We know Toney is a sick athlete and joystick move ma. I I don’t know if Cordelle was similar when he entered the league Re being totally raw with how to run routes?
What’s interesting is the giants WR corps had the worst separation in the league this past year and Toney is a plant and separate guy.
Toney is a much more established WR at this point in his career, and I think many would feel he was a bust if he only became a return guy with the occasional gadget play like Patterson.
Toney is much more of a wide receiver than Patterson was coming out.
Patterson is more like Ross than Toney
Toney. Fast. Quick. Very good hands. Exceptional change of direction and burst.
Patterson only caught about 50% of the targets thrown his way at UT. Why? Because he was a very raw receiver without good hands. Just as has been the case in the NFL when he's played a traditional WR role extensively.
Patterson was the #2 receiver behind Justin Hunter the 1 year he played for TEN. I suppose there could be an argument made that Toney was #2 behind Pitts in the games he played, but numerically Toney ended the year with more targets and more receptions (albeit in more games). TEN did also have a pretty good TE that year as well who caught almost as many balls as Patterson (former Raider Mychal Rivera).
Patterson did not play his best against the good teams in the SEC as Toney did. Against Bama he was held to 1 catch. Against UGA he was held to 2 catches. In fact he only had one game with 100+ receiving yards in college, and it was a 200 yard game against Troy.
For those reasons and others Patterson was simply much more of a gamble on tools whereas Toney has put on tape some dominant performances vs. top tier competition.
