Kellerman and Smith Discussing Giants Draft Needs

Eric from BBI : Admin : 4/20/2021 11:26 am
was just about the most painful thing I've ever seen on sports TV in my life.

Every time I peek at ESPN, it somehow manages to get worse. I'm not sure how that is possible.
HOW CAN ONE NOT LOVE

(Said in jest.)
We had ESPN on in our lunch room yesterday

and I had to turn it off...it was painful.
Honestly,
Giant John : 4/20/2021 11:38 am : link
They are both attention seeking people. No time for either of them.
I tuned in for 5 seconds and saw/heard something like
90.Cal : 4/20/2021 11:40 am : link
"Should the Giants move off of Daniel Jones and trade up for a QB?"

I immediately turned that bullshit off.

Kellerman is a Giants fan no? I don't really watch ESPN a ton unless a game is on. I like PTI, but haven't seen it in awhile. I can't even remember the last time I watched Sportscenter, which was appointment viewing for me in the '90s.
i have not watched ESPN in years

Don't watch ANY ESPN, except
ZogZerg : 4/20/2021 11:47 am : link
for actual Football games.

Well, and I guess I'll watch some ESPN for the NFL draft.
That will be my fill until the football season starts.

It’s been over a decade for me. The only time I turn on ESPN is if there is a game on. I haven’t seen anything else on that network. It’s sad what it has become because ESPN used to be great.

It’s brutal. It’s the sports equivalent of the MTV network destruction when they stopped playing music videos and converted to 100% reality TV.

This is where reasonable takes become unreasonable.

If you have avoided ESPN for years, you're not actually a sports fan. They still do own the rights to a ton of first-tier programming.

I didn't see the segment, but I actually really like Kellerman. I loved his show back in the day, I liked his takes, he's a super bright guy, I have an analytical mind like him so it clicked for me.

He's a huge Giants fan - and I don't think he likes the direction of the team since the last Super Bowl (who does?)...so he's probably down on all of their moves these days.

I'm not arguing that their programming hasn't gone down the tubes - I don't watch their crap much myself. I just don't puff my chest out that I stopped watching that network years ago and then try to issue a caveat that I didn't mean the games that are on their network and fund all the rest of the stuff that I purport to despise.

I think PTI is funny, I think SportsCenter is useful, I scan their channels on my guide for anything interesting, and I generally treat them like any other channel on my lineup.

I'm not sure why it became this badge of honor that sports fans are disavowing ESPN. They have gone downhill, but no one has really replaced them yet.

Ok, I give you PTI...I used to love it and frankly didn't even know it was still on. And I'm not speaking for everyone here, but we aren't disavowing ESPN on the whole...we're talking about the complete crap they sell as analysis now. Of course we watch games. I still watch MLB, women's college ball, and NFL games...it's their flagship programming we believe is unwatchable. I long for the days of Olbermann and Patrick on Sportscenter.

Trainmaster : 4/20/2021 12:14 pm : link
is how the NFL Network has morphed into ESPN 2.0.

I used to really enjoy the NFL Network with Rich Eisen and Co.

Now (speaking like an old "get off my lawn" guy), they have younger hosts that don't seem to have much of a resume IMHO just spouting off on things they appear to know very little about.

NFL Radio on Sirius/XM is one of the few places to get "real" NFL information and informed opinions.

I'm fairly certain a lot of the management team over at ESPN pretty much switched jobs to NFL Network a bunch of years back. It's basically been ESPN exclusively for football for years now.

NFL Radio on Sirius/XM is one of the few places to get "real" NFL information and informed opinions.

This is very true. The NFL network, like ESPN before it, forgot why they became so popular. The NFL network was such a refreshing change when it first aired. They were just highlights, analysis, and inside information lead by Adam Schefter. Both networks lost their way when they hired journalists that resort to trolling to attract viewers.

Stephen A. Smith, Kellerman, Skip Bayless, etc. think that they are the stars that people tune in for more than the real athletes. They’re opinion is superior to all others even when it is obvious that they aren’t well informed. For example Stephen A. Smith is very good when discussing the NBA but when it comes to the NFL he knows less than many diehard fans. Yet the arrogance he displays when someone disagrees with him is second to none.

A couple of years ago I remember Stephen A. Smith discussing key matchups in a game between the Chargers and Raiders. Smith had to choose one matchup that will be the key to victory. Smith said that Hunter Henry vs Derrick Johnson would be a huge matchup. He said that Hunter Henry was having a huge season and that Derrick Johnson would have his hands full. The only problem was that Derrick Johnson was released by the Raiders weeks earlier and Hunter Henry did not play a snap yet that season because he was injured.

I watch Smith and Kellerman at times. I turn it off when they talk about things that do not interest me. Smith ridicules everyone, he is definitively not a Giants basher. He saves his bashing for the Cowboys and it is that Schtick that I often enjoy. He gets ex Cowboys and Cowboy fans on and fucking mocks the shit out of Jerry Jones and the Cowboys that do nothing but break the hearts of Cowboys fans. Don't know about you, but I do enjoy me some Cowboy mocking.

Is this board so dense you have to say "said in jest"?
I don't watch ESPN (other than actual sporting events)
Bill L : 4/20/2021 12:52 pm : link
But I do listen to a lot of ESPN radio. It's tough sometimes because they drift from sports a lot, depending on the show. The station itself is very "social justice" on almost every topic. Some shows, more than others. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that if that's what you want to listen to, but I'm more interested in just what's going in specific to the sport. For example, I simply can't listen to Sarah Spain. She has her audience and that's cool; it's just not me. Chinay and Mike are that way too but at least they'll talk about actual sports every so often.

I do kind of laugh at how hard they do the repeat it often enough and it becomes reality about certain things. Like the WNBA for example. They are working overtime to put it on par with the NBA. They did the same thing with the NCAA Tournament and the Women's NCAA Tournament. Nothing against either sport, but it's a market-driven thing and *should* be a market-driven thing, IMO.

They're currently on the pump Justin Fields up to the best QB in the draft kick. Or at least top 3. It's kind of surreal...without SF saying a word, they first impose Mac Jones on them, and then the station gets all pissy about them picking Mac Jones, and turn it into a Justin Fields radiothon. Totally manufactured outrage.

Of course, that's after they moved on from talking about how Russell Wilson is the most abused athlete ever and Seattle simply *must* do something to set him free. And that was after making Deshaun Watson the most abused athlete ever and HOuston simply *must* do something to set him free. Of course, there put themselves into a social justice bind there, so Deshaun's name doesn't come up very much anymore outside of Sportcenter.

This is where reasonable takes become unreasonable.

If you have avoided ESPN for years, you're not actually a sports fan. They still do own the rights to a ton of first-tier programming.

watching the games on ESPN is different than watching programming.

If you haven't watched ESPN in years, you haven't watched ESPN in years.

Don't pat yourself on the back for a partial truth.
well since we were discussing the commentators, I felt the context was self explainitory. But, since you require specifics, I haven't tuned into the ESPN channel for anything other than a game in years. Since I still catch clips from their content in other sources. Usually find it laughably horrible.

Like what? We're talking anything to do with Sports Center, NFL shows, Betting shows, Fantasy shows...they're all bullshit for casual fans, not diehards like it used to be. Not 30 for 30. Seriously...name ONE hosted show that is watchable and in which you'll actually learn something.

All I'm saying is, you can't say "I haven't watched ESPN in years" if you just watched a game on ESPN last week.

Got it. And all I'm saying, is I'm pretty sure we mean their original content, not sporting events. Fine line, agreed, but that's what I meant by not watching ESPN,

When you watch the games they broadcast, the advertising dollars fund the original content you despise.

You may not be "watching ESPN" but you're funding it.
why should I care if I am funding programing I won't watch with the ad funds? Really, if they want to produce garbage content, I say have at it.

I still watch shows on ESPN, I watch the morning shows like Get Up, Jay Will and Zubin and sometimes First Take. I watch PTI and College Game day Sat in the fall.

Am I glued to these shows from start to finish, no. Has the ESPN gone down. Most certainly. But they liked the NFL network are try to turn sports shows into sports entertainment. They sell their souls if they could get a few additional viewers per day who are not hardcore sports fans. You are all correct that folks have been fed up. You can see it in their ratings decline and that Disney has taken a hatchet to their budget and staff.

I saw the Smith/Dan Orloffsky and Kellerman debate this morning on First Take: Should the Giants consider taking a QB at 11. I thought it was interesting. Kellerman stuck his neck out with a premise and Smith and Dan O cut him down. I could have done without the yelling.

How was that different from being on BBI?
ESPN is brutal

the only good thing they have going is they improved the MNF crew from awful to decent, and their NBA Countdown is actually solid

ESPN has the same problem as the other 24 hour news channels...
Jan in DC : 4/20/2021 1:24 pm : link
They generate a slate of topics, get two chuckleheads to take opposing viewpoints and yell at each other.

The only show that has done it convincingly has been PTI because Kornheiser and Wilbon are smart and there is an air of silliness to their show. And their friendship shines through any of their antics.

The rest of the original programming that is all these chummy sportsheads trying to create a locker room atmosphere on television is boring. I extend this analysis to the halftime shows on all the Sunday broadcasts.
I just watched it.

jeez ... that was not just espn bad, that was absolutely embarrassing ...
It started with Rome
Scooter185 : 4/21/2021 8:27 am : link
He used to be the Hot Take King, hell the show was called 'Jim Rome is Burning'. I don't think it was a particularly good show and it was really the only one of it's kind, but then Twitter happened and hot takes became an artform. Jim Rome was ahead of his time.

That's also why FS1 got the two biggest airbags imaginable in Bayless and Cowherd. Wish they'd take Dibble too and get him off Hartford's airwaves
"Should the Giants move off of Daniel Jones and trade up for a QB?"
arniefez : 4/21/2021 9:11 am : link
might be a fair question 12 months from now. Hopefully not.

But anyone who has even an elementary understanding of the on field side and the business side of the NFL should know that now is 100% not the time to do that.
It's fun to watch sometimes
