I was surprised when the Falcons drafted Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida, over Ja'maar Chase, WR, LSU.
To me you always take the elite player at the premium position (WR, QB, CB, Edge, OT) over the elite player at the non-premium position.
In addition, there has been speculation that Atlanta is going to trade Julio Jones, a productive pass catcher at a premium position, so a replacement at WR would be necessary.
Adding to the argument, Chase's stats are far superior to those of Kyle Pitts:
Pitts:
Rec/Yds/Avg/TD
______________
2019: 54/649/12/5
2020: 43/770/18/12
Chase opted out in 2020 but look at his 2019 stats:
2019: 84/1780/21/20
Should the Atlanta Falcons have picked Chase over Pitts?
However, the better question is did they err in choosing Pitts over Sewell. I'm inclined to say no, but it's a better question because Ryan isn't a mobile player and could certainly use more beef up front...
This tells me you haven’t watched Pitts play. That position value bulls hit is obsolete in today’s NFL. Pitts is a flat out beast and mismatch for anyone lined up against him. He moves better than alot of 6’1, 6’2 WRs in today’s draft. This dude is going to be a beast and instant impact player.
The thing is the player they should have picked was not Chase. They needed Sewell or a QB. Jones and Ridley are a great 1-2 combination and if you draft Sewell at 4 they could have dealt up from 35 to 29, 30, or 31 and landed Elijah Moore while having 5th year option. Imagine Moore in the slot with Jones and Ridley on the outside esepcially with adding Sewell to give Matt Ryan more time to throw.

What makes guys like Kelce, Kittle, and Gronk so great is that they are always a threat to be run blocking so you have to respect that. Darren Waller you know he is going to be running routes like a WR. I have a feeling Pitts will be productive for a TE, but it will not be the type of production that actually translates to wins.

You don’t know that, no one does, but he will be an impact and productive player from day 1 as an split end. That’s why they drafted him, to create mismatches. Also with the news that the Falcons might trade and move on from Julio after this year, this was the smartest move they could’ve made. He’ll end up in the Julio role and he’s going to be great, there’s no doubt in my mind about that. Ok hes not going to be an in-line blocker, oh well, they’ll have another blocking TE handle those duties like we do. This assumption that he won’t be great because he doesn’t block as an in-line TE is bullshit right along with the positional value shit. This isn’t the 90s or early 00’s, this is a flat out passing league, he does that exceptionally well. Just like they’re going away from strictly pocket passing QBs with no mobility. The league is evolving rapidly, those stuck in the past with those phrases I mentioned above, it’s time for y’all to either accept it or don’t watch the sport anymore.
And, there is a very good chance that they trade Jones.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Let's put aside the opening statement that says people don't know anything yet - but then a certainty is uttered:
"You don’t know that, no one does, but he will be an impact and productive player from day 1 as an split end"
But did you really just say he's replacing Julio Jones as a wideout when he is gone?? Not only is that a stretch, but you're telling people what they do and don't know and come up with that nugget of crap?
George kittle isn’t worth a top five pick?? Gronk in his prime? Of course they are.
"Safe" matters.
I always recognize what an amateur I am dealing in a field of the most dedicated professionals in the world so I qualify, but based on that little knowledge I think if you put pits on the outside he would be a better wide receiver than Chase and a much safer one.
Both the man and the circumstances remind me of a little of the saquon Barkley pick. Both were clearly the best position of players offered and not by a narrow amount. They were both the safest. That can never be a bad choice

Let's put aside the positional value bs for a second. If he's going to play like a WR and is a mismatch for anyone, shouldn't he then have better #s than the WRs he's drafted over? Or at least comparable numbers that allow you to project him surpassing those players in the NFL?
Travis Kelce is a beast. Who's taking Kelce over Hopkins?

In a redraft of 2010, who goes first: Antonio Brown or Gronk?
Even better one - who goes 2nd in 2017 redraft: Kamara, McCaffrey, Kittle, Godwin? (Engram's a lock for #1)
No need to overthink it.
