this is a guy who owns (inherited) two of the most prized sports teams in America and gets so bent out of shape if someone has a sign or shirt mocking him. Could you imagine being that fortunate in life and being that thin-skinned at the same time. That is the problem with him, he can't stand dissension.
Ballsy move. I think this whole Caps thing is an organizational embarrassment from the players on the ice to the coaching staff to the front office. Total pacifism on the ice, and the whiny bitch letter to the league following just awful looks. And this all on top of a season where the beat up on bad teams and get clobbered by good teams, like losing 9-0 over 2 games to the Islanders with the playoffs on the line.
Is scheduled to be on the MKS at 4. He was booked before the announcement. It will be interesting if he cancels, which could mean he is in the mix for front office position?
IF this was performance based it would have happened after these last 3 games. This is too big of a coincidence that it occurred after the statement that it's not somehow related. Dolan doesn't stand for those that cross him.
this line from Brooks' column is it in a nutshell:
"The recent mismatches against the Islanders highlighted the team’s deficiencies in grit and leadership and may have accelerated, if not prompted, this stunning decision"
you can't have a hockey team full of conscientious objectors.
Dolan absolutely LOVES Allan Houston and Chris Drury when in fact they were given two of the worst contracts in the history of their respective sports. I mean both vastly underachieved (in Houston's case it was mostly injuries, but the 7-year, 100M deal was just an albatross on the neck of the Knicks).
Of course that doesn't have anything to do with their business and personnel intellect, but it's just weird.
RE: Not for nothing, but I always found it somewhat ironic that

There is causation, not correlation. They got big contracts because Dolan loved them. It's part of what makes him a bad owner, too many emotional decisions.
Starts off by winning the first overall pick for the first time ever. Hey, maybe things will be all right!
But then...
K'Andre's racial slur thing
Zibanejad's COVID situation
Panarin leaving the team because of Putin goons
Tony DeAngelo and that debacle, along with the rumors afterwards
Tom Wilson
The statement yesterday
Firing of Gorton and JD
Well, it's a fitting end in many ways...Weird as alllllll shit.
I'm not in love with Gorton/Davidson (they've done a lot of good, some bad) but it is absolutely horrifying that Dolan is pushing his views on management.
100% agreed. Whatever the faults of the JD/Gorton team, Dolan taking a more prominent role is terrifying.

Man, when you step back and think about all that, you're spot on. For a team on the rise in many ways, some really weird juju
I love Mess the player. He'll always have a special place in my heart......but I have absolutely no desire to see him in a key role in the organization.
The hot rumor seems to be that Dolan was intent on firing Gorton, JD opposed it, so he decided to fire both of them. It happened early because Dolan was annoyed that they put the word out around the league that they had nothing to do with the statement issued yesterday, but it was going to happen regardless.

Don't forget Barry Beck calling out JD and the Rangers over not supporting Mark Pavelich prior to his death
making basketball or hockey decisions, BUT: the performance of this team the last month shows that they are seriously lacking in toughness and leadership. Beating up the Devils and Sabres then figure skating around the perimeter for 2 nights without a goal against the Islanders showed what they are. The total wimp out against the Caps was the exclamation point.
RE: Playing the part of Phil Jackson....Mark Messier!
I love Mess the player. He'll always have a special place in my heart......but I have absolutely no desire to see him in a key role in the organization.
Yup agreed. He commands respect around the league and everyone would take his call, but how ready would he be for handling all parts of the org, including player development, cap management, etc?

I'm not sure I agree. Messier seems like a guy throws himself completely into anything he does and learns everything about it. And he can hire a capologist.

If he gets the nod, would love to see you be right.
I’ll concede, as a Knicks fan, I’m eternally scarred by Dolan’s decisions, that’s why I’m feeling down about this,
You’re posts about the Rangers being cream puffs against the Isles, Bruins, Caps this year aren’t wrong
RE: The Rangers were the youngest team in hockey prior to the Devils'
fire sale - how have they "underachieved? No one really expected them to make the playoffs this year.
I think there is a difference between underachieving and not competing. Not competing is far worse. They did not compete in those 2 games at the Mausoleum, and they tend not to against the tough teams.

The other thing re Messier is good/bad: he also seems like he wouldn't take shit from anyone, including Dolan, which could make it a short tenure, more instability.

Rick is obviously unaware of what Dolan's done with the New York Knickerbockers, to make that statement. The firings of JD and Gorton don't even make the top 5 bat shit list for James Dolan!!

That's coaching, not roster construction, though.
not necessarily. they have a team of stylists, east-west guys who like to make pretty plays and not get dirty. too many of the same types.
The only time I've ever been that sickened watching a Ranger game
was exactly 47 years ago today. Game 7 of the Stanley Cup semifinals. If you're a Ranger fan of any age you know what happened. If you're my age and you saw it, it will never leave you.
All these years later it happened again Monday night. At least this time the elite skills players on the ice didn't just watch. The excuse then was that they would have been 3rd man in and thrown out of the game. History has shown in 1974 they lost the fight and game and made the wrong call. In 2021 they got humiliated and injured.
It doesn't surprise me in the least that Dolan fired people over his team being humiliated on the ice. In my opinion Gorton deserves to go for not having anyone on his team to protect his star players.
As a 50+ NYR fan I'll always love JD and I hate he got caught in a Dolan shit storm. If this somehow saves Quinn's job that will suck even more.
but, FWIW, he says a "source close to the Rangers" doesn't believe the "performance" spin, mainly because JD hasn't been back with the Rangers for very long at all.
RE: Playing the part of Phil Jackson....Mark Messier!

Don't think it's fair to lump anyone in with Jackson's tenure here in NY. JAckson didn't care or basically went full heel while GM here in NY. MEssier might be or might not be in over his head, but I don't think it's fair to assume he would be THAT bad and unprofessional.
But this is certainly weird.
RE: The only time I've ever been that sickened watching a Ranger game

a)Goons don't actually deter or protect anyone. They also don't really exist anymore.
b)It was a power play - what enforcer type was going to be on the ice to "protect" Panarin?
c)The three toughest guys on the team - Trouba, Lindgren, and Kreider - were all out.

good post Arnie. I'll never forget seeing Dale Rolfe get pummeled while the Rangers all watched.
What a mess.
I think it becomes somewhat more likely. Drury was apparently the driving force to bring in Quinn. Drury and Quinn are good ol' Boston boys.
cannot agree more
Please don't do this to me.

Man, when you step back and think about all that, you're spot on. For a team on the rise in many ways, some really weird juju
#2 pick prior year
Elite and emerging talent in Fox
Panarin
Mika
Buch is clearly getting better
Miller has flashed as a rookie
Kravy has looked excellent at times as a "rookie"
Shesterkin can be elite again
Other players like Chytil, Kaako, Strome, Blackwell and others have played well with plenty of room to grow
They have a young, talented team with tons of potential not limited to just the playoffs - they'll contend for a cup for years with the right coach
There is a TON of good on the ice. Just leads me to believe this is a tantrum thrown by Dolan and has nothing to do with hockey.
