Would you have considered trading up for Devonta Smith?

Sean : 5/2/2021 11:50 am
Obviously, we don’t know what the trade down options are. But, when Waddle goes to Miami, knowing the Giants loved Smith - would you have parted with a 3rd round pick to secure Smith?

Here’s a scenario: Dallas calls you when they are on the clock. They say that Smith is yours if you part with the 3rd rounder and move up a spot. This prevents him from going to Philly. Would you make that move?

It appears the Giants loved Smith. Would you have been more aggressive in real time to get him? Knowing what we know now, I think we all would have taken the trade down. But, would you have faulted the Giants if they were more aggressive to secure Smith?
No...

The Giants are going to be a better football team having more premium picks next year than trading up for anyone this year.

I was against trading up for anyone this year unless there was a shot at Pitts where they didn't have to give up next year's first.
If we didn’t sign Golladay

Assuming I knew I had the Chicago trade available. Otherwise yes. Toney plus Chicago 1st next year is worth more than Devonta Smith, and I love Smith. Given Chicago's quarterback situation a top 10 first is a possibility for next year.
Move on

My answer is no every time. Some of you need to get a life. No reason to waste your time talking and rehashing after the fact. Don't be such a loser. I love the way things went for us in this draft and looking ahead to next year's draft with much anticipation. You should be able to remain detached enough to enjoy what we did and not make your dick go limp thinking of the what ifs of it all. Smith is an Eagle now so maybe if you picture him in that ugly ass uniform you might not want to bone him so bad.

Settle down. I’m happy with how everything went down.

I think the bigger consideration should have been whether to simply draft Fields themselves.

But in the end I think the trade down was best.
I would've considered trading up for Pitts (not Smith or Waddle)...
Milton : 5/2/2021 12:10 pm : link
...had he dropped to #7 overall, but I'm happy with how it turned out. Toney plus picks is a better outcome than Pitts minus picks. At least that's the way it seems right now.

I think how it all played out was actually the best outcome for that 11th pick
Smith minus the 3rd rounder
JohnB : 5/2/2021 12:14 pm : link
Or Toney and the picks?

I’ll take Toney and the picks. Smith will be a difference maker but the Giants did very well
No but would have definitely picked him at 11
Jimmy Googs : 5/2/2021 12:18 pm : link
Fortunate for the Giants that teams wanted Fields in that spot and kudos to front office in negotiating a nice deal.
Agree with JohnB

Toney+Aaron Robinson+ 2022 Chicago’s #1 pick+Chicago 2022 #4 pick

Exceeds

Smith
I would have tried to get to 7 or 8 before the draft

Even started.... knew we'd have a shot at Sewell or Smith there... happy with the way it played out, Bears 1 in '22 is sweet, hopefully Fields sucks year 1 at least and they win mo more than 5 games lol
There is something to be said for waiting (not moving up) and then

Smith with his frame and the fact he's not a burner

Was not worth trading up for.

The Only one I would have traded up for would have been Sewell, who was the projected best O lineman in the draft, and would have filled the BIGGEST need the O line. Smith may turn out to be better, but there were plenty of good WR in the draft. You don’t trade up for a TE unless he was going to put you over the top, and the Giants are a lot closer to the bottom than the top.
No - I preferred an OL
giantstock : 5/2/2021 12:52 pm : link
The only consideration I had to trade up for Smith was fear that the Giants were going to take an Edge with the 11th pick instead.

Obviously, they weren't going to choose an Edge at 11 so I would have felt no reason to move up.

I have preferred getting more picks to fill more holes or get the OL at 11. Those were my 2 top options.

Honestly it’s an impressive feat to keep this up. Your obsession w the QB is unreal.
Philly had the better 3rd round slot,
barens : 5/2/2021 1:36 pm : link
so there was no benefit to Dallas to do that.

I don’t think so Sean

Toney, a first and a Fourth next year! I don’t even think it s close.

Toney might be the better play maker.

Because of exactly what happened. Deep WR draft. I was a Waddle guy. Miniscule difference.

The benefit is the Giants not trading out of 11 and taking a player you coveted if you trade to 12. I still do not give a 3 if I knew I had Chicago deal as a fallback

The NYG would have had to include their 2nd, not their 3rd. Their 3rd would have not only just matched the PHL offer, it was 1 slot worse. They would have had to beat the PHL offer, not match it.

No way I would have inlcuded my 2nd for Smith, Pitts only.

Love the combination of Toney and the extra pick.

Not sure how they got caught off guard with this trade
stoneman : 5/2/2021 4:55 pm : link
It's reported that they were pissed, etc that they got caught off guard and screwed. It was well know that PHL wanted to get back into the top 10 to get a WR. There were several rumors to the such. I was calling it the second Smith got past Car. They had to be the first to call Dall to cover PHL, not the other way around. Seems odd that the first to offer gets the upper hand. Can't work that way.
Yes
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 5/2/2021 5:04 pm : link
You absolutely “consider” it. Smith is a hell of a prospect and that 3rd rounder keeping him on your side of the Eagles vs. Giants matchups over the years has value to it.

Overall, the trade down was a solid fallback option and Toney very well might end up being better since you never know. But I was a huge Smith fan and could totally see the argument why trading up for him would’ve been worth it.

I’m not sure which scenario would’ve been better, I’m happy how it ended up for the Giants because they look to be in great position for 2022 but at the same time I feel pissed that Smith will be an Eagle.

Biteymax22 : 5/2/2021 5:08 pm : link
We were short picks as it was and still needed to add at least depth to some positions. That 3rd round pick was important to us this year.

And BTW, it netted us a really good prospect.

there are a lot of football minds smarter than me who recognized that Smith was very special.

If Smith becomes Marvin Harrison then, yes, trading up would have been the right move.

The reason for the thread..
Sean : 5/2/2021 5:25 pm : link
It was made clear from our insiders that the Giants coveted Smith and were pissed when the Eagles traded up. My point is, they could have been more aggressive to get him if they coveted him that much.

I’m glad they had a fallback in place.
Definitely not, given the result. I do have one regret, though.

Smith is more nfl ready than Toney.
