Waddle likely to go in the top 8

Detroit most probable.

The low point for Waddle could be the Giants at pick No. 11, but multiple team sources believe Waddle won't get that far and will be off the board.

Although I really wanted Smith or Waddle, I would have settled for Parsons. But I think that even if both Waddle and Parsons are available the Giants will stay put and reach for ER... probably Payne.

The only scenario I see for the Giants taking an Alabama WR is if Parsons or the 5th QB sneaks into the top 10 and two of the three teams that could choose a WR (Miami, Cincy and Det.) choose Chase, Waddle and Sewell...it could mean that Smith drops to 11.

And if that happens, while I'm doing my "We got Smith" victory dance right after pick 10, a Giants rep will run the card up to the comish, so that he can announce that the Giants have selected Payne :(

Gettleman has reached before so reaching for EDGE at 11 would not be surprising.

And, it's compounded by us not having a 5th or 7th. I'd rather be short picks and take the difference-making WR, but if he's wed to an edge, it's the best year ever to trade down, accumulate picks, and still pick up the same edge (regardless of which edge he actually picks).

Forgot to say... they weren't "reaches' in Gettleman's mind. Oh, no. He never reaches. That is, until after the fact when we find out that his pick WAS a reach.
Good. Waddle is a guy I don’t want any part of at 11.

Waddle was a better receiver at Alabama than Smith. So I wouldn't be surprised if he's ultimately more productive in the NFL. But even if a doctor says Waddle is 100% healthy based on a physical in an exam room, I would still want to see Waddle on the field running and doing drills before I would make that bet.

Leg injuries with receivers are very tricky.

No guarantee that Slater will be out Lemiuex/Hernandez this year, given the one year experience. And, even so, we saw what happened with Thomas last year (picked higher). No reason to think that Slater won't also need a half a season to a season to overcome growing pains.

+1. We need to keep in mind Shepard and Slayton have two years left on their deals. If Shepard misses 4+ games again this year he will likely be cut prior to next season. We need one more legit WR.

week 1 of 2021. I bring this up on every thread but Shepard being cut next year opens up a good amount of cap savings and we need his position backfilled. We can do that 2 ways - have a great #2 alongside Golladay allowing us to cheaply add a FA slot WR/hope a mid round pick this year can do that job or cut him next year and spend again at WR to fill the critical role + the #2 WR position. Slayton factors into this, not sure how at the moment.

WR is a need.

Because one plays LT (top 3 hardest positions to play in the NFL) and the other doesn't.
I don’t think Waddle
ryanmkeane : 4/20/2021 9:41 am : link
is going in the top 8. Unless he goes to Cincy or Miami, I don’t think Detroit is taking him as their first pick of the new regime with the injury and them pretty much bottoming out and rebuilding, and then you have Carolina at 8 who has Moore and Anderson, and just let Samuel go who is a lesser version of Waddle...

I don’t see it
Maybe; I'm skeptical
Bill L : 4/20/2021 9:41 am : link
and even if you plug him and play him, I think it's only an incremental improvement and I want more form that spot.
Brad Holmes/Dan Campbell
ryanmkeane : 4/20/2021 9:43 am : link
after all the talk about getting the trenches fixed and being a smash mouth team, it would be really weird for them to take Waddle (or Smith) at 7. They have that inside out mentality and this is their very first pick
List of teams that
Dnew15 : 4/20/2021 9:43 am : link
have just as bad if not worse group of pass catchers post FA than the Giants:
1.) Colts
2.) Ravens
3.) Patriots
4.) Eagles
5.) Bengals
6.) Jags
7.) Dolphins
8.) Lions
9.) Jets

The Giants do not have the worst set of WR in the league. I can see an argument - maybe...
But it's certainly no fact.
The Patriots
ryanmkeane : 4/20/2021 9:44 am : link
receivers make the Giants receivers look like the best in the league. I watched a few Pats games, they don’t have a single guy who you can call a decent NFL player at receiver

We have to stop thinking that the blunders of yesterday will continue. Teams all around the league are getting immediate starters and all pros with their high picks, its up to the Giants FO and coaching staff to do the same.

I was afraid of this, every year a speed guy goes higher than expected, that's not new. But Waddle's lateral agility combined with elite speed...

GPS confirmed that he was the fastest player in college football in terms of average speed and top speed and the second wasn't close

He beats double coverage, he uses rocker steps without losing speed (very Odell like), twitched up/type IIb, elite stop and start, drops defenders at the top of the route. Straight outran the speedster Tyson Campbell.

Best return man since Tyreek Hill. My pick for the Giants if at 11. What'd Mara say? Giants need more playmakers? IMO Waddle is the best in the class.

Every year there is Tyreek Hill comparison, as a freshman in the SEC championship, he outplayed both the previous 'Tyreek Hill' comparisons. Ruggs and Hardman. This is the guy my friends

Can you point me to any video - running, workouts, etc - of Waddle looking completely healthy since the high ankle sprain and fracture against Tennessee?

Rhetorical questions are fun, I’ll answer it anyways. No.

Here’s my rhetorical for you. Can you tell me why Ramczyk was taken at 32 overall despite being the top graded tackle, confirmed publicly by at least 3 teams, at a premium position, from a school with a great OL history?

I’ll give you a hint, it had nothing to do with his arm length.
Wide Receivers making the grade at #11 should be
NYGgolfer : 4/20/2021 9:50 am : link
giving more somewhat consideration than a Guard and/or Edge. Slater looks to have plenty of skills but a little on light side and the year off adds to hesitancy to grab that position so early. The Edge guys work in back half of Round One but not at #11.

Point made above that Shepard is a roster casualty after this year and who knows which way Slayton goes with his development. And Golladay has an uphill battle to earn his contract.

Giants grabbing an impactful WR at #11 that can be a stable (cheaper) force in that unit for years makes a lot of sense.

I'm a huge Waddle guy and I hope the Giants nab him. I'm also high on SLayton too though and think a trio of KG, Waddle and Slayton with Barkley is formidable.

But I still think you have to consider Slater. I think the difference in thinking is the incremental improvement from status quo to Slater. What I don't know is how the Giants feel about Hernandez/Lemiuex/Fulton/Peart. If they think drafting Slater is a huge upgrade to Hernandez and also provides a valuable hedge to Peart regressing, I'd be in favor of the move.

Peart is definitely not a slam dunk, he's a question mark. But he's a third round pick who showed some promise last year, you don't *have* to let him play there and see if he can sure up that spot, but considering the investments made at OT, it seems like they will go that way

Let's face it - getting competent, quality OLs are almost as critical as finding skill players. I'm at the point where I consider EVERY OL position a skill position and if you can grab a good one early do it.

And it's a smart bet because the hit rate for OLs in RD1 is very high - 60%.

right doesn't mean we need to take one at 11. Take the best player. If Giants think Waddle and Smith are pro bowl receivers but Slater and VT are good guards, you take the pro bowler.

If they think Paye is an elite run defender and can put him all over the line and has really good pass rush upside, especially from the interior at first, then you take Paye over the guard.

Agreed. And the jury is still out on Ruggs. He was nicked up his entire rookie season but flashed big play ability on multiple occasions.

Regardless, Waddle is a more complete player that is an excellent route runner and makes contested catches. Ruggs is more of a speedster than a complete receiver.
