Good read overall, especially at the bottom re Tom Quinn. Provides insight too on how hard these guys work and how stuff comes together ... 5:30 on a Saturday morning ... sheesh. Link - ( New Window )
Yes he got on their radar because of Special Teams, but if he didn’t have tools to develop at RB he never would have received a draftable grade. You look at a number of other 6th and 7th rounders like Brady Breeze or the LSU WR, they were drafted because of Special Teams ability combined with enough raw tools to potentially do more. This isn’t new as we did this with David Tyree, but it is becoming more widespread.
Trading back twice, might also be indicative that the NYG scouts did not have great conviction in general, about this year's draft class. The lack of in-person visits, canceled games in some cases, canceled combine, some players opting out, all may have contributed to relative doubt.
Their strategy may have been; it is safer to invest at least part of our draft resources in 2022, gaining a 1st, 3rd and 4th.
It's a long term view. You can't make these choices if you are desperate. I see it as a positive sign for the long run.

Toney and "Zeez" seems to be #1 and #2 guys from tier 2. Which is not bad if you look at the move knowing you got 2 1st next year .... which now we stand at one 1st, one 2nd, three 3rds, two 4ths, one 5th, 6th and 7th = 11 picks.
interesting read -- particularly about the RB Brightwell and ER Elerson Smith on special teams -- brings a whole dimension to them that is not on full view
also more insight into Judge's criteria in selecting draft picks - - is it just me or has the senior bowl had a real impact on our last three drafts

Reese didn't escape criticism for never trading back, But yeah you're right that it has been much more of a tag line for the Gettleman hate.
