Question about Giants rushing attack last season

M.S. : 4/20/2021 9:05 am

In 2020, the Giants averaged 4.43 yards per carry, which was down from 2019, 4.65 yards. But my overall impression of Giants run game last season is that there were far fewer plays (than in 2019) in which the running back got stoned at the line of scrimmage or backfield.

Anyone have any stats that back up that impression?
because they actually had a fucking Center who didn't get blown

Gallman in 2020 averaged 2.2 yards before contact/attempt compared to Barkley averaging 2.0 YBC/att in 2019.

Gallman

Barkley

So you’re saying Gates can’t plat the position?
Sorry Victor

I misunderstood.
Wayne Gallman was arm tackled

at the second level of the defense more than any other RB I've ever seen.

There were at least a dozen runs that SB would have taken to the house.
wonder what team rankings were

on 3rd and short?
The OL were creating holes.....that Barkley will blow up,

Hopefully!

And if the defense over commit to the run....Daniel should exploit.

It was maddening to watch. I like Gallman's work ethic and drive and I wish him well wherever he goes, but man, what could have been on so many runs last year. Those "hard yards" didn't do much for us.
I was unaware

of any Giants "rushing attack" last year.
My recollection is that the first few weeks the rushing attack
Dinger : 4/20/2021 10:27 am : link
was horrendous. Barkley, for the two games he played, was being met in the backfield too often. Once he got injured, it seemed to steadily improve. A combination of the line gelling, simplification of plays(?) and maybe the RB's not 'dancing' as much in the backfield looking to turn a loss into a homerun instead of just taking no gain. I still think the line is the most glaring weakness on the team and that with improvement there, not just the run game will get better but DJ SHOULD be vastly improved with the addition of Galloday and Rudolph.
Sad state of affairs

that we have young 1st round TE but it takes addition of a dinged-up 31-y.o. TE to improve things for DJ.
Saquon was ripping long runs

Even leaving aside Engram's issues, not all TEs are built the same. Engram was never drafted to be an in-line blocking TE. Just because he's also been disappointing in his intended role of a receiver doesn't mean that we should expect him to be something as a blocker that he was never drafted to be.

The Giants have carried a blocking TE specialist every year. If you're going to call them out about Rudolph, it's Toilolo that is problematic more than Engram. But Rudolph is a two-way TE, which we haven't really had since Martellus Bennett.
Giants changed run blocking schemes last year if I remember correctly
kdog77 : 4/20/2021 4:56 pm : link
I think they used more zone run blocking schemes for Barkley and power run blocking schemes for Gallman. In the former, the OL have to block the first defender in the zone and the RB has to pick the open gap and quickly accelerate in one cut upfield. In the latter the OL have specific blocking assignments and the RB has to hit the designated hole before it closes. It does not help that the OL had bunch of rookies or retreads on it but they seemed to gel more when they went to the power run blocking scheme. Who can say if it was bad coaching or lack talent that lead to reduced production overall. Maybe both?
Thanks for all the comments
