Last night was a quiet evening and we were eating at the local steak house and the waiter comes over and says that they have Tomahawk steak as a special that night.
Hummm. Had that several times in the past, great presentation and tasty. Somewhat expensive, but not wallet breaking so we order it.
As advertised, delicious and impressive to look at. I expect the price to be somewhat north of the most expensive steak on the menu (which was $69). Figured give or take $90.
Turns out it was in the Great White North of that.
$150.
Good news is that the waiter waved the $20 corkage fee (we brought our own wine).
Our fault for not asking the price ahead of time, but if you have to ask, you can't afford it.
Lesson learned.
Image above for illustrative purposes.
May have to check it out
Still haven’t been to Peter Lugers in my
Will be in NY next week but family in Hudson valley, not Brooklyn
So me and wife are doing terrapin in Rhine beck ( an old favorite of ours)
Maybe Santa Fe in tivoli (oaxacan tacos are great there)
Mmmm. Getting h7ngry!
Finally driving up to Santa Fe for a few days at the end of Sept. Mostly going to stick to Mex/SW restaurants. Made a reservation yesterday at Sazon, the top rated restaurant in town on TripAdvisor. Happens to be Mexican.
*Side note: I dont think I believe that the price of a 32 oz rib eye was $150. Thats $50 per ounce and insane.

Lighten up, Googs. It's only off by a zero, which is nothing :)
And the abuse from the waiter is free :)

I would guess that if a waitperson neglects to give a price or is deceptive about pricing, that comes from the top. The second time something like that was mentioned to the boss in a pricey eatery, if it was against company policy, the waiter would be gone.
Never ever ever ever ever ever. That is never the case. Ever. The last thing mgmnt wants to deal with is an irate check payer over a top end item. Not just the scene they cause, but comping shit and enticing them back with gift cards all goes on the books. Managers dont want to get read the riot act by ownership about comps. Comps and voids are like blowfish toxin to mgmt. Those numbers lead to summary firings by owners who dont know what they are doing. Manager has too many of these, they lose their job. Happens constantly. If a manager fired the waiter, its like an execution stay for him. That industry is brutal on the mind as well as the body.
Like Ive said, the only time I wouldnt give prices is if I was asked not to by the guest or supervisor. I would use my judgement with regulars. I think that has only backfired once in my entire time doing the job when all six guests got a lobster tail supplement ($40) and the guy knew the owner. The owner was annoyed that I didnt tell him what they were ordering so he could give them a break, but knowing his history, he hated giving breaks on food. I got scolded a bit, but at the end of the day, the owner needs to say, "hey let me see their order before you put it in." There have also been times when I have gone to ownership to dbl check that he wanted to charge a friend or relative in full, owner scoffs and says "of course" and that I was bothering him, only to have the friend or relative bitch about the bill afterwards. Of course the owwner then wont go near the table. Im truly damned if I do,damned if I dont. Kinda just have to do the necessaries and reciting the price of $150 special is necessary.

Going simple and basic tonight- sous vide/seared burgers, nothing but S&P, mushrooms and onions with a splash of Woosty, and double fried french fries in the air fryer. But I'm eating 3 hours earlier than you- that's what old people do :)

You don't even have to be drinking for something like that. No harm, no foul :) Though I was going to correct it until I saw Jimmy's comment, lol.

hey, if I went to some of those steakhouses, all I could afford after that would be cheap whiskey :)
Awful display of stupid.....

So my wife said that if she thought of my fries a potato chips, they were really good. But all the complaints I hear about fries is that they aren't crisp enough, so I'll live with that. Bottom line, none are left over

Literally called a fraud by at least 65% of the board, and still shows himself. Thats nerve for you. Despite the fact that nobody has ever laid eyes on your fat ass.

We eat late, especially on weekends when weather gets nicer. Old is state of mind!
Crab cakes came out good. Pan seared and finished under broiler. Hardly had any of pasta as I made the patties pretty big. Bottle of Pinot from Willamette Valley. Solid...

You're far from stupid. But we all have our moments, no? Having a particularly sad mother's day eve here in beautiful upstate NY. Hope you're enjoying your Saturday night, my friend.

When I go to a work "dinner" and I hear the organizer say "we're just going to get a bunch of apps" - fuck that, I find a way to see each person there for about a second - maybe guzzle a couple high end bourbons or a couple titos and it's Irish good bye for me
Tapas food is good and last time I went the restaurant had a set up where each person picked two apps and one heavier dish (i won't call it a main course - maybe there is a tapas term for it) - all to be shared.
but a) I'm not a food sharer - even with my wife - keep your fingers away from my plate and b) I just don't get full -
same thing is true about sushi (for me).
First time I tried sushi was in Australia and we sat at kind of like a bar and this conveyor belt went around the bar with different sushi options. when you saw one you wanted you grabbed the plate off the conveyor belt and ate the sushi. each color plate was a different dollar amount. I was with a colleague from work (a few of us actually) and she was explaining what each thing was. I tried almost everything except oonagi (sp?) - and maybe I eventually ate that and I kept eating the ones I liked and my plates stacked up (and then were cleared and I kept getting more), and when you're done some guy comes over looks at all your empty plates and your paperwork for how many plates you had and gives you a bill. I owed like $175 (they were like $5, $8, and $10 sushi items. I asked is that really how much sushi costs? and my colleague said "I've never seen anyone eat that much" lol
It's not everything that has that effect on me - I eat a 12 oz steak and a salad I'm full. A bowl/plate of pasta and a salad I'm full. a sandwich and an apple I'm full, but for some reason appetizers/sushi/tapas make we want to eat more.
Keep in mind these restaurants have basically been shut down for a long time now. Not saying it’s right but they’re trying to recoup lost earnings.

Ate in San Diego. Most items were 35 to maybe 65 on the menu. Server offers Tomahawk steak special with no price. When she returned I asked her...$185. lol!!

Maybe, but it predates Covid. I've often had to ask for the price of specials, going way back.

That shouldnt matter because they shouldnt be serving bug boy steaks if theyre struggling with COVID!!!
Have a filet and then have two of a strip, rib eye or porterhouse on the menu to go along with a pork chop set up and then a chicken dish and two fish. Dont sing the bluea about COVID because nobody is buying gargantuan bone in, fatty steaks.
Im all about succumbing to excess but come the fuck on! Get a nice piece of "anything else."
pj, Im with ya bud. I get hissy when people get all grousey about ordering a meal on the company dime. Lets not come off like a bunch of dime store skanks. Lets have a good time like professionals. If we have to hang out together, lets have a great meal and make some deals. Lol. Im probably TOO ready for this life.
So you're saying I got a deal!
Who knew?

Well, there's not much I can offer as far as solace. When my parents go I dont know what I am going to do. Really I dont. I will probably go on a bender which would be the last thing they would want. I lost an immediate family member when I was quite young and blocked it out. Without asking Im going to guess you too dealt with sudden loss.
The only thing I can offer is that I gor one, and assuredly others love having your contribution to our lives (no matter how distant) and that because of that, you willalways have a friend when you need one. Maybe not your Mom, but if she raised someone who affects people's lives as positively as you do, she must be a stunning spirit who will always be with you whether it's immediately apparent or not.
So much love to you B. Muah.
I can probably make that happen, ya fuckstain.

Lastly that price us still exceptionally high for a 32 oz Tommy. We sold 48 oz tommies for I think 110 at Mulherins in Philly. That was also a prime cut.
Ah, Mulherins. I could gorge myself through a good weekend in Fishtown!

Again, as I pointed out with bone. The post cooked weight in ounces is only very slightly affected by the removal of the bone and cooking it. I would say, all told, it was about 3-4 ounces. So a 28 oz steak.

The food there was fucking top notch. Not an easy place to work by any means and the food took a bit of a dive when the Chef got removed for harassment, but that place was SEXY.

Mulherin's is the boarding house of choice for Mrs. Dunk and myself whenever we take a ride down the turnpike to get some of Joe B's pizza.
I could spend a while in Fishtown if it weren't for all the troglodytes spelling a bird species repeatedly.
You try cooking a dry-aged choice tomahawk steak or porterhouse at home with sides of creamed spinach, lobster mac, mashed potatoes, et al and let us know how much that runs you. Then let us know whether you were able to cook to whatever your choice of temp is. Then let us know what your overhead is on rent and staff.
Agree. I always overorder apps/sides and have steak leftover.
I took the Mrs. out to a steakhouse yesterday for a belated Mother's Day. Spent $250 for 2 on apps/porterhouse/drinks/desserts. Have leftovers for today.
No complaints. Steakhouses are an event. Not every day.
