2022 Roster musings

DavidinBMNY : 5/3/2021 3:42 pm
A few of the podcasts I listen to mention next year being a challenge re: FA / finances. This is predicated on the # of expiring contracts and Abrams own admission next year is going to be tough re: contracts given the money doled out this year if the cap doesn't have a more optimistic outcome.

I was curious about it, and while there are a lot of expiring contracts a couple things stand out. (keeping in mind currently 10 draft picks).

1) 39 players under contract
2) there are a few players where cash can be freed up without too bad a hit, given some hidden flexibility should it be needed.
3) Position wise, outside of DL, there doesn't seem to be any 1 group really with a significant run of contracts expiring.
4) I think this is the first year since DG was here he didn't draft at least 1 of a DT or an OL.
5) DG has shown a track record pre/post Judge to cluster draft.
6) DG has drafted a player from Georgia every year since he took over as GM

Which leads me to believe for 2022, if the giants have a winning 2021 that both DL and OL will be addressed with a top 100 pick and a player who should be competing to start year 1. I also think they will likely draft more than 1 DL.

In short, I'm going to be interested this time next year on how the DL class looks with particular eyes on the SEC, and also just look at Georgia players.

Probably a little early

to be thinking about next year, but we do have some big money that I think will come off the books. I would be shocked if Solder returns and he would save $14,000,000. I think Shep also saves $6,500,000.

We have a lot of free agents, but I'm not sure many are big money guys outside of Peppers.

Hernandez, Lorenzo Carter, Obenigbo, Evan Engram... No leonard williams scenarios.

Peppers would be tough to lose, but I think Logan Ryan and Xavier Mckinney might make him expandable.
saquon?

They already picked up his 5th year option.

Solder is set to make 14M next season with a dead cash hit of 4M for a cap savings of $10M if cut after 2021. I wouldn't be surprised if Solder were brought back again for 2022 on another cut if he proves to be an adequate backup this season.
Last year of EE

I would be surprised if he were not traded by pre-season. Can't see a spot for him, not on this team.

Yeah, they may let Peppers go and hernandez if price isnt right. With 2 first, just get a SS and IOL in the first round

I doubt they trade him now. If they were going to move him they would have done so during the draft. I don't think the Giants want to go into the season relying on Smith and Toilolo as the #2 and #3 TE's again.

I wish that the Giants signed Nick Eubanks and/or Kenny Yeboah as UDFA's.

Solder is set to make $18,000,000 with a $4,000,000 hit.
