So I was flipping through Howie Long's book Football for Dummies and I found myself reading about the 3-4 eagle defense (also known as a 2-5 Eagle because of the linebackers).
Basically in a 3-4 Eagle, it has the appearance and personnel of a 3-4 defense, but instead of a nose tackle, there's three inside linebackers, with one lined up near the line of scrimmage and two more behind, who can either shoot offensive line gaps or drop into pass coverage. With two decent and unsung defensive tackles in Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams and the cornerbacks we've accrued via free agency and the draft, would the Giants try to run this defense?
Basically, they replace the 0-tech DL with a middle linebacker.
He doesn't necessarily need to be stout, he needs to be quick enough to shoot gaps and drop into pass coverage.
Decent? Unsung?
I’m going to disagree with your assessment of them.

So... they're below average yet All-Pro?
The late-80s one, yes. Devised by Fritz Shurmur, uncle of Pat.

How so?

Dexter Lawrence is all-pro?
You really love starting threads.

I don't think sarcasm means what you think it means, especially in the context of your prior post.

I was responding to the guy who disagreed with my assessment of Williams and Lawrence; they are decent defensive linemen, who don't get a lot of recognition. Do you disagree with that statement? That part was sincere, the response to John's disagreement was sarcastic.

Are they BOTH all-pro? Was that your sarcasm?

Yes. And I don't see why you should be getting on my case over one assessment or starting threads.

They're both all-pro? Are you sure about that? Dexter Lawrence was all-pro? Was Leonard Williams? Neither even made the Pro Bowl last year (although you could argue - not sarcastically - that LW was snubbed).
Just try to offer facts. And start less threads - not every brain fart that you come up with needs to be its own thread (it would have saved you the trouble of suggesting that the Giants should have traded the #11 pick for Miami's #50 straight up).
Do you typically try to use "I was being sarcastic" as your excuse when you get caught with your pants down?
I've primarily thought of Dexter Lawrence as a nose tackle and physically he fits the bill at 6'4", 342 lbs, but there's a lot of people here who think he's much more than that and think he'd be wasted in that role.
Sometimes I wonder if the Giants could have gotten Jones with the 6th pick, an edge rusher (say Montez Sweat) at the 17th, and Lawrence at the 30th (the pick used to draft Deandre Baker). I mean, how many teams are looking for a 340lb, run-stuffing defensive tackle in the first round? Only one I can think of is the Patriots with Vince Wilfork.
