Broncos are exploring the right tackle market—they made several calls yesterday before James’ diagnosis was determined—and are expected to bring in a few OTs for visits in coming days. #9sports
I know the expectations around here for Solder weren't met, but he's more than good enough to start, and he's a great option as a backup. The Giants went out this offseason, spent all this money to make the team better, and then all it takes is 1 injury to set us back at that position.
That is more important than adding another draft pick, which they already have an abundance of.
We have no clue if Peart can be a full time starter and Thomas was spotty enough that there’s a significant need for an experienced backup here. However, Solder can’t be as crappy as he was in 2019 or there’s little purpose in keeping him around.
My first thought was yes, but as always you have to figure
who steps in to take his place as either the starting right tackle or swing tackle and is that person as good as what Solder provides. This goes without taking into consideration the personal considerations.
But really like the idea of him as a back up swing tackle.
If we traded him anyone we brought in to replace him would likely be a down grade. With that being said, there's a price for everything, but Denver would have to over pay.
What would the Giants do if we lost one of our tackles for the year?
It would be idiotic to trade him.
+1. I love these posts that suggest these type moves with no backup plan. You trade Solder who right now at a minimum is our swing tackle and maybe our starting RT and then we have lost whatever depth we have. So sure lets trade him to Denver and then we are the team inviting OL candidates off the street for a tryout. Just dumb.
Solder is going so provide more value as the swing tackle than the Giants would receive in return. Realistically no team would offer no more than a 6th or 7th round pick.
Let no possibility no matter how unlikely be discussed. Not a criticism nor discouraging to such threads but to be expected for those wanting to discuss the team in a different way. Find some unique point to bring up that has not been discussed. You can have only so many threads labeled offensive line and go over the same stuff 100 times.
The guy hasn't played competitive NFL football in a long, long time. And when last seen he was a liability. So to think he's going to bounce back and be competent is a real stretch.
If he was cool with it I would re-sign Cam Fleming, who really wasn't that bad last year at RT. I liked the group we had and I was hoping to be done with Solder. He was truly horrible for two straight years and then took the year off. I don't see him getting better for us. I can't stand the sight of him because we had counted on his sorry ass to protect Eli's blind side. Solder, more than anyone was responsible for Gettleman's plans falling flat on it's face. I'm glad we're back on track and I think bringing Fleming back, signing RG-Trai Turner, and trading Solder for fair compensation would improve our O-line situation a bit.
1) He's currently our swing tackle.
2) He took a significant pay cut to stay with NYG despite being moved off his position. Moving him after his agreeing to take a cut simply would be bad optics.
3) He still counts $10M against next year's cap and we take a $4M dead cap hit if cut or traded. With this in consideration, I don't think we look to move him.
4) If they were looking to move him, they would have drafted a replacement or competition at OT. They did not.
They are comfortable with the OL, not because of the top end talent, but because at least it's deep and protected from a couple injuries should they arise.
Trade Solder and if AT or Peart gets hurt, we are looking at an OL that was awfully similar to some of the trash we trotted out there the past decade. We'd have some decent skill players, but tough to function with an OL. We are supposed to be evaluating and developing our QB, good luck doing that with crap in front of him.
But it would have to be a really good one IMO. The Giants OL is thin with depth. I would suggest that any Giant in the last year of thier contract is potential trade bait at this point.
Honestly, based on the fact Fleming is out there, sounds like they
Denver offered something stupid like a pick in the first 3 rounds, you have to think Solder is the swing for this year, and hope he can be adequate in that role
probably wouldn't, unless the compensation was very good. Aside from the likely impact on Solder and his family, as someone noted there would still be a substantial cap hit. That cap hit would be made worse by the fact that we'd have to sign his replacement.

Alternatively, a year to rest his body while his son's health also improves may help him on the field.

Okay, that's a possibility - sure. But OL is a position that is based on contact, physicality, and reps; it's much different than running patterns and trying to break press coverage as a WR.
But, yes, that seems to be the hope...
I actually think Solder is better than we've seen...

My guess is that Solder would simply retire rather than move.
This. Agreed 100%. And what would they even get for him? Not worth it.
Of course BBI will implode and call Peart a bust, which of course is not the case, but a healthy motivated Solder is not a bad thing going into camp.

Also Yes!

Also Yes!
Let me qualify it: It would have to be for no lower than a 4 or 5..If unrealistic then, NO..

Solder signed with NYG in part because he didn't want to be too far away from his sons doctors.

Good guy to have with these young OL.
Actually keep them coming.
Seriously, Solder's child's health care is probably a key consideration. Solder choosing to retire versus move is a possibility.

If Peart is not ready we are relying on guys like Fleming or whatever is left on the scrap heap.

Okay, I'll bite - what's a "great deal"?
Schwartz, Massie and Okung are out there. Even Newhouse.
They don’t need a tackle who hasn’t played well in 3 years.

I would want at least a Day 2 pick

A second or third for a guy who hasn't played in over a year and he's 33?? That's pretty eager... ;)
Even if he loses out, Soldier has tremendous value as a swing tackle, and being a reserve at both spots.

Just a reminder what Solder looked like when last seen...
I bet Green Bay or Kansas City would have liked Solder on their bench at the end of last season.
