A post draft 53

In my first run through, I have 41 guys I am pretty sure make the roster assuming health. I made one surprise cut. I kept Santoso over Dixon. Odds are I am wrong but call that a hunch probably based on a wish. I have 12 spots left. I will make my choices in the 2nd run through.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Figure for the 12 spots I have open, have to keep at least one more RB, 1 more WR (and probably 2), 2 more OL (and probably 3), 2 more LB (and as many as 4 possibly) and 1 more CB (and probably 2 but possibly 3). I have 9 spots probably allotted to specific positions.

So at RB, Brightwell is the guy who has the inside track. The other possibility is that Penny is the 3rd RB in addition to being the FB (or keep Gillaspia as FB). And Brightwell goes to the PS. But not to overcomplicate things, I will go with Brightwell.

At WR, I think we keep 2 more. Between, Mack, Pettis and Ross (and maybe Core comes back but I won't consider him now), Ross seems to have the inside track. But if he is the 5th WR, he needs to play STs and he doesn't. So I think he needs to win a role playing WR or win the return job. I think it is as likely as not that he doesn't beat out Slayton or Toney for snaps. And Pettis may be the better KR option. So while the conventional wisdom is Ross over Pettis and Mack, I will go with Mack as #5 and Pettis as #6. One caveat: if Ross shows enough that they feel he will be good protection against an injury, they could try to go with Mack on the PS. Probably a low risk he gets claimed. In that case, Ross probably is inactive most weeks without a STs role.

At OL, I am not sure that our 9th OL is on the roster but for now the next 3 to me are Harrison, Murphy and Fulton. I will assume all 3 stick.

Keeping a 6th DL is not a definite but I think Odenigbo is likely to make it. I am rooting for Speaks but the drafting of Elerson Smith probably made his chances pretty low.

At LB, figure Ragland makes it. And I think we keep 2 more. Brown and Coughlin are draft picks form last year. I will say Brown for sure. And Coughlin will have to beat Anderson out. I am mentally cutting Ximines and hoping he comes in looking completely different. Like Beal. So...forced to pick, I will go with Anderson over Coughlin.

CB-I think Yiadom makes it. And Harper v R Williams for the 6th spot. I will say Harper wins and Williams goes to PS but the reverse could be true too. Beal, like Ximines is already gone for me. And if he comes in and shocks me, it will be gravy.

S-I like Hartage but I think we upgraded talent all around too much for him to stick.

And that completes my 12 spots open leaving me with this 53.

Quick question: On some of the projections under “battling” where more than a few are involved, how many spots do you project are opened to be filled by the “battler” winners?
Oh and re Fulton,
Big Blue '56 : 5/4/2021 1:56 pm : link
you don’t view him as a veteran lock?
I think Platzgummer...
Johnny5 : 5/4/2021 1:59 pm : link
... has a roster exemption again. Not sure how long that lasts though.
I don't see Pettis
jvm52106 : 5/4/2021 2:01 pm : link
beating out Ross.
What has Penny done?
90.Cal : 5/4/2021 2:04 pm : link
Wish we could get more out of our FB if we keep one... almost would rather see Kaden Smith and Levine Toilolo play that spot more than Penny... he gives us nothing in the passing game and I for one never noticed him being a particularly good at run blocking like I have noticed with both Kaden and Levine... I even want to see the new FB make the team over Penny if anything, at least he is good special teamer which I can't even say about Penny..
with the additional game are rosters expected to expand
Dinger : 5/4/2021 2:05 pm : link
if even by 1 player? Seems they should consider that, but knowing the greed they will probably keep roster the same.

Agreed, unless Ross gets hurt again or looks like garbage in camp and pre-season he is a near lock.

This is a great point. NFL literally cut salaries and added games this off season. NFL players union is the the worst in all of sports.
Excellent Work

I'm higher on Ross than you:

WR (Kept)-Golladay, Shepard, Slayton, Toney, Ross, Mack, Pettis
TE (Kept)-Engram, Rudolph, Toilolo
Good Job Mort

Just a check -- you have Brown making it as a final LB twice. Go with Coughlin as well ?

So below the initial 41, I had laid out what I saw as the number open and how I would allot it.

There is always some flexibility. For example, can keep 8 OL and more on the PS. Or 9 or 10 and less on the PS. All depending on who would get through waivers, injuries at the time etc.

I don't see Fulton as a lock at all. He wasn't very good the last year or so. He will have to be better than what we have and what is out there. I think he has a good shot because we want to have some vet depth and we don't have anyone that jumps out at me right now as young that we would need to keep over him. But not a lock.

Good catch. Brown does 2x as much for me as others. Let me think on that.

Coughlin v Hartage perhaps. Maybe if Beal or Ximines step up. Pushed to choose who I think is most likely to be on the final roster, I would go Coughlin. But I am not sure they will keep 10 LBs.

You should be. Now is the time for optimism.

My thinking is by this point, usually a guy is who he seems to have been. The second chances and stops don't usually turn out better. So I decided not to fantasize but it is more fun your way.

I also felt I could let the Ross fantasy go once we drafted Toney. Ross would be a more necessary fantasy if we didn't find a better version in the draft but we did. So now if he does step up, it is a nice surprise.
I think Stills could be a sleeper this year.
CMc in 342 : 5/4/2021 2:45 pm : link
Though it may be the kiss of death to say,"Don't sleep on Sills." (a la Pio!)
I
jtfuoco : 5/4/2021 2:48 pm : link
Agree with most of this projection but I have this feeling WR Sills is a dark horse to make this roster. I have a feeling the staff likes him over the other bubble guys and it's between him and Ross for that last spot. I can't wait to see some of these Roster battles in preseason
Thanks - typo - Sills not Stills !
CMc in 342 : 5/4/2021 2:52 pm : link
Would make him even more of a dark horse.
Oops,
Big Blue '56 : 5/4/2021 2:57 pm : link
should have read the “below 41” closer..
I think its Sills vs. Mack
SLIM_ : 5/4/2021 2:57 pm : link
There is a need for another bigger receiver (Golladay is our only big receiver) and I think this will be a good training camp battle.

Murderer!
If they’re keeping 6 CBs Rodarius Willams will be on the 53
BillT : 5/4/2021 3:38 pm : link
Can’t see them keeping both Yiadom and Harper over him. And I rarely if ever say this but I think he’d be claimed if they put him on the PS.
Hard to envision Ross
Ron Johnson : 5/4/2021 3:39 pm : link
not making it. The Giants are desperate to improve team speed. They want him to be their version of Ted Ginn.

Have the rules on size of practice squad been finalized?
Ivan15 : 5/5/2021 8:57 am : link
It seems to me that they should be a compromise between 2019 and 2020 rules.

We are still in a pandemic. The league and the NFLPA both are acting that way. There is still a threat that players will have to sit out for a week or more if they contract COVID.

And 1 game has been added, which is almost going ton necessitate roster expansion and maybe even limits on how many games a player can be active.

he doesn't have to catch everything. He needs to be enough of a deep threat to keep a safety from coming down into the box.
Okay but keeping in mind that the Giants may play 3-4, 4–3, 5-2, 2-5
Ivan15 : 5/5/2021 9:15 am : link
Fronts, you need more than 6-7 LBs, Also, Odenigbo is about as close to a lock as anyone you say is “battling”. He is the best “Tuck-like” player available to move around and provide a pass rush from a 4-3.

There has to be more than 2 RBs active for every game, unless you want Toney to be the 3rd RB. I think the #6 draft pick will get a real good look before they bring in another veteran.
