I just got an email from Roku. They are in a dispute with Google over pricing for the YouTubeTV package and their contract has expired.
Apparently Roku is continuing the service while they work the dispute, but you can't download the app and they can't accept new subscribers. Google can always pull the plug, so who knows... Can't we all just get along?
Google's size has made it immune to customer service. They don't care... they don't have to care.

Not sure I agree with there. We're paying about $11 per month on TV now and haven't missed satellite/cable in over five years.
Roku is 'allowing' access if you currently have the app and an active account. The email I got from Roku said that they'll continue to provide service as "Google does not take actions to remove it..."

not much of a cost savings and frequent battles between the platforms and service providers.

I'm paying $75 for YTTV with Showtime and another $7 for Discovery+ Not quite my DirecTV bill, but not a huge bargain. And... the price keeps rising.
I don't disagree with you there. However, my Wife and a couple of kids would disagree...
Roku is pretty powerful in their yard as well. They demand a cut of revenue from stations/streamers to be available on their devices.
I was paying 150 for DirecTV, and I pay $70 for YouTubeTV.
It's the best 70 bucks I spend a month.
What Homer said.... we have a HD digital antennae (one-time cost). Get a ton of stations through it but to be honest, we don't even use that all that much (we did for the Draft last night).
We have Roku ($6) and Hulu ($5). I forgot to add AmazonPrime which I think we spend $100 annually on. That's it.
The Roku channels have a ton of content (check out Pluto as one example). I also find myself just watching YouTube content more and more (not YouTube TV). The independent creators on YouTube are just superior (I referenced the Time Ghost Army recently for history content alone).

let Google get too big and powerful. They call the shots now.

When Roku and HBOmax were battling, I saw reports that Roku commands about 40% of the gateway to streaming services so they have some real power in whether your streaming service can be viable.
Roku has all the power for me. I didn't get HBO Max until they got the deal done. I won't sign up to a service without a Roku app...
I will have to check it out

I completely agree. I love YTTV
They are completely integrated into our security apparatus. Hard to limit them.
all of the prices have gone higher... when I started YTTV was $39/mo and now it is $65/mo... but Fubo is about that price as is Hulu... and ATT Now is like $80/mo.
YTTV has best interface and the unlimited DVR is a must have.
we get to watch our local TV (though funny enough, we only watch sports & news live) plus all the regular channels that one watches every now and again (BBCA, TNT, ESPN, etc)
will be interesting to see as these services continue to go ala carte and/or get too expensive how far people are willing to go with it.
If you're willing to part ways with ESPN, the one Sling package for $30 is probably the best deal, which is what I use on Roku.
Then for the kids I got in early on a 3-year deal on Disney+ ($3.33 a month) and a 1 year deal on Paramount+ ($2.50 a month) which has all the Nickelodeon channels and shows on demand. There are a lot of tv options out there right now.
My new TV world:
- YTTV as my base: $70
- Netflix HD: $20
- Hulu/Disney/ESPN+: $15
- Philo: $20
- HBO Max: Free (with internet)
- Apple TV Plus: Free (with cell)
I'm awash in great content, with no bloat, for less money.
And as an added bonus I bundled it all up on a Roku TV and shipped it to my old man and gets it too.
Agreed.
