago
- he played 1 game I believe this season
- he played in 1-AA (now FCS)
- his team was dominant against extremely weak talent. Its like a big powerhouse High School program played a school half their size
- not one of his opponents will sniff the NFL
- the only FBS program to offer him was Rutgers (yes that Rutgers)

Who the hell knows if this guy will be good. Yes he has skills. Based on this I would not be using a 1st rd pick on the guy
The best QB in the division was a supplemental fourth-round pick.
Philly traded up for Wentz that year, which looked like a good move until it didn't. The Giants and Redskins drafted their next-gen franchise QBs in 2019. Haskins is gone, and Jones is a question mark. Remember when we worried that RGIII would be tormenting us into the 2020s, or that Vick and the Dream Team would be unstoppable?

Lance could be very good, or not. If Washington decides to pay up for that lottery ticket, so be it. The odds will be against him, just as they are against almost every rookie QB. It will be more fun to watch him than a retread like Ryan Fitzpatrick or Case Keenum or Alex Smith (amazing comeback aside).

wouldn’t make me nervous, it might be a nice long term move by WFT, I think Lance is going to need a lot of time. But his upside is through the roof.

It would actually be good as that would mean for the next year or two he might struggle while NYG are loading up for playoffs
If you really think about it....
Britt in VA : 9:34 am : link
Lance is comparable to Daniel Jones in size and skillset.

The difference is Lance's program was a big fish in a small pond and Jones' program was a small fish in a big pond.

The book is still out on Jones. I see Lance as having a similar start.
No

I'd imagine the cost to move up to 6 from 19 would be astronomical.

I'd be willing to see how that went.
But the big difference would be that WFT would have to give up...
Britt in VA : 9:35 am : link
a boatload of draft capital to go get Lance, while we did not for Jones.
Britt: If you REALLY think about it...
... Jones is probably not a good comp for Trey Lance.

Jones came into the League with three solid seasons of experience. Lance played one year, back in 2019. Competition level aside (like struggling against Illinois State in his last game), the biggest question about Lance is his thin resume.

I realize Jones plays faster than his 4.8 from the combine, but he's not a 4.55 guy like Lance. And by most accounts, Lance has a stronger arm, even at this early stage. I doubt you will see many draftniks mentioning Jones as a comp for Lance.
Well, I distinctly said size and skillset.
Britt in VA : 10:04 am : link
They are both a good height at 6'4, 220'ish lbs, both throw a nice deep ball and can make plays with their legs.

From purely a "what do they show up with" standpoint, they seem to have a similar skillset to me.
And Jones was the fastest straight line QB in the NFL last year...
Britt in VA : 10:05 am : link
faster than Lamar Jackson at top speed. So I do think he plays MUCH faster than his 4.8 at the combine.
