they're like both those dudes that give us that outside shooting lift late in the game. Without them who's going to fill that role? Bullock has to have a huge night. Rose likely will have to play a lot if we want to have a chance to beat the Suns. Payton was something like a combined -70 during our 12-1 streak lmao
Rose (-1.81) and Payton (-1.44) have similar +/- average per 100 possessions for the entire season.... although the reason that's bad for Payton is Rose was playing for the worst team in the Eastern Conference for more than half of the year lol. I can't seem to find average +/- since Rose joined the Knicks but I imagine it's something awesome based on what I've seen game by game.

with how easy the Celtics schedule is and how difficult ours is... Celtics could still very well go 3-1 the next 4 and have a chance to beat us in the regular season finale and finish ahead of us.
Only way we can stop that from happening (besides beating them obviously), is win 3 of our next 5. I don't like our chances of doing that w/ this schedule.

with his natural athleticism and skills, it's all a matter of attitude/character/work ethic, and by all accounts he strives every day to get better is constantly asking the vets questions.
Not sure if Rose can play the entire 2nd half though.
Frank is so bad. But then again Payton literally might as well be playing for the other team. His presence alone helps the Suns. Not sure what other choice we have.
But we really have to ride Rose and Taj hard in the 2nd half. They changed the game when they were in there. Sure we all see Rose, but suddenly we started playing D with Taj anchoring that end. Noel has no chance vs Ayton. Right now we have a chance to win this one so we have to go for it. Screw Sunday vs the Clippers.
for not letting this game turn into the Denver game. A lot of things that didn't go our way to start the game and looked like it'd be a repeat of Wednesday night. But you could see the urgency of Randle, ferociously running up and down the floor, imposing his will as captain to not let the team fall into a funk.
As some say: Basketball is a 1st quarter game-- often who wins the 1st quarter wins the game because it determines so much of the flow and strategy of the rest of the game. The fact the Knicks turned that 1st quarter around just in time was thanks to Rose and Randle. Love to see it.
Yep that last minute of the third turned the whole game around. Payne and C RT powder have destroyed us.RJ has been bad. 7 of 19 ain't gonna cut it vs the Suns. Way too many uncontested 3's
I disagree. That first quarter against DEN was the worth thing all season.
No, I can live with the occasional stinker where you don't show up. I can't stand throwing away a game where you lead at halftime and led for most of the 3rd quarter
relax a lot during a game when they get uo a little
it's completely reprehensible. I thought they'd grown out of that shit. How do you relax with a 9 point lead on the road against one of the best teams in the NBA? Completely insane their hubris sometimes.

We need a late outside shooting boost like the Suns just got. Now in the 4th quarter is about where we maybe could've gotten from either Burks or Quick. Without either of them, who's going to give us that possible hot hand ? No one left on the bench to do that. I knew as soon as I saw BOTH were out there was no way we were beating the Suns. Need to have offensive threats the entire game to draw from.
RE: Rose's second half should be mentioned with RJs
Absolute horrendous job of controlling the game. You cannot let Paul scream at our bench for 20 minutes straight. He needs to be whacked there. You're just asking for things to get out of hand when you let that slide
no lead is safe in this league because of how teams can shoot the 3 now. He literally said last week you can see a 10 point lead evaporate in 1 min, and that's like exactly what happened at the end of the 3rd. No matter how many times Thibs says you still seem to see let downs from this team once they get a lead. They seemed to do it less during their winning streak but the fact they still do it at all is inexplicable. You shouldn't have to tell your team that "no lead is safe." Look at the Suns-- they literally never let up effort regardless of if they're down 15 or up 15. Like I said they're basically a better version of what the Knicks are trying to be. Always high effort, detail-oriented, aggressive defense-first team.

You were the one who said "Team" so I was responding to that
all 3 home games, maybe riding a 4 game losing streak, have to get 1 of these next 2, 3-3 on this road trip is a win, 2-4 is not the end of the world but then will most likely need to win all 3
This isn't unexpected. Lose to the Nuggets and Cunts on the road. Don't be fooled. If the Knicks pull one game outta this west coast trip, it's a win. Somehow pull two and that's a Fucking huge win.
My main issue is with the officiating. Just horrible. I can't even believe these idiots have jobs and can sleep at night.
That said, the Knicks have had two big moments where they lost composure during the last two games. And that's why they're not ready to contend. It's ok though.
The needle is pointing up. Until Dolan trades Randle for Panerin. And that is a real possibility with this fuck ass MSG group of shit-eating toenail-chewing pube-flossing jizz swallowers.
It's just going to take 3 straight at home to lock down 4 or 5 seed.
This has been a great season and can't be judged on the last 2 losses.
Hopefully we can get one in LA.

We're definitely not beating the Clippers. I like our chances against the Lakers right now though.
between the Knicks and the rest of the league, and I'm talking about on both sides both the teams they're better than and the teams they're worse than. For instance: the Grizzlies are a solid tough team and the Knicks just completely out-played and out-classed them and showed why they're the better team at this point. But in my mind there are 7 or 8 teams that are the class of the NBA right now and are clearly better the Knicks and shows it every time they share a floor w/ them: Nets, Sixers, Bucks, Jazz, Suns, Clippers, Nuggets and then of course the Lakers WHEN they're fully healthy. Any other team besides those teams I believe the Knicks can are better than and THAT seems to show every time now-- but when the Knicks play w/ the big boys it just becomes very clear they're just not quite "there" yet.
If we get Quickley back and have a good game by our guys
considering that basically means the Knicks are just 1 tier below those elite teams. The question is what will it take to step up that 1 extra tier? It's the hardest tier to climb.
RE: If we get Quickley back and have a good game by our guys
adam-- I agree w/ that. When we have our entire team healthy we're able to give any team a game. We really need everyone healthy though -- not just our main guys but *almost* every role player as well -- and the problem is that's rarely the case in basketball (especially this season).
0:54 -- Booker and Kaminsky play pick and roll; Rose and Gibson both go for Booker, leaving 7 footer Kaminsky going to the hoop against 6'6" RJ, who is alone in the lane and has responsibility for Crowder to his outside. Most RJ could do in that situation is foul, which could have resulted in a 3 point play.
0:33 -- Payne comes up court marked by Rose; Payne and Kaminsky play pick and roll. This time Rose makes no effort to get above the screen, and Gibson stays back as well, leaving Payne all alone for his three pointer. RJ is marking Crowder, who also goes out beyond the three point line, where RJ could have followed and gone after Payne, but Payne was, again, not RJ's man.
0:09 -- Randle airballs a three pointer from the far corner. Booker gets the rebound and breaks, getting the step on RJ who is alongside him. As Booker approaches the lane, Bullock has square defensive position but plays statue as Booker blows by him for what looks like an easy layup. But the ball doesn't go in. RJ is caught flatfooted as Craig, the trailer, snags the rebound for the putback. Then RJ commits the turnover that results in another score.
All in all, not a great sequence for RJ, but the first two baskets were primarily the result of poorly defended pick and rolls by Rose and Gibson; the first being a mistake by Gibson and the second a mistake by Rose.
And Bullock gave a very poor D effort on the closing sequence.
about Rose is funny, because he's obviously not close to the MVP level player he was due to injury, and he's been in the NBA since 19 so it feels like he's been here forever, but he's only 32 years old.
I guess that's old in basketball years, but Damian Lillard is 30, Kyrie is 29, Harden is 31, and I feel like no one talks about them being on their last legs.
I bet Rose has 3+ quality years left, especially with his redeveloped game that is midrange focused.
He's basically a must re-sign at this point. I'd give him 3-30.
really have to start rose, Knicks would of been up 20 if they didnt get into a 13 point hole to start
I also agree. With all 3 the bench unit almost has too much scoring. Quickley, Burks, Rose all guys who excel with the ball in their hands, none great defenders.
and Berman never stops tweeting about it, but man it sucks to have whiffed with the Knox pick. Forget SGA, those other wings - Porter or either Bridges - would make such a difference right now.
But this lean athletic center just get destroyed every time we play a true big.
Taj is smallish but battled last night. Noel looked like a lightweight against a heavyweight on the boards

100%. Unless his ask is silly (he has done this before but he seems genuinely happy here). As much as I like Burks (and want to keep him too) Rose would be harder to replace IMHO.
-Other day spoke to a writer I've mentioned... legit buzz about the Knicks amongst the players. Players also view the Knicks core as "good dudes" and the kind of teammates a star would like to join. Doesn't mean that happens so soon but this isn't just "us" getting amped about the Knicks.
Rose is definitely top priority of the FA on the roster.
Burks would be nice too, but it has to be reasonable. I don’t want to get attached to guys like Bullock, Taj or Noel, and obviously Payton needs to go. We can replenish the roster with younger guys in the draft and FA.
To Dan’s point about players liking the Knicks core - I think Rose is a huge part of that going forward. He’s one of the most beloved players in the league.
trusts Payton over what we have had but... enough is enough. I'll lose my shit if he's back next season lol. I wouldn't even want him as depth. Move on.
The Elfrid thing...man, that deserves it's own 30 for 30. I just don't get it. This team looks like the '86 Celts or '96 Bulls when Rose is on the floor, Haha.
About Elf?
It's crazy to me that Thibs seam immune to it.
I understand the minutes piece last night but when the team in healthy Elf is a negative force out there.

Breen and Clyde routinely wax poetic about him during games. Like dont get me wrong, I see more value in his getting mins than most everybody here, but he is getting to the basket less and thats a problem for me.

And not finishing.
It's funny Rose comes in and RJ gets 2 clean looks from the corner.
Peyton doesn't penetrate and kick anymore.
It's straight to the rim with blinders on.
Agree w/ Dan; unless Rose's demands are UFB, we gotta do all we can to keep him here. He's invaluable. And I think he knows he's in a good situation so that should help.
Saving grace from last night...Blazers beat Lakers.
I'm actually rooting for the Lakers to win one before they have to face us. Reason being: one more win locks up the top 8 for them. i.e. they are very likely to have to play in the play-in, but one more win and they're assured to be either the 7 or the 8 and therefore would only need to win 1 of 2 games. My theory is: I cold see Davis and Lebron just saying "okay as long as we don't fall to the 9 or th 10, we'll just rest our bodies and prepare to play the play-in game(s)" because I think Lebron + AD would be comfortable only having to win 1 of 2. If they were threatened w/ the possibility of having to win 2 play-in games then they might feel some urgency to win some these last few games of the regular season.
Not a bad take; Lakers host Suns tomorrow. I don't believe LBJ will be suiting up either. & we all know, even if LAL fall into play in tourney, they'll be getting '02 WCF Game 6 4th quarter whistles in their favor, Haha.

Yep no question about the favorable whistles.
Yeah gonna be tough for them to beat the Suns. If they lose I wonder what Lebron's mindset will be for Tuesday -- I remember I got the impression LBJ will be back for the Knicks game, but who knows really, even he doesn't seem know really. I would hate to face a well-rested Lebron even if his ankle isn't exactly 100%-- the well-rested-ness might cancel that out lol. We absolutely NEED that game against the Lakers, because IMO there's just no way we're beating the Clippers.

Ugh, everything you said, encapsulates why this league is garbage. That said, I like watching the Knicks fight thr tide.
After finally getting back out there and re-injuring the ankle, part of me just feels like he's going to shut it down all the way until the play-in tournament (assuming they have to play the play-in). Even without Lebron there's only like a .01% chance they fall to the 9 or 10-- they'll most definitely be the 7 or 8 and I'm sure Lebron knows that. To fall to the 9 so much would have to happen-- it's just not happening now looking at it. So no point in him playing the final 4 games just to try to avoid a "win 1 of 2" play-in against mediocre teams. I'm sure he'd rather just save himself for the possible play-in.
Also hate that Hawks last 4 are @ home, granted 2 are against the Wiz. The other...Magic & Rockets. GTFO with that.
Yeah it's really unfair comparing schedules. On the brightside I have to imagine it's gonna be really hard to beat Westbrook/Beal twice in a row even if it is in Atlanta. So I think the Hawks finish 3-1. We just need to finish 3-2 and we're fine. 2-3 and things start to get dicey.

Thus imperative we get a split in LA before we head back to MSG. I'm not worried about the Spurs, Hornets, or Cs-though any given night obviously-but I'll sleep much better if we get 1 in LA.
I don't think Lebron is healthy and he doesn't bounce back like he use too. He is 36 and has played a crazy amount of minutes.
AD can not carry them, he needs another piece especially in the west.
Their final schedule is easy but they have been playing horrible 2-8 over the last 10.
Suns, Knicks, Rockets, Pacers, and N.O.
Indiana and NO on the road.
Blazers schedule is brutal.
Spurs, rockets, Jazz, Suns, and Nuggets.

Agreed-- split the LA games 1-1, and then there's no way we're going 1-2 or 0-3 in the final 3. We're winning at least 2 of those final 3. Regardless of what happens in LA they have to shake off that long road trip quick and return to MSG form. They've played great at home this year and those final 3 opponents are the definition of mediocrity.
From your lips to God's ear. I think if LBJ & AD were both 100%, the Lakers are probably the Western Conference favorites, but I tend to agree: I don't they will be. And as you mentioned, LBJ is 36. He even said the other day-cryptically I might add-that he probably will never be 100% again.
If not Lakers...Suns? Clips? I don't buy the Jazz. I would have said Denver if not for Murray's injury, though Porter Jr. is coming on.
Outside of Knicks & Hornets-for local reasons-I've probably caught more of the Celts than any other team in the league because I'm in a group text chain with cousins from NH who are big Cs fan. Man, that team is a mess. Also, they're incredibly soft. One of my cousins sent a Bill Simmons tweet this morning where he said Boston's destiny is to fall to 7 & lose both play in games, Haha.

This season is different because of covid.
Lakers have played a lot of games and you can hear Lebron's frustration.
I think he is really hurting and knows he can't go 100%.
I think it is the Suns and Clippers year in the west.
PG is playing really well and Kawhi know how to turn it on in the playoffs.
Unless Lebron comes back fully healthy.
It's going to be a tough run for the Lakers.

haha that's funny-- I hate that team. Agreed they're soft af. Everyone saying "well Celtics always show up for the playoffs"-- on the one hand I can understand that concern just based on the type of players Tatum and Brown are (they play hard when they feel like it and when they do they're pretty good), but I just don't see this as being quite the same team as the team that went to the ECF 3 of 4 years. They seem to be too much in disarray at times (as Clyde would say), I don't see them suddenly showing up and playing crisp team-first basketball all of a sudden once the playoffs start.
I read an article yesterday about how this is not even a true Brad Stevens -type team (I hate Brad Stevens for the record but admit he's a decent coach)... I guess he has a list of 5 "keys" that he's always harped on and has written everywhere in the facility and those 5 things are literally the things these Celtics are the worst at lol.

Yeah damn imagine if the Lakers are the 7-seed, they could very well have to play:
-Warriors (in a play-in game)
And then 3 rounds in the playoffs they'd likely play (in order):
-Suns
-Clippers
-Jazz/Nuggets
No way Lebron/AD make it through the west in the condition they're in right now.

Going to need him to play 35 minutes tonight
We need an MVP performance from both RJ and Randle. Oh well.
You can give me stats all day.
The eye test tells me all I need to know.
Hope Maimi beats them twice.
Miami needs to lose to the 76ers and Bucks.
Perfect storm.
Only way we can stop that from happening (besides beating them obviously), is win 3 of our next 5. I don't like our chances of doing that w/ this schedule.

Yeah I believe turned his ankle in the final minute of the Denver game.
Yeah ankle injury
he's out
- Clyde
Agreed I fucking hate that shit. Should not be allowed.
I think Tom has done a nice job finding the lineup(s) and the role that fits Toppin best. He's starting to come into his own for sure.
Not sure if Rose can play the entire 2nd half though.

pretty sure I've never seen Payton make a single jump shot

He made poor decisions, including some of the worst shots he’s attempted since he was traded here.
But pretty much everyone sucked since the final minutes of the third.

Rjs defense tonight was terrible and thrn he compounded the issue by forcing up terrible shot after terrible shot

And yes, RJ played bad defense for 5 minutes and made an inexcusable pass. That's not why we lost.

The suns proceeded to score on every Rj fuck up and took a 2 point lead to start the 4th, then he gave up another 3 to start the 4th..
Rjs defense tonight was terrible and thrn he compounded the issue by forcing up terrible shot after terrible shot
One of those was a Bullock fuck up.

It completely killed the momentum the Knicks had, you finish that quarter strong and your uo 10 or more

SO RJ single handedly caused a 12 point swing minimally? Bullshit dude.

it's completely reprehensible. I thought they'd grown out of that shit. How do you relax with a 9 point lead on the road against one of the best teams in the NBA? Completely insane their hubris sometimes.
it was 1 player
You were the one who said "Team" so I was responding to that
Agreed. RJ made his mistakes. But Thibs was outcoached tonight.
This has been a great season and can't be judged on the last 2 losses.
Hopefully we can get one in LA.

We're definitely not beating the Clippers. I like our chances against the Lakers right now though.
adam-- I agree w/ that.
And Bullock gave a very poor D effort on the closing sequence.
the bad and the ugly (no good) - ( New Window )
I guess that's old in basketball years, but Damian Lillard is 30, Kyrie is 29, Harden is 31, and I feel like no one talks about them being on their last legs.
I bet Rose has 3+ quality years left, especially with his redeveloped game that is midrange focused.
He's basically a must re-sign at this point. I'd give him 3-30.
I also agree. With all 3 the bench unit almost has too much scoring. Quickley, Burks, Rose all guys who excel with the ball in their hands, none great defenders.
Cutting out Elf brings the rotation to 9:
Rose-Bullock-RJ-Randle-Noel
Taj
Obi
Burks
Quickley
Taj is smallish but battled last night. Noel looked like a lightweight against a heavyweight on the boards

100%. Unless his ask is silly (he has done this before but he seems genuinely happy here). As much as I like Burks (and want to keep him too) Rose would be harder to replace IMHO.
-Other day spoke to a writer I've mentioned... legit buzz about the Knicks amongst the players. Players also view the Knicks core as "good dudes" and the kind of teammates a star would like to join. Doesn't mean that happens so soon but this isn't just "us" getting amped about the Knicks.
To Dan’s point about players liking the Knicks core - I think Rose is a huge part of that going forward. He’s one of the most beloved players in the league.
Whatever. Beat the Clips tomorrow.
It's crazy to me that Thibs seam immune to it.
I understand the minutes piece last night but when the team in healthy Elf is a negative force out there.

Negative force? Sometimes I think the other team is giving him a duffle bag full of Benjamins before tipoff, Haha.

They’ve asked Thibs about it and his answer is always rambling on about defense and leadership

Huge 2 game set between Celts & Heat beginning tomorrow in Boston.
Quote:
Not a bad take; Lakers host Suns tomorrow. I don't believe LBJ will be suiting up either. & we all know, even if LAL fall into play in tourney, they'll be getting '02 WCF Game 6 4th quarter whistles in their favor, Haha.

Ugh, everything you said, encapsulates why this league is garbage. That said, I like watching the Knicks fight thr tide.
Quote:
Also hate that Hawks last 4 are @ home, granted 2 are against the Wiz. The other...Magic & Rockets. GTFO with that.

Thus imperative we get a split in LA before we head back to MSG. I'm not worried about the Spurs, Hornets, or Cs-though any given night obviously-but I'll sleep much better if we get 1 in LA.

If not Lakers...Suns? Clips? I don't buy the Jazz. I would have said Denver if not for Murray's injury, though Porter Jr. is coming on.
This team has struggled with big physical centers and PF lately.
Playoff are a big accomplishment this season and I am happy to be watching important basketball at the end of a season.

That's a murder's row for Lakers.
ugh-- hate the possibility that Beal might not be available for the Hawks games. Need the Wizards to win at least one of those 2.

Seemed like cramps. He stayed on the bench and the trainers weren't with him.
