Do. Giants trade down if Philly Doesn't jump them?

Grizz99 : 5/2/2021 9:37 pm
IOW's do the Giants trade down even if Smith was there?
We know the deal was not spontaneous and the general terms were set.
My second thought: without Smith did the terms change?
Just idle speculation and not terribly important in the scheme of things, but I think they would have made the deal anyway, so in effect Philly was not the Flint that started the fire.
And I also think there's the possibility that Chicago pulled back some bartering chips once Smith was gone.
Most likely no

And it's been discussed
I wonder if we will ever know
pjcas18 : 5/2/2021 9:38 pm : link
the truth, every team always says they got the guy they had always wanted.

if forced to give an opinion I'd say if Smith was there at 11, Giants stay at 11 and take Smith.
If you believe Rico

And I wholeheartedly do, DeVonta Smith was at the top of their board and they were pissed that they were jumped for him.

Absolutely DeVonta would've been the pick.
An Afterthought

No one's mentioned it but this was a very good deal for Chicago too. I believe they had two number one picks next year, so they didn't hurt themselves and this kid has enormous potential. That's really not a high price to pay, provided of course Fields realizes his potential.
I'm guessing not.
Rico : 5/2/2021 9:43 pm : link
We were very excited for Smith and very pissed when we lost him, even after our big trade.

They didn't have two number ones next year. They have no first round picks next year now.

And yes, it was a win-win for both teams. Giants get draft capital; Bears get their franchise QB.
They take Smith.

The deal was contingent upon Fields being there and the Giants missing on Smith/Waddle/Pitts etc.

Bears could not walk back on the deal arranged as Minnesota was apparently looking to move and they wanted Fields.
I would guess that they select Smith.....but I am glad

It worked out the way it did....

I was a "trade down" guy....and if the downs worked like this one.

I would always trade down.

I actually feel Toney will have a better career then Smith.

Smith will likely be a great player, but likely not great enough to be better than the net of Toney, the trade up for Robinson and the 2022 1st and 4th.

20/20 hindsight I'm ecstatic that Philly jumped ahead of the Giants.

THIS. The Vikings made the Bears make that deal. The Giants wouldn't have made the trade if Smith was there based on what's been said by people who know like Rico.
Probably not. They take Smith
Matt M. : 5/3/2021 1:53 am : link
I think most would agree Smith is better. But, is he significantly better to think that they ended up in a better position with Toney plus 2 extra picks next year? I don't think so. They ended up in an ideal situation.

There aren't many in the league who would've turned down that trade.. Even with Smith on the board.
And if the Giants took Smith..
jeffusedtobeonwebtv : 5/3/2021 5:36 am : link
...would the Bears then have made the same offer to the eagles?
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 5/3/2021 6:20 am : link
I think we take Smith.
Don’t think so
Mike in NY : 5/3/2021 6:44 am : link
Smith was clearly BPA after about pick 7, even if there was a group that wanted Alijah Vera Tucker. Unfortunately we will never know how good the Vikings deal was as that would have still kept us in range for AVT if it is to be believed that the trade up was for Fields and not Slater because if it was for the latter then maybe AVT doesn’t fall to 14.
Probably not
Mike in Boston : 5/3/2021 6:56 am : link
But if they would have gotten at least the same terms from Chicago, the should have.
No.
Big Blue '56 : 5/3/2021 7:05 am : link
That said, might the Bears have sweetened the pot even MORE, had they assumed Smith was our guy and they really needed to get to 11? Just askin’
I think so.
giantBCP : 5/3/2021 7:10 am : link
I don’t think that they would have turned the Bears offer down, even if Smith was on the board.
And one thing is for certain.
giantBCP : 5/3/2021 7:19 am : link
Heads would have exploded if the Eagles made a similar trade with Chicago from the 12 spot, even if we drafted Smith. The insufferable shits on this board would have had a field day.
Draft capital for next year
PA Aggie : 5/3/2021 7:55 am : link
I think the interest in Smith was mostly the media and/or a little smokescreen by the Giants. I think they were always very serious about a trade down and acquire picks as currency for moving up in the draft next year should DJ not work out.

Just my opinion, we may never know. I hope Smith gets under-utilized in Philly and we kick their ass for years to come.

I hope they get called for delay of game while they play Rock Paper Scissors to determine who the first read will be.
No I don’t think they do that
Giant John : 5/3/2021 8:07 am : link
Their target was Smith. I hope the Giants bury both Dallas and the Eagle this year but that’s no different than any year.

I mean, the Eagles would have four 1st round picks next year, right? They really gained a shitload by throwing that last game of the season.
No ....
Beer Man : 5/3/2021 8:36 am : link
I believe they wanted Smith, had Philly not jumped them, he would be a Giant. Long term, with the future draft collateral the Giants picked up, it may be the best thing that could have happened to the team.
No, so I am so glad the Eagles traded up for Smith
PatersonPlank : 5/3/2021 8:58 am : link
I much prefer the way it went down.

Ditto. I hope we use the Bears pick to get a player who haunts the Philthy Green Birds for a decade.
No chance
UGADawgs7 : 5/3/2021 9:59 am : link
It seemed very clear NYG wanted Smith. Also It’s clear they weren’t very high on Slater. Next years CHI 1 could end up being top 10 or better. The best thing to happen for NYG was Philly trading up. Payback is a bitch, and Philly just gave NYG a very good chance at building pieces towards a dynasty now and next draft.
