David Diehl discusses Shane Lemieux

This was from a couple of months ago, but it's a good discussion...

Film Room: Breaking Down Shane Lemieux's Rookie Season | New York Giants - ( New Window )
Hopefully An Off Season Of An NFL Level
Trainmaster : 5/7/2021 6:37 pm : link
Strength, conditioning and nutrition will make him stronger in 2021.

The running game
eric2425ny : 5/7/2021 7:22 pm : link
improved greatly when Lemieux came in at left guard. His pass pro needs work for sure.
Lemieux struggled in pass pro
mittenedman : 5/7/2021 7:59 pm : link
which is expected of a rookie, but I don't think he gets enough credit for how good he was in the run game. For a rookie to step on the field with no preseason and toss people around like that was very impressive. I'm bullish on him as the starting LG moving forward and hopeful Hernandez can develop at RG.

Totally agree. And if Hernandez doesn’t get it done on to the 2022 draft to replace him. Guards seem to acclimate faster to the NFL game than tackles.
Diehl is GOATed

5th round pick and the guy was asked to play like 4 different positions on OL. Didn’t miss a beat, just did his job and helped us win 2 Super Bowls. He spoiled us. Same with Snee and McKenzie
You

With all this talk of next year being a QB-draft for Big Blue if Jones doesn't prove himself, I think the same can be said for the OL. With two 1st rounders, two 3rd rounders, and two 4th rounders, the Giants are well positioned to solve any remaining OL issues. It's up to Peart, Hernandez, and LeMieux to convince the Giants to use those picks elsewhere. And it's up to Solder and Fulton to provide insurance should one or more of them fall flat on their face. All in all, it's a reasonable strategy. Promising young talent in make or break years with experienced veterans providing temporary insurance and plenty of draft capital to restock the OL as necessary in 2022.
We're counting on three 2nd year players
CT Charlie : 5/8/2021 12:35 am : link
and a 3rd year player on the O-line. Fans need to be patient. No one would expect too much from an NBA team so young, would they?

I agree. I thought when they drafted him they got a steal, especially for how long he lasted. The good news is, I think his pro should improve because it was more physical and coachable. He seemed to make the right decisions on who to pickup, which I think was a contributing factor in Thomas' improvement.

But, his run blocking? A huge improvement. It was not a coincidence that the run game picked up with him. He was simply more physical, quicker in his pulls, and he got to the 2nd level consistently.
Didn't expect much and still dont

The forever optimist is a skeptic here. Hes a small 300lb'er in the "over bulked up" way that Pugh and O hara were.
He did only 24 reps in the bench. He's going to be matched up with guys like Dak Lawrence who weigh 340 lb and do 36 in the bench and are better athletes to boot.
I don't see it, which means absolutely nothing, if he turns out to be good I'm going to find a way to tell everybody I knew it all the time
I think he's our starting guy at Left Guard
Jimmy Googs : 5/8/2021 8:09 am : link
to begin the 2021 season. If Peart can be Jonathan Ogden, then Lemieux can certainly be John Hannah.

I'm expecting Lemieux to surprise some people this season
Jay on the Island : 5/8/2021 9:53 am : link
With a full offseason he will show up stronger and better prepared this season combined with a years experience. I am confident that he will be at least a league average pass blocker with the chance to eventually be above average. Gates is obviously a long term answer and I am hopeful that Lemieux is as well.
Shane Lemieux is my guy

No debate at all....the LG position is his. He had a tremendous year for us and when he was inserting into the lineup, we then began to play much better offensive football and established the run most games.

Does he have things to improve on? Of course, everyone does, especially rookies. But what do you think he did all offseason? Duhhhhhhh...knowing him, he was doing everything he needed to do to improve this year. I HAVE NO DOUBT HE WILL I MPROVE TOO.

Don’t worry about our LG....if you have to worry, save it for our RG.
I sure hope that he’s much improved in Pass Pro this year......
Simms11 : 5/8/2021 10:16 am : link
DJ can ill afford to be getting pressure in his face. I do think that he will be average at best and that might be good enough this year on that side. I’m more concerned about Hernandez or Fulton on the right side. I think Hernandez has shown to be more athletic then Fulton and hope that he wins the right side battle. Fulton was absolutely horrendous last year. Between Rob Sale, Ben Wilkerson and Pat Flaherty, I really hope that they can get this line playing together and solidly from the get go. I see a good run blocking line coming together, however Pass Pro is currently a mystery and that will make or break DJs season. A season where he needs to show he can be that franchise guy.
Again
Jay on the Island : 5/8/2021 11:30 am : link
All the rookies around the NFL were just so far behind compared to previous years due to the pandemic. They missed so many on the field activities that are invaluable to a players development. The fact that these rookies not only played but also flashed is a great sign.

Now that they have a normal offseason of on the field activities they should improve noticeably. Lemieux's ceiling will depend on his pass protection. We already know that he is a good run blocker.
It’s not like his pass pro
Dave on the UWS : 5/8/2021 11:41 am : link
was bad every rep. Skinner covered that. He’s got things to learn and improve on. His grade was low because he had a number of major screw ups along the way. Other reps he recognized and his technique was sound. He should get much better.
Hernandez is another story. Precious coaches put him at LG because he played it in college. His skill set screamed RG to me. Finally he will be tried there. Somebody has a clue.

He actually seems to have the hard part down - picking up complicated stunts (see Diehl's video). We've had a bunch of OLs here in recent years who couldn't pick up a stunt .
I say it all the time
UConn4523 : 5/8/2021 11:52 am : link
but there’s mid rounders and UFA OLmen all over the league that are starting and playing well. Some of the best Giants lines I’ve seen in my lifetime were made, in part, of the same caliber of player.

There is no reason at all our guys can’t be coached up and get better.

Correct, The Patriots were constantly rotating in UDFA and late round picks and turning them into quality starters. Rich Seubert and Shaun O'Hara were UDFA's. Nick Gates was undrafted and also the best OL they had last season.
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 5/8/2021 12:33 pm : link
No idea what to make of OL; Gates looked good, Thomas came on, Peart showed flashes, Hernandez is ?, not sure of Lemieux. The coaching staff & FO has higher opinion of the OL than others so I'll defer to them because I have trust in Judge. If the OL can be good...man, this offense could take off.
He sucks in
cokeduplt : 5/8/2021 12:46 pm : link
Pass protection. Hopefully he can improve, but I’m don’t feel great about him being a handed a starting job.
Much more mobile and has more pop in his gamme than
chopperhatch : 5/8/2021 1:13 pm : link
Hernandez. Honestly I think we saw the best we're going to get out WH. He gets jammed up in backs' holes far too often.

I don't completely agree. His deficiency is getting overwhelmed in one on one matchups, which is a problem. But, it is a physical problem, which is coachable. But, in terms of the mental game, he seems to consistently pick up the right guy on stunts, twists, etc. So, I do expect him to improve.

I actually enjoy listening to him breakdown film, especially of the OL. He explains what's going on simply.
Hernandez biggest pass-pro issue to me…
STLGiant : 5/8/2021 1:34 pm : link
was his inability to pick up anyone on a DL stunt…he looked like a deer in the headlights.

I always thought that Rich Seubert would make a great OL coach someday.
