BREAKING. Shocker. Rangers have fired John Davidson and Jeff Gorton, Post has learned. Chris Drury will remain with organization and will have prominent role.
Sources say that #NYR president John Davidson and GM Jeff Gorton scurried to distance themselves from the team statement that was issued on Tuesday night, telling other executives that they did not know it was in the works until after it was released.
But a divergence of philosophies emerged between Dolan and the Davidson-Gorton ticket, with sources indicating that the CEO believes that it is time to take the next step in this process while the front office people have continued to preach patience and a longer-view panoramic take of situation.
As well, it is believed that the hockey hierarchy’s collection of skill players at the expense of will players did not sit well with Dolan. The recent mismatches against the Islanders highlighted the team’s deficiencies in grit and leadership and may have accelerated, if not prompted, this stunning decision.

I'm not in love with Gorton/Davidson (they've done a lot of good, some bad) but it is absolutely horrifying that Dolan is pushing his views on management.

Like many of you, I assume this had to do with the events of the past 48 hours. I don’t believe Davidson/Gorton had anything to do with last night’s NYR statement; it was Dolan-driven....(1/2)

However, there is word Dolan was unhappy with this NYR season and wanted to make a change. Seems crazy to me, because they have a come a long, long way in two years...but he’s the owner.
Ballsy move. I think this whole Caps thing is an organizational embarrassment from the players on the ice to the coaching staff to the front office. Total pacifism on the ice, and the whiny bitch letter to the league following just awful looks. And this all on top of a season where the beat up on bad teams and get clobbered by good teams, like losing 9-0 over 2 games to the Islanders with the playoffs on the line.

I’m told the firing of Gorton and Davidson by NYR is coincidental and not related to the statement issued yesterday related to Tom Wilson. Another source says ownership felt the Rangers underachieved this season.

That is absolutely insane. Absolutely INSANE. Great. The Knicks are doing well, so Dolan has turned his attention to the Rangers. Lovely.
This isn't good news. I wasn't Gorton's biggest fan, as he's made a few questionable moves, but Quinn is the bigger issue and JD was a Ranger through and through.
I'm just absolutely shocked. This honestly scares the hell out of me. I don't know what Dolan will do, but this isn't good...
this is a guy who owns (inherited) two of the most prized sports teams in America and gets so bent out of shape if someone has a sign or shirt mocking him. Could you imagine being that fortunate in life and being that thin-skinned at the same time. That is the problem with him, he can't stand dissension.

Is scheduled to be on the MKS at 4. He was booked before the announcement. It will be interesting if he cancels, which could mean he is in the mix for front office position?
IF this was performance based it would have happened after these last 3 games. This is too big of a coincidence that it occurred after the statement that it's not somehow related. Dolan doesn't stand for those that cross him.
this line from Brooks' column is it in a nutshell:
"The recent mismatches against the Islanders highlighted the team’s deficiencies in grit and leadership and may have accelerated, if not prompted, this stunning decision"
you can't have a hockey team full of conscientious objectors.
Dolan absolutely LOVES Allan Houston and Chris Drury when in fact they were given two of the worst contracts in the history of their respective sports. I mean both vastly underachieved (in Houston's case it was mostly injuries, but the 7-year, 100M deal was just an albatross on the neck of the Knicks).
Of course that doesn't have anything to do with their business and personnel intellect, but it's just weird.

There is causation, not correlation. They got big contracts because Dolan loved them. It's part of what makes him a bad owner, too many emotional decisions.
Starts off by winning the first overall pick for the first time ever. Hey, maybe things will be all right!

I love Mess the player. He'll always have a special place in my heart......but I have absolutely no desire to see him in a key role in the organization.
The hot rumor seems to be that Dolan was intent on firing Gorton, JD opposed it, so he decided to fire both of them. It happened early because Dolan was annoyed that they put the word out around the league that they had nothing to do with the statement issued yesterday, but it was going to happen regardless.

Don't forget Barry Beck calling out JD and the Rangers over not supporting Mark Pavelich prior to his death
making basketball or hockey decisions, BUT: the performance of this team the last month shows that they are seriously lacking in toughness and leadership. Beating up the Devils and Sabres then figure skating around the perimeter for 2 nights without a goal against the Islanders showed what they are. The total wimp out against the Caps was the exclamation point.

RE: The Rangers were the youngest team in hockey prior to the Devils'
fire sale - how have they "underachieved? No one really expected them to make the playoffs this year.
I think there is a difference between underachieving and not competing. Not competing is far worse. They did not compete in those 2 games at the Mausoleum, and they tend not to against the tough teams.

That's coaching, not roster construction, though.
not necessarily. they have a team of stylists, east-west guys who like to make pretty plays and not get dirty. too many of the same types.
The only time I've ever been that sickened watching a Ranger game
was exactly 47 years ago today. Game 7 of the Stanley Cup semifinals. If you're a Ranger fan of any age you know what happened. If you're my age and you saw it, it will never leave you.
All these years later it happened again Monday night. At least this time the elite skills players on the ice didn't just watch. The excuse then was that they would have been 3rd man in and thrown out of the game. History has shown in 1974 they lost the fight and game and made the wrong call. In 2021 they got humiliated and injured.
It doesn't surprise me in the least that Dolan fired people over his team being humiliated on the ice. In my opinion Gorton deserves to go for not having anyone on his team to protect his star players.
As a 50+ NYR fan I'll always love JD and I hate he got caught in a Dolan shit storm. If this somehow saves Quinn's job that will suck even more.
but, FWIW, he says a "source close to the Rangers" doesn't believe the "performance" spin, mainly because JD hasn't been back with the Rangers for very long at all.
RE: Playing the part of Phil Jackson....Mark Messier!

Don't think it's fair to lump anyone in with Jackson's tenure here in NY. JAckson didn't care or basically went full heel while GM here in NY. MEssier might be or might not be in over his head, but I don't think it's fair to assume he would be THAT bad and unprofessional.
But this is certainly weird.
RE: The only time I've ever been that sickened watching a Ranger game

a)Goons don't actually deter or protect anyone. They also don't really exist anymore.
b)It was a power play - what enforcer type was going to be on the ice to "protect" Panarin?
c)The three toughest guys on the team - Trouba, Lindgren, and Kreider - were all out.

good post Arnie. I'll never forget seeing Dale Rolfe get pummeled while the Rangers all watched.
I know that every NHL team doesn't have Dave Semenko skating next to Gretzky anymore. I get it. I said nothing about Goons.
Trouba and Kreider obviously aren't enough. Lindgren is 6' 200 lbs. He has no fear but takes more of a beating than he gives.
Like I said the other day. The Rangers are going to have to be willing to lose the skills part of trades to win the pieces fit better parts of trades or they'll never win anything with this group.
The Islanders and the Caps exposed them completely.

I figured there was outside pressure because of the strongly worded statement basically questioning the integrity of the league as a whole. You almost never see that.
But it looks like instead of the other owners and league pressuring them to be punished in some way (who may have happened still), it was Dolan firing them because they didn’t support the statement so my initial theory was wrong.

+1. This goonery/grit stuff is way overblown. The Caps/Pens/Isles aren't winning because of grit. They're winning because they're incredibly talented and deep teams with playoff experience and a blend of young talent and vets.
Scoring wins games. Not slow skating Neanderthals.
Not if Drury is running things, as has been speculated
They're both BU guys and Drury was one of the people pushing for Quinn to be hired in the first place. If Drury is indeed the new boss, then I expect Quinn to stick around, unfortunately.

Exactly what I said above. Quinn isn't going anywhere if Drury is the boss.
Had hoped that Dolan would continue to ignore the Rangers while this team grew up. Unfortunately not the case. Still wanting the team to hold on to its youth and not start trading talent for aging stars and goons. If anyone has underperformed this year it is Quinn.
They have excellent defensemen, but their forwards outside of Barzal are nothing special. They are incredibly well coached, particularly when compared to the Rangers. If the Rangers had hired Trotz instead of Quinn, they'd be in a very different place today.

Yeah this all comes off like high school tough guy talk. Boston has tough guys and Wilson took liberties with them anyway last month, got suspended.
Now we're honestly back to sandpaper and grit talk. F*cking Tanner Glass bs all over again.
RE: And look, I would like them to get some more size/physicality
But only if it's guys who can actually play. No more Tanner Glasses, no more Cody McLeods, or any other of their ilk.
Yes, they're well coached, but they're also seasoned having gone to the playoffs in each of the last two years. That experience breeds grit and a winning culture.
The Rangers are running out a collection of 19-21 year old forwards and 4/6 defenseman in either their first or 2nd season of play. That's the risk you take when you go with a youth movement and why you can't give rookies 20min of ice time a night and expect to contend.
Pittsburgh isn't 14 small forwards and 6 small defensemen. Or Washington or Boston or the Islanders. All teams the Rangers will need to beat and all filled with players that smash the Rangers skilled guys around and beat them like a drum on the scoreboard.
And Edmonton have been rebuilding for how many years, getting picks like Eichel and McDavid. This rebuild is in its infancy and they look to be on the brink of something special. Adding toughness and role players us what you do when you are close, like Tampa did. Evaluating and acquiring talent is what you do at this stage. This has nothing to do with hockey. This is an owner who is the biggest lowlife of a human being that there is. He found a way to try and fool Ranger fans into supporting him. My guess is DeAngelo is back in good graces. For those clueless fans, enjoy yourselves. They just ruined a rebuild on the brink of something special. Hoping anyone stays is about as relevant as an ant on an elephants ass. Rangers are finished.

Neither are the Rangers. Laf is 6'2". Kreider is 6'3". Chytil is 6'2". Kakko is 6'3". Zibanejad is 6'2". Kravstov is 6'3".

No question Trotz was a great get, not sure Gorton was even leaning that direction. Great coach, but I think you sell the Isles forwards a bit short, Beuavillier, Lee (they've been staying the course without him), their lines are balanced and productive, two way.
Mark Messier on the way the #NYR are currently built: "In my opinion, if you're going to win, you got to be able to win in the street and the alley. I particularly would not have built the team that didn't have answers in this regard."
Many of us have been saying the same thing, since at least CAR. Questions abound and will whoever gets in charge over-react?
No one's talking about the team, tonight or going forward: kids' heads must be absolutely spinning. Shitty.
The New York Rangers announced today that team President John Davidson and General Manager Jeff Gorton are leaving the organization, and Associate General Manager Chris Drury has been promoted to President and General Manager, effective immediately. Senior Advisor Glen Sather will work with Drury during this transition and continue to consult with the team.
"We want to thank JD and Jeff for their contributions to the organization. They are both great hockey professionals who worked hard for the Rangers, however, in order for the team to succeed in the manner our fans deserve, there needs to be a change in leadership," said James L. Dolan, executive chairman, MSG Sports. "Chris is a very sought-after executive and a strong leader, who has proven himself to be one of the top young minds in hockey. We are confident he will effectively guide the team to ensure the long-term success we promised Rangers fans."

The issue isn't size. It's youth.
Yea, I do think if you give Laf, Kakko, and perhaps Kravtsov a few years they will be able to play a hard and powerful game but we're not there yet. Kreider plays a nice, well-rounded game whereas Zibby doesn't bring any sandpaper and I dont think it fits Chytil's game either.
This season was never meant to be about contending rather it was about development, so from that perspective it absolutely is a dereliction of duty to allow the youngest team in the NHL to not have any intimidating presence in the lineup.
It would be foolish to expect anyone to prove a negative so this claim that deference is a myth because incidents around the league still occur is blissful in many regards. In addition, it's not always about deference rather there is a mindset built when a locker room knows that any liberties taken against them will be met with a pound of flesh taken in retribution. There's a reason why current and former players almost uniformly speak of the extra space and confidence they get when they know they have physical support behind them.

I think so, too. Like I said earlier, Drury was supposedly the driving force behind hiring Quinn.
John Davidson gets canned after a year for underachievement. Meanwhile, the guy who ran the team for 20 years and managed one losing Finals appearance in that time is still advising the team.
Slash his fucking ankle like Bobby Clarke on Valery Kharmalov in 1972. That would actually get his attention.
It meant a lot to his teammates and it would have meant more if it happened Tuesday night. The ref jumped in an spared Smith some punishment, but it's the message and it matters (IMO)
Lavy has to own some of this too though, he could have held Wilson out (not to avoid this, but because he disapproved of Wilson's actions - I brought up previously when Julien sat Marchand after a low-bridge major)
but 1 fight last game would have been more impressive. You stand up for the guy next shift, not the next game after a couple days of being called soft and being told you should stand up for your teammate.

RE: Miller is too big to not be throwing the body around more
Miller? How about fucking Gauthier? He's built like a tank, he's the nephew of Ray Rougeau, both his father and grandfather were professional wrestlers.
Gauthier is actually 30 pounds heavier than Wilson.
But I know Gauthier went to the back with a knee injury.

coming years, which I fully expect them to, it'll be based on the foundation that Gorton built. It would actually be the second time that's happened to Gorton, which sucks for him. I've been critical of Gorton in the past. The Tampa Bay trade was a disaster. Extending Kreider and DeAngelo was awful. Signing Shattenkirk was a mistake. Smith hasn't played up to his contract. Signing Jack Johnson was completely unnecessary. And yes, he lucked into Kakko and Lafreniere. No two ways about that. But he's done some good things as well and I think he deserved an extra year, because the team is so well-built to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
The terrifying thing for me is Dolan's NEED to make the playoffs. We all want that, but let's put things in perspective: we were the youngest/second-youngest team in the entire NHL and we probably would've made the playoffs if we were in any other division...Combine that with all the distractions this team has had AND Quinn constantly juggling the lines and making questionable personnel decisions and all in all, it wasn't a bad season.
We're very close to being a perennial playoff team as it stands right now. The worst..the absolute worst thing thing would be if we started trading some of our top young players and prospects. Laf, Kakko, Fox, K'Andre, Igor, Kravtsov, Lundkvist (at least how he's performed in the SHL)...they all need to stay because they've proven to be building blocks. If Dolan thinks that forcing a trade for Jack Eichel (which would likely mean giving up one or two of the aforementioned players) coming off of neck surgery is some sort of golden bullet, he is sorely mistaken. It would actually be reminiscent of the Carmelo Anthony trade or the many, many Rangers trades of yesteryear. The only difference would be that instead of trading for an injured player past his prime (Lindros, Bure, etc.), we'd be trading for a young injured player and we'd be giving up prime assets in the process.
There will be trading of young players. I think that's a given. I mean the left-side of the defense is packed with young players and prospects. Guys like Tarmo Reunanen, Zac Jones, Matthew Robertson, Libor Hajek, Ryan Lindgren, K'Andre Miller...there's simply a glut of promising young LDs, so yeah, they should trade a LD or two and upgrade their roster. But you cannot trade the blue chippers. The blue chippers need to be off-limits.

sure looks like it
As well, it is believed that the hockey hierarchy’s collection of skill players at the expense of will players did not sit well with Dolan. The recent mismatches against the Islanders highlighted the team’s deficiencies in grit and leadership and may have accelerated, if not prompted, this stunning decision.

I'm not in love with Gorton/Davidson (they've done a lot of good, some bad) but it is absolutely horrifying that Dolan is pushing his views on management.
just to be clear, a prediction not saying it is being reported
Sounds like the opposite
Dolan is done screwing up the Knicks and has turn his sights on the Rangers

Like many of you, I assume this had to do with the events of the past 48 hours. I don’t believe Davidson/Gorton had anything to do with last night’s NYR statement; it was Dolan-driven....(1/2)

However, there is word Dolan was unhappy with this NYR season and wanted to make a change. Seems crazy to me, because they have a come a long, long way in two years...but he’s the owner.

There is causation, not correlation. They got big contracts because Dolan loved them. It's part of what makes him a bad owner, too many emotional decisions.

#2 pick prior year
Elite and emerging talent in Fox
Panarin
Mika
Buch is clearly getting better
Miller has flashed as a rookie
Kravy has looked excellent at times as a "rookie"
Shesterkin can be elite again
Other players like Chytil, Kaako, Strome, Blackwell and others have played well with plenty of room to grow
They have a young, talented team with tons of potential not limited to just the playoffs - they'll contend for a cup for years with the right coach
There is a TON of good on the ice. Just leads me to believe this is a tantrum thrown by Dolan and has nothing to do with hockey.

not necessarily. they have a team of stylists, east-west guys who like to make pretty plays and not get dirty. too many of the same types.
Don't think it's fair to lump anyone in with Jackson's tenure here in NY. JAckson didn't care or basically went full heel while GM here in NY. MEssier might be or might not be in over his head, but I don't think it's fair to assume he would be THAT bad and unprofessional.
But this is certainly weird.
a)Goons don't actually deter or protect anyone. They also don't really exist anymore.
b)It was a power play - what enforcer type was going to be on the ice to "protect" Panarin?
c)The three toughest guys on the team - Trouba, Lindgren, and Kreider - were all out.

good post Arnie. I'll never forget seeing Dale Rolfe get pummeled while the Rangers all watched.
he has been the owner of two of the most storied, and underachieving, franchises for most of his adult life
I any sane world, he would have been out on his ass decades ago
Trouba and Kreider obviously aren't enough. Lindgren is 6' 200 lbs. He has no fear but takes more of a beating than he gives.
Like I said the other day. The Rangers are going to have to be willing to lose the skills part of trades to win the pieces fit better parts of trades or they'll never win anything with this group.
The Islanders and the Caps exposed them completely.

Totally agree.
Greg. Spot on. Do you think Quinn is getting gone after the season?

+1. This goonery/grit stuff is way overblown. The Caps/Pens/Isles aren't winning because of grit. They're winning because they're incredibly talented and deep teams with playoff experience and a blend of young talent and vets.
Scoring wins games. Not slow skating Neanderthals.
Exactly what I said above. Quinn isn't going anywhere if Drury is the boss.

Yeah this all comes off like high school tough guy talk. Boston has tough guys and Wilson took liberties with them anyway last month, got suspended.
Now we're honestly back to sandpaper and grit talk. F*cking Tanner Glass bs all over again.
Exactly.
Neither are the Rangers. Laf is 6'2". Kreider is 6'3". Chytil is 6'2". Kakko is 6'3". Zibanejad is 6'2". Kravstov is 6'3".
The issue isn't size. It's youth.

No one's talking about the team, tonight or going forward: kids' heads must be absolutely spinning. Shitty.

The terrifying thing for me is Dolan's NEED to make the playoffs.
