Any particular reason that Abrams & Pettit are more visible?

Sean : 4/20/2021 7:41 pm
During the 2018 & 2019 seasons, Gettleman handled the post free agency & pre draft pressers by himself. Beginning in 2020, I’ve noticed that both Abrams & Pettit are now more involved in media functions.

It has continued today with Abrams, and on Thursday with Pettit joining Gettleman for the pre draft presser.

Is this just nothing, or do you think there is a reason behind this?
I thought Gettleman would retire after last year

but when the Giants finished 5-3, that bought him more time.

I suspect he's going to retire after this season & the Giants are going to transition more visibility to Abrams as GM and Pettit as likely the head of player development. Abrams' involvement has been telegraphed for a long time, similar to Ernie working with George Young for years before George retired. Pettit however has risen up from the rest of the scouts and seems to have a lot more pull in the organization.
Win or lose, Gettleman is 70

retirement isn't far off

What do you make of the Kyle O’Brien hire though? This is a guy whose been thought highly of and interviewed for the Lions GM job a few months back.

Gettleman is long in the tooth so Giants are making possible successors more visible so BBIers aren't like, 'Who the F is this dude?' when one of them is named GM. And the next GM-hell, he might already be-is JJ anyways so it's more of a figurehead, especially if it's Abrams who is a cap guy.
I can't help but think...

Free agents or the draft he can throw them under the bus
I think in the Giants eyes

They'd love to start winning to justify either one as a new GM candidate if/when Gettleman steps down. I wouldn't be opposed to co-GM positions with Petit as the talent evaluator and Abrams as the cap guru. They can change their titles and still have Judge as the decision maker.
It’s quite possible that

DG is in the final year or two of his tenure and most certainly could be the last, if this is another lousy year. Pettit, Abrams and O’Brien can carry on if he departs.

I also was totally convinced Gettleman would “retire” after this past season. It also seems clear Abrams is being brought along, most likely to be named GM once DG is out.

I love the idea of Judge and Abrams kind of sharing the GM responsibilities in the future though. Let Judge build his roster. Let Abrams crunch the numbers. Pettit as head of player development seems right on as well.
What you are seeing is stability in action

Abrams and Pike are and will be running this team the next 10 years if they are successful.
This could be me just spit balling and being optimistic

but I believe the Giants are transitioning the way in which they run their organization. Much like Judge is the CEO of the coaching staff overseeing everything, It very well could be Gettleman acting as a defacto CEO of the personnel department with Abrams as cap guru, Pettit as College Scout guru and Kyle O' Brien with a newly created position as Senior Personnel Executive, who also has ties to Judge from the NE days.

One of these three will eventually be the GM..

I also believe O'Brien was brought in to reduce Chris Mara's role to a degree.
From what I can remember,

they both have been pretty visible since like 19, so I dont think its that big of a deal...although youd have to be blind to not think Abrams is definitely a shoe in for a bigger role in the future. He definitely needs some practice in front of the media, so the Giants are probably doing what any good business would do - develop their talent both on and off the field.
Abrams

Has been the Assistant GM since before Accorsi retired. If he was going to be the Giants GM, he would be so by now. He is a money guy not a personnel guy, which is what they obviously want in the GM role. If Gettleman retires, Abrams will become the Assistant GM to his 4th GM.

I kind of agree with you here, bw. I don't think its necessarily disorganized or unprofessional though. Its disconnected to the 'modern' game or times and bravado or bragadociousnes or pomposity that he gives off. I've mostly supported DG's moves and understood the reasoning behend them at the time. The thing I haven't liked about him from the get go is his media presence. From Hog Mollies to computer guys to being a classy organization(If youre classy you don't say your classy), he makes me cringe in almost every interview or PC. Abrams seems more polished or at least subtle in these meetings.
Giants have been grooming both to move up

Abrams more visible for a year or so now. Not sure Petit has been.

Obvious candidate sooner vs later. But he will need to rub his eyes and blink more if he really wants to be a seamless transition.

Don't know specifically

perhaps it's a signal Abrams won't move into the football ops lead seat, but not sure.
I think Abrams stares into a mirror before any press conference
