Giants’ draft: desired takeaways

Angel Eyes : 4/20/2021 5:18 pm
So, after the draft is done, what pieces should the Giants be able to acquire that would be assets?

For me, I’d prefer the Giants to have:
An edge rusher who can pressure/sack the quarterback if Leonard Williams can’t get there, an offensive guard who can hold up in pass protection, a wide receiver or two who are sure handed targets, a two-way tight end (who can block and catch) who can be mentored by Rudolph, and a running back who can complement Barkley and alleviate some of the workload.

Maybe: a cornerback who can start and not look like an idiot should Adoree Jackson or James Bradberry go down.

Definite luxury items: another middle linebacker beside Martinez, a defensive tackle; not sure if we need a nose or a 3-tech. I’m not much of a hog mollie guy when it comes to defense. Safeties since we have a few.

Thoughts?
So you are figuring on 6 or 7 draft picks, not including your luxury

That’s what we have right now, barring any trades.
more speed bc speed = more turnovers, more big plays
Eric on Li : 4/20/2021 5:32 pm : link
so that's what I'm looking for.

Whether it's a sideline to sideline LB in the mold of Devin White (Parsons? Davis?).

Or an edge rusher who can generate some sack strips (like they tried to get in Floyd).

Or one of the top wideouts.

Or another highly athletic offensive lineman who can help slow down the other team's pass rushers, limit turnovers against, and open holes for Barkley.

I'd love to see a draft where the top 2 picks come away with 1 big play SEC receiver and 1 front 7 player with some real explosiveness.
3-level takeaways
Jimmy Googs : 4/20/2021 5:36 pm : link
1 - draft an impact playmaking WR for the Offense

2 - find two players for the OL, a starting Guard and a developing other OL at any position (C, G or OT)

3 - add some developing/depth to RB, ILB & TE units

jimmy,

interesting no ER on your list...i bet in rd 1 or 2 and amen IMHO....close out halfs and games
Most picks after the 2nd round
Chip : 4/20/2021 5:52 pm : link
are at best rotational players and play special teams. Occasionally you hit on a David Diehl in the 5th round or a Brandon Jacobs in the 4th, Ahmad Bradshaw in the 7th. look at Jerry Reeses picks in the 3rd round he miss on all of them as well as the 4th 5th and 6th rounders. Don't over value draft picks especially late ones. People who argue over 6th and 7th rounders are just being stupid.
Yep, something has to give and for me its Edge
Jimmy Googs : 4/20/2021 5:54 pm : link
because I see better talent at WR at #11 than Edge. Day 2 Edge guys aren't likely to give you what you want either.

If Giants negotiate slight trade-down then maybe they can grab an Edge in Rd 1 and add a solid (not star) WR with the extra pick they get. Maybe...

Completely agree. Rd 1 should be a top 5 WR (Smith, Waddle ) and Rd 2 should be a top 10 OL. In a draft strong at WR and OL it has to be this way.
Mine in order
WillVAB : 4/20/2021 7:01 pm : link
Edge (at least 1, 2 would be great)
Quality OG capable of playing OT
WR, preferably an electric slot type to compliment what’s on the roster
RE: Desired Takeaways; I'll Play
Trainmaster : 4/20/2021 7:12 pm : link
First rounder: Trade back a few slots and still get on of the key talents (Parsons, Surtain, D Smith, Waddle, Slater; assuming Pitts, Sewell and Chase are long gone).

Second rounder (First one): Get WR, OL or Edge that wasn't taken in the first round.

Second rounder (via Trade): Get WR, OL or Edge that wasn't taken in the first or second round above:

Third, fourth, sixth & sixth: Smart, talented, hard working football players regardless of position.

The Giants KNOW ....
Manny in CA : 4/20/2021 10:19 pm : link

They need somebody who can get to the opposing QB (that's why Trent Brown & Odeenigbo are here); Carter & Ximines haven't proven they can do it.

Kwity Paye is not a top tier edge, but I think he's capable of
consistent Shaq Barrett/Brandon Graham type play - 8/9 sacks, with constant pressure/hits on the QB
This is Gettleman
GMen72 : 4/21/2021 12:41 am : link
If the Giants end up with 2 starters, count the draft a success. Stop acting like we're going to come out of this draft with a plethora of studs...this is Dave Gettleman we're talking about. We'll probably trade up for Pitts and draft a DB or two who won't pan out.
Edge but more into BPA - too many needs
giantstock : 4/21/2021 1:09 am : link
It all depends on availability but I think most import position is Edge.

2 through 9 not in order but BPA between G, WR, OT, RB, TE, CB, OLB and ILB. Thus every position is cited on offense other than QB. But per below a backup is needed.
Then behind this DT and backup QB. And because of BPA these can jump the others.

The problem imo is that there is no “super” Edge. And I’m not so high on Guards/Centers after early to at best mid portion of round 2. And nearly every other position needs an upgrade. You can “what if” nearly any scenario with “what if” we lose our best player at a certain position to convince yourself that we need “that” added-depth at “that” position.

I’m of the opinion that you need to know asap about Jones and Barkley as a result I’m higher on offense especially the OL but specifically EVERY POSITION on OFFENSE. And a super WR or super TE over the OL? – sure. You can get an Edge in rd 2 or if you get enough super talent in rounds 1 and 2 on offense a rd 3 Edge guy could be serviceable.

You know we spent all this money on Williams and had a mid-1st round pick in Lawrence – and does this mean they are nothing more than glorified run stoppers? And now we’re possibly going to take Paye another mostly run stopper (at least this early)? If the 2 are mostly run stoppers then what are we doing by using so much money on them in a passing league? And just add Paye – the same general type- isn’t he?

The point is- the Giants still should be able to “survive” if they go rounds 1 and 2 on offense even if they go away from biggest need in these rounds. If need be - trade up and get an Edge in rd 2 as well etc.
Smith, Parsons, Slater, Horn, maybe Waddle and Phillips
joeinpa : 4/21/2021 6:57 am : link
Would all be picks that I would feel were justified.

I just want the Giants to come out of this draft with a top five player. Stripping away the quarterbacks, I think all of the above come close to that criteria

Did not include Pitts or Sewell as I don’t think they will be there at 11
I want Smith, no question about it.
Bill L : 4/21/2021 7:45 am : link
I want to walk away from the draft with Smith *and* Josh Palmer, one of the NC backs (Williams/Carter) and a Kendrick Green-type of OG. Then, after that, I would be looking for a TE like Tremble or someone. My last two 6th rounders would be Edge flyers.
^^^^^
Bill L : 4/21/2021 7:47 am : link
That's my let's see who Daniel Jones really is and pump up the defense next year draft.

I have an truly "all-in" version where we trade the next two 1's to get an extra top 10-15 pick for your choice of OG/OT or edge
After Day 2
giants#1 : 4/21/2021 7:58 am : link
I hope they have a WR, ER, and OG. The order depends on how the draft falls and who's available when they pick. Would also love to see them trade back in the first to the 15-20 range and add some extra picks.

Huh?
Basically getting an extra top tier #1 in this draft
Bill L : 4/21/2021 9:23 am : link
at the expense of the number ones in the next two drafts. So, all in for Jones in this draft. I would walk away with Smith and Slayter/VT in this draft.

I don't even know what to make of that.
