Would you trade Solder to the Broncos?

CMicks3110 : 5/5/2021 10:28 am
Broncos are exploring the right tackle market—they made several calls yesterday before James’ diagnosis was determined—and are expected to bring in a few OTs for visits in coming days. #9sports

Solder signed with NYG in part because he didn't want to be too far away from his sons doctors.

This. Agreed 100%. And what would they even get for him? Not worth it.
I thought Solder was from Colorado so if there was any place
CMicks3110 : 5/5/2021 10:36 am : link
Besides NYG to go, I would think Denver would work
No
Giantimistic : 5/5/2021 10:36 am : link
When or if one of our tackles go down who do we have to trade for then?
He's NYG's swing tackle, at a minimum
JonC : 5/5/2021 10:36 am : link
not to mention his son's health is obviously been part of the decision tree for NYG.
depends on what they offer
Giantsfan79 : 5/5/2021 10:38 am : link
but don't discount his role as a swing tackle/mentor to our two young tackles.
I'm not 100% sold that hes on the bench game 1...
bLiTz 2k : 5/5/2021 10:40 am : link
If he shows up in excellent shape with a year off, who knows...he might win the RT job at least to start the year.

Of course BBI will implode and call Peart a bust, which of course is not the case, but a healthy motivated Solder is not a bad thing going into camp.
No way.
barens : 5/5/2021 10:40 am : link
I know the expectations around here for Solder weren't met, but he's more than good enough to start, and he's a great option as a backup. The Giants went out this offseason, spent all this money to make the team better, and then all it takes is 1 injury to set us back at that position.

That is more important than adding another draft pick, which they already have an abundance of.
Absolutely not.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 5/5/2021 10:40 am : link
We have no clue if Peart can be a full time starter and Thomas was spotty enough that there’s a significant need for an experienced backup here. However, Solder can’t be as crappy as he was in 2019 or there’s little purpose in keeping him around.
My first thought was yes, but as always you have to figure
Dinger : 5/5/2021 10:41 am : link
who steps in to take his place as either the starting right tackle or swing tackle and is that person as good as what Solder provides. This goes without taking into consideration the personal considerations.
I hate the idea of Solder starting
Biteymax22 : 5/5/2021 10:45 am : link
But really like the idea of him as a back up swing tackle.

If we traded him anyone we brought in to replace him would likely be a down grade. With that being said, there's a price for everything, but Denver would have to over pay.
If we look to trade anyone it should be Shepard
90.Cal : 5/5/2021 10:45 am : link

Why the hell would anyone trade away the swing tackle?
ZogZerg : 5/5/2021 10:50 am : link
What would the Giants do if we lost one of our tackles for the year?

It would be idiotic to trade him.

+1. I love these posts that suggest these type moves with no backup plan. You trade Solder who right now at a minimum is our swing tackle and maybe our starting RT and then we have lost whatever depth we have. So sure lets trade him to Denver and then we are the team inviting OL candidates off the street for a tryout. Just dumb.

Jay on the Island : 5/5/2021 10:58 am : link
Solder is going so provide more value as the swing tackle than the Giants would receive in return. Realistically no team would offer no more than a 6th or 7th round pick.
No
Anakim : 5/5/2021 11:00 am : link
Whether anyone would like to admit it or not, he's quality insurance in case Peart falters.
They clearly liked Solder at the price point we paid than the other
Zeke's Alibi : 5/5/2021 11:02 am : link
Swing tackles. Why would that change now, especially with anyone half decent for role signed?

Solder has his weaknesses
LakeGeorgeGiant : 5/5/2021 11:04 am : link
but as a swing tackle he likely has more value here than he does in a trade.

Good guy to have with these young OL.
The nature of the forum
Big Al : 5/5/2021 11:07 am : link
Let no possibility no matter how unlikely be discussed. Not a criticism nor discouraging to such threads but to be expected for those wanting to discuss the team in a different way. Find some unique point to bring up that has not been discussed. You can have only so many threads labeled offensive line and go over the same stuff 100 times.

Actually keep them coming.
Would I trade him?
UberAlias : 5/5/2021 11:21 am : link
That depends on compensation. I would not trade him for peanuts but continuing to add ammunition for next years draft is certainly appealing.
I agree
Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/5/2021 11:25 am : link
with Uber... it depends on the compensation. If they offered us a great deal, sure.
Yes I would trade him...
bw in dc : 5/5/2021 11:32 am : link
The guy hasn't played competitive NFL football in a long, long time. And when last seen he was a liability. So to think he's going to bounce back and be competent is a real stretch.

Yes!
Trainmaster : 5/5/2021 11:37 am : link
We need the Broncos 2022 2nd rounder! I want two picks in each round in 2022.

Seriously, Solder's child's health care is probably a key consideration. Solder choosing to retire versus move is a possibility.
I would approach Solder about the idea first
LeonBright45 : 5/5/2021 11:37 am : link
If he was cool with it I would re-sign Cam Fleming, who really wasn't that bad last year at RT. I liked the group we had and I was hoping to be done with Solder. He was truly horrible for two straight years and then took the year off. I don't see him getting better for us. I can't stand the sight of him because we had counted on his sorry ass to protect Eli's blind side. Solder, more than anyone was responsible for Gettleman's plans falling flat on it's face. I'm glad we're back on track and I think bringing Fleming back, signing RG-Trai Turner, and trading Solder for fair compensation would improve our O-line situation a bit.
As others have mentioned...
PwndPapi : 5/5/2021 11:41 am : link
1) He's currently our swing tackle.
2) He took a significant pay cut to stay with NYG despite being moved off his position. Moving him after his agreeing to take a cut simply would be bad optics.
3) He still counts $10M against next year's cap and we take a $4M dead cap hit if cut or traded. With this in consideration, I don't think we look to move him.
4) If they were looking to move him, they would have drafted a replacement or competition at OT. They did not.

If Peart is not ready we are relying on guys like Fleming or whatever is left on the scrap heap.

Okay, I'll bite - what's a "great deal"?
A ton of free agent vet OTs available but most are over 30, except for
Ivan15 : 5/5/2021 11:56 am : link
Fleming, 28.

Schwartz, Massie and Okung are out there. Even Newhouse.

They don’t need a tackle who hasn’t played well in 3 years.

I would want at least a Day 2 pick
I'm not sure any reasonable deal even we could do it.
Zeke's Alibi : 5/5/2021 11:59 am : link
They are comfortable with the OL, not because of the top end talent, but because at least it's deep and protected from a couple injuries should they arise.

Trade Solder and if AT or Peart gets hurt, we are looking at an OL that was awfully similar to some of the trash we trotted out there the past decade. We'd have some decent skill players, but tough to function with an OL. We are supposed to be evaluating and developing our QB, good luck doing that with crap in front of him.
You always listen to offers
AnnapolisMike : 5/5/2021 11:59 am : link
But it would have to be a really good one IMO. The Giants OL is thin with depth. I would suggest that any Giant in the last year of thier contract is potential trade bait at this point.
Honestly, based on the fact Fleming is out there, sounds like they
Zeke's Alibi : 5/5/2021 12:01 pm : link
have high hopes Solder can return to form after some time off and a competent OL coach.
unless
ryanmkeane : 5/5/2021 12:02 pm : link
Denver offered something stupid like a pick in the first 3 rounds, you have to think Solder is the swing for this year, and hope he can be adequate in that role
I
AcidTest : 5/5/2021 12:03 pm : link
probably wouldn't, unless the compensation was very good. Aside from the likely impact on Solder and his family, as someone noted there would still be a substantial cap hit. That cap hit would be made worse by the fact that we'd have to sign his replacement.

A second or third for a guy who hasn't played in over a year and he's 33?? That's pretty eager... ;)

Peart vs Soldier will be one of camp's best competition.

Even if he loses out, Soldier has tremendous value as a swing tackle, and being a reserve at both spots.
If his perspective relative to family could be considered and

Just a reminder what Solder looked like when last seen...

If he can't compete for a starting role he's still good veteran depth
Britt in VA : 5/5/2021 12:34 pm : link
to have.

I bet Green Bay or Kansas City would have liked Solder on their bench at the end of last season.

The cap consequences for next year would not be good, especially if the cap is still low because stadium income is limited.

Alternatively, a year to rest his body while his son's health also improves may help him on the field.
I wouldn't trade our 3rd tackle
BSIMatt : 5/5/2021 12:56 pm : link
no. I like Peart and want him to win the job. Having Solder as insurance for either tackle sport seems too important to me.

Okay, that's a possibility - sure. But OL is a position that is based on contact, physicality, and reps; it's much different than running patterns and trying to break press coverage as a WR.

But, yes, that seems to be the hope...
I actually think Solder is better than we've seen...
Britt in VA : 5/5/2021 1:00 pm : link
