Giants' starting defense, post-draft

Angel Eyes : 5/2/2021 11:54 am
Barring Carter and Ximines due to their injuries, this is how I see the Giants' defense shaping up on who will likely receive the most snaps, with a 3-3-5 defense:

LDE: Dexter Williams
NT: Danny Shelton
RDE: Leonard Williams

LLB: Cam Brown/Carter Coughlin (based on situational)
MLB: Blake Martinez
RLB: Azeez Ojulari

LCB: James Bradberry
SS/BoS (box safety)/QLB (quasi-linebacker): Jabrill Peppers
FS: Xavier McKinney
SCB: Logan Ryan/Aaron Robinson/Darnay Holmes
RCB: Adoree Jackson

Thoughts?
I expect Carter (assuming he's healthy) and Crowder
csb : 5/2/2021 12:10 pm : link
to play significant roles as well. Nice to see significantly more depth at the LB and DB position.
Linebacker
Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/2/2021 12:12 pm : link
is going to be tough to figure out. Hell, Ryan Anderson could start.
*Dexter Lawrence, I mean; whoops :(

I'm not sure on the status of Carter since the Giants have been mostly quiet on him (and I haven't been high on him in the first place). For Crowder, I see him as rotating with Reggie Ragland in the inside linebacker spot beside Blake Martinez (the same linebacker spot that was occupied by Gary Reasons in the days of the Big Blue Wrecking Crew while Martinez was the MIKE similar to Harry Carson), but since people are telling me the Giants use a 3-3-5 system, they wound up on the bench.

I'm not sure on Ximines either (see OP); despite starting all but one game that he played in last year he only had four tackles and no sacks before injuring his shoulder and he hasn't impressed me (neither has Carter for that matter). The Giants have been mum on his status as well.
Tae Crowder
RAIN : 5/2/2021 12:29 pm : link
Was a steal last year. He made a significant impact when on the field last season. I think he has the advantage going into 21’ ahead of Brown.

Ximines has an uphill climb to make the roster.

Cam Brown and Carter Coughlin aren't going to do jack shit and probably won't be on the final roster.

Why not start McIntosh & Yiadom too. All our third & fourth stringers should get more starts, right?

Crowder has to be a more consistent tackler if he’s going to play ILB. I saw him. Miss a few tackles last year. Very athletic, or so it appears, but needs to work on tackling.

Stupid?

I've made my opinions on Lorenzo Carter and Ximines quite clear; neither has impressed me much and are coming back from significant injuries, particularly Carter. Brown might be a good SAM linebacker according to Sy's analyses and Coughlin got plenty of starts last year.

McIntosh didn't play a down last year (not quite sure how he's still on the team considering he was inactive the entire time) and Yiadom might be a main backup; before the Giants signed Jackson I had the latter penciled in as a starter.

So, how would you say the lineup for the Giants would be?
I’m sure we will see that lineup but I’m not sure we will see it
Ivan15 : 5/2/2021 12:51 pm : link
As the starting lineup much. McKinney, Ryan are chess pieces. Other LBs will also be very useful.

Giants are so versatile that I don’t see anyone driving right down the field on the first possession. Giants will make adjustments on the fly.

Who is backing up Bradberry and Jackson? Gotta be Robinson with Ryan too, right?
Starting base D, not nickel
LeonBright45 : 5/2/2021 12:55 pm : link
Lawrence - Shelton - Williams
Anderson Ojulari

Martinez Ragland

Bradberry Jackson

Peppers McKinney

In theory yes; Ryan, Robinson and Williams would be backing up Bradberry and Jackson, but Ryan played free safety for most of last year until McKinney was recovered, he prefers to play safety, and since a lot of people think nickel is the new base, I adjusted accordingly.

If I had my way, being an unabashed fan of the Giants’ defense of the 2000s and early 2010s with Strahan, Hammer, Osi, Tuck, and JPP, the Giants would be in a 4-3 with Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams as the starting tackles and a rotation at Edge since I’m not sure who’s the best on our roster but that’s apparently viewed as an archaism.
Don’t agree

With Coughlin/Brown as starters

But there are so many moving pieces on this D that it’s hard to list starters. Easier to predict roles

We can project all we want but its football & people need to win jobs

These things always have a way of working themselves out at camp. Some people will get better, others might have injury related issues and some might regress or not take the step forward as expected. But, it always sorts itself out.
its

So many fronts and looks.
All will have a role in it.

I doubt Cam Brown is going anywhere. At worst, he's an important role player and special teams player.

I would sub Ryan for McKinney and Carter for Anderson until we know more about his rehab.

Yiadom was benched for Julian Love in the Week 17 game vs Dallas. Love was available to play outside CB with the emergence of McKinney and the coaches evidently thought he would do a better job than Yiadom.

That doesn't say much for Yiadom's future here. Rodarius Williams is an outside CB all the way and my hope is he steps up for that main backup role and sends Love back to backup safety/slot.

I was not impressed by Darnay Holmes and, judging by the draft picks, neither were the Giants' decisionmakers.
Not sure we will really have a starting defense
Mike in Boston : 5/2/2021 2:27 pm : link
In the sense of 11 guys who will be the main starters. I think we are likely to see multiple "starting packages" depending on the opponent and their personnel package. Certainly I suspect our third corner, whether Robinson or Holmes or Love will play more than our 2nd ILB.

Probably on who would get the most snaps, more likely.

Maybe so, I would not be surprised if both are let go.

Or put on PUP to start the season. Available to return later on if needed.
What I want to see is...
D HOS : 5/2/2021 6:34 pm : link
That it doesn't matter who 'starts'... that they have enough players that can flip roles so that no matter who they line up and where, the offense can't be sure who is doing what.

If you have that, then you don't really have a base defense or starters. You have a depth chart, sure, but you switching things up so much those terms kind of lose their meaning.

Maybe not realistic, but that's what I thought I heard from Judge and Graham last year.
