Linebackers and Right Guard

giantsfanforlife : 5/4/2021 8:55 pm
What do you think of our linebackers? Who will be starting next to Martinez? Who will play right guard?

Anything can happen from signing more free agency to signing player getting cut before the season starts.
Either Ragland or Crowder
Anakim : 5/4/2021 9:02 pm : link
And probably Zach Fulton, but hopefully we sign Trai Turner to compete :)
Tae Crowder will more than likely start
Jay on the Island : 5/4/2021 9:03 pm : link
But the Giants will be in nickel often with only Martinez inside. I am excited to see how the OLB battle plays out. I expect Carter to start out on the PUP list so that could be great news for Ximines.

As for RG I expect Lemieux and Hernandez to start but I’m not sure which side they will start on. Also I wouldn’t count out out Kyle Murphy on winning a starting spot. The Giants passing on guards in the draft says a lot about how they feel about Lemieux and Murphy IMO. Fulton should provide solid depth.
Who won the LG position?
robbieballs2003 : 5/4/2021 9:13 pm : link
I'd like to know.
Ragland is a solid addition to the LB group
Rjanyg : 5/4/2021 9:30 pm : link
It’s gonna be interesting who they keep on the outside LB group

X-man need to create his own great news, regardless of who else is healthy. It doesn't do the Giants any good for him to get a spot by default. I'd assume this is his last chance to step up

i think our starting OL is Thomas-Lemieux-Gates-Hernandez-Peart with Solder as swing tackle and Fulton as immediate backup in case of injury/poor play

i think our starting linebackers are:

Martinez and Crowder on the inside, Odenigbo and Carter on the outside, with Ojulari and Ximines coming in on passing downs

Ragland and Anderson coming in to spell Crowder/Odenigbo
the LB
ryanmkeane : 5/4/2021 9:51 pm : link
position will be interesting. we have stock piled a bunch
I talked about this
Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/4/2021 9:56 pm : link
in my draft review... don't get too wed to depth charts and who is "starting". Giants are going to play mostly 5-6 defensive backs. Peppers will be a LB in many sets.

Not sure Carter will be back very early..
ILB

to me is still weak. Martinez is an ironman but aside from him who can make plays there? (although reading Martinez was banging the drum for Crowder to play is encouraging)
Crowder brings a lot more to pass coverage than Ragland
Jimmy Googs : 5/4/2021 10:22 pm : link
who actually isn’t too bad coming after the QB. Nice variety here with Martinez holding down the fort.

Not the strongest of ILB in league but better than what the Giants have rolled out in years...
As Eric stated
ryanmkeane : 5/4/2021 10:30 pm : link
it won’t matter much who starts. We finally have a decent group of LBs who, outside of Martinez, will be on the field depending on what the game plan/situation presents.

I didn’t realize Carter might not be ready for the start of the year. I actually thought he was injured in preseason of 2020, and forgot it was week 5.
Rotations possible again at the guard positions?
HopePhil and Optimistic : 5/4/2021 10:34 pm : link
I agree with ryankeane with the starters, and the vets (Fulton, Harrison and Solder) as backups in case of injury or poor performance, but I think they’ll try to rotate Kyle Murphy in a bit to take over for Hernandez in 2022.

Young olinemen on the practice squad will be groomed for backup duty next year as the vets are on one year deals.

My thought is that our players have different skill sets and who’s good at what will determine who’s on the field. For example with the outside linebackers, Odenigbo and Ojulari might be on the field as rushbackers, with the former sometimes as a defensive end, Cam Brown if they want a SAM linebacker to cover the tight end. For the inside linebacker spots, Ragland might be there on running plays, Crowder for passing plays.

agreed. giants will definitely have 3 safeties in on almost every play. figure a second LB on run downs (ragland) who will be replaced in nickel packages by robinson / holmes

as for the edge guys that will probably depend on situation as to who is in the game
Giants also
Paulie Walnuts : 5/4/2021 11:43 pm : link
Shuttled guards in and out last year this will probably happen again
I wouldn't be surprised to see vets (or waivers added at both spots)
Eric on Li : 5/4/2021 11:51 pm : link
remember the difference Jamon Brown made after he was waived by the LAR?

I think they want to give the young guys they have a chance (Lemiuex, Hernandez, Crowder, Ragland) but won't hesitate to make moves if it appears necessary. And fortunately those are positions where you can usually find replacement level players if you look hard enough.

And they now have some extra draft picks which will make it easier to cherry pick a guy they like on someone else's chopping block with a late round pick just like they did with Yiadom last summer.
I think as Giants fans
blueblood : 5/5/2021 12:11 am : link
we need to evolve in our way of thinking..

we tend to want to pigeon hole players into positions, when the game is becoming far more multiple, in terms of formation and player use. Who is starting might or who gets the majority of the snaps can change from week to week and even within the game itself.

Great post sir. That's the name of the game now.

Martinez. Crowder. Ragland is not weak
the one big change with Judge
Dankbeerman : 5/5/2021 7:15 am : link
is he uses his entire roster. just about everybody active got some snaps last year.

The key in todays NFL is a good rotation/using packages. we come out with different personel looks on D as much as on O.

I think Fulton is just insurance if Hernandez struggles moving to RG. I bet Murphy will rotate in at both LG and RG too.

Also wiuldnt be surprised if Ragland and Crowder both hqd the same % of snaps
I think at OG it will be the best 2 of 3 out of Lemieux, Hernandez and
Victor in CT : 5/5/2021 7:52 am : link
Fulton. SOmebody could be added as well, maybe Turner (I'm not wild about him) or someone else.

Not sure at LB. Lots of options. May not be just 1, could be a rotation.
I am not too worried about
section125 : 5/5/2021 8:17 am : link
rotating LBs. That makes sense. I do not like rotating OL. That needs to be a unit. Not that a series off in the heat is a bad thing, but in general, the starting 5 should play 95% of the snaps. It does help getting the bench players experience in games, but not sure rotating frequently is best for oline.
Cannot suggest that the NY Giants do not have volume

of linebacker choices at both inside and outside any longer.

Assume what they are looking at now is where does the quality come from based on the various schemes/looks they want to showcase. Probably going to be one of the more competitive camp battles this summer, and it would be ideal if one or two guys really put it together this year.

One item - would hope we have seen the last of Devante Downs on the field any longer.
