NFT: Dbags at Mets Game 2. Hunter.

ZGiants98 : 5/8/2021 5:42 pm

Hunter is the opener (hate it) likely followed by Luchessi.
Good news, deGrom is starting tomorrow.
Bad news, Carrasco clearly had a setback with his hamstring and they are now " backing off" on a return date.
Syndergaard and Lugo starting rehab assignments soon.
No update on Nimmo, Davis, or LG.

LGFM!
Dont know why pic didnt come through

Yeah, good thing JDG is going tomorrow
KDavies : 5/8/2021 6:07 pm : link
And they are off Monday and Thursday I believe. Yesterday was basically a bullpen game with Peterson getting knocked out early. Bullpen will be spent after these two days
Rojas/Hefner have seemed to balance pen workloads pretty well
Eric on Li : 5/8/2021 6:21 pm : link
Diaz is probably out for today having pitched 2 in a row but Familia hasn't pitched in a few days, May got a day off yesterday, Barnes/Castro/Loup would be on 2 days in a row and should be available.

So if they sit Diaz, you should have him.
With a day off Monday you probably also have Familia and May tomorrow (unless either throws 2+ innings today).
You'd probably have 1 or 2 of Barnes/Castro/Loup.

And if things go south Hunter/Luchesi/Hildenberger/Barnes just need to eat as many as possible to go into tomorrow near full strength.
McCann, Lindor, and Dom have been bottomless

pitts in our lineup. Praying ONE of them wakes up for real and goes on a tear. Unfortunately, Lindor's HR last night wasn't enough to convince me.

Conforto and Alonso are hitting now and at least McNeil is back to league average. They need more help though.
I've had a sinking feeling

That Carrasco is going to eventually need surgery. I really hope not.

Francisco Lindor’s 2nd career hr for the Mets.

He passed (among others) Bartolo Colon on the club’s all-time home run list

For a hamstring? I seriously doubt it. But he clearly pushed it and tweaked something again IMO.
Nice play

Scooter!
That was a terrible call at first base.

Come on umps, do better. That wasn't even close.
Alonso is seriously not a bad

defensive 1B.

He's fine.

lindor seems to be coming out of the funk slowly. 3 for his last 6 with 4 walks

McNeil HR!
Heads up running by Lindor
jpkmets : 5/8/2021 8:27 pm : link
And some outstanding defense. Lucchesi looks a lot better tonight backing up the opener. Be a great night for him to add runs and have him go deep and have all bullpen hands on deck tomorrow
Pillar has been a hell of a pickup
jpkmets : 5/8/2021 8:31 pm : link
Bench is the best it’s been since late 2015.

Smith needs a day off tomorrow. He looks absolutely lost right now.
I’d like to see Nido get more laying time
Vanzetti : 5/8/2021 8:42 pm : link
Looks much different at the plate with his new swing

And I think his defense is about the same as McCanns
Don’t look now
KDavies : 5/8/2021 8:59 pm : link
.....
Well
KDavies : 5/8/2021 9:01 pm : link
There goes the no-hitter.
Alonso
jpkmets : 5/8/2021 9:05 pm : link
Looked like he was thinking about his last AB or something on that throw to first. Can’t do that, man.
Familia having a nice season so far
KDavies : 5/8/2021 9:16 pm : link
That’s been huge
Very nice work by
jpkmets : 5/8/2021 9:20 pm : link
Familia to stop that.

May I would assume is the closer tonight wit Castro, Loup available for the 7th and 8th?

Diaz never goes 3 in a row, and we did use nearly the whole pen last night.

Hope we can get a couple of more runs.
Maybe McCann can swing here
jpkmets : 5/8/2021 9:25 pm : link
instead of watching strikes go by and complain.
That was a good, decisive
jpkmets : 5/8/2021 9:35 pm : link
Play by Alonso on LoCastro.
I can't think of another guy with a sub 1 era with so much bad luck
Eric on Li : 5/8/2021 9:43 pm : link
I don't even think rojas made contact on the foul tip that should have been the end of the inning.
that's a hell of an effort from a RP in a regular season game
Eric on Li : 5/8/2021 9:52 pm : link
struck out 2 with an inherited RISP.
bases loaded thanks to 2 infield singles and short bloop and gets out of it (twice) after throwing almost 40 pitches mostly high leverage through the middle of their order.
Alonso mussed that pickoff attempt
allstarjim : 5/8/2021 9:57 pm : link
But overall, he's been playing a great first base all year. Really has blossomed into a fine glove over there.
Great game
jpkmets : 5/8/2021 10:43 pm : link
Hunter and Lucchesi were excellent as was Familia. Great base running on the SB by Lindor and McNeil. McNeil and Lindor driving the offense is a nice touch after last night.

Just an overall nice win for 4 in a row.

Really hoping the offense busts out for Jake tomorrow for the sweep before the off day !

Amen. Hoping to get off work and see Harvey on Wednesday. That will be a game I don’t want to miss!
Bullpen has been excellent all year.
BigBlueNH : 5/8/2021 10:48 pm : link
Doesn't Rojas deserve some credit for that? I've read some folks calling for him to be canned. From what I can see, he's generally making good decisions, hasn't had head-scratching calls costing us games. If guys had been hitting, we'd have a much better record. And that's with 3 of our best pitchers out all year, and a few of our regulars out for extended periods.

I’m sure I called for the ax. Mostly that was me being over-emotional (shocker, I know) during two weeks of slogging baseball. I’m sure that was more attributable to 8 postponements in the first 20 scheduled games than to anything Rojas has or hasn’t done.

That being said, I really haven’t seen anything I particularly like about Rojas (except when he exploited the extra innings rule to get Lindor as the free runner instead of Alonso, I believe - that was clever).

My main two gripes about the coaching has 1) been how lost the batters looked with RISP, especially with none or one out over the last year and one month and 2) rojas’ bullpen management.

I think he is way too slow to get people up when relievers come in w/o good stuff and does things that put the team in bad position- like using Diaz b2b with a 4 run lead Sunday night which put the pen into a hole heading into St Louis.

So, to summarize, I thought this team was disappointing as hell last year. They just had no plan at the plate overall, it felt like to me. So, I’ve yet to really see anything that I really like about Rojas in-game. I think this team is very talented and that they were just not playing well last year and then so far this year had struggled until this week.

I don’t know how much a hitting coach matters, but it really seems like the Mets have been much more of a bunch of grinders at the plate the last 4 days and that is great to see, as was the base running aggression tonight.

Hopefully he’s earned a giant extension by the end of this year. Because, I have believed in the talent of this team - even without Lugo, Thor and Carrasco since day 1.
On a totally separate topic
jpkmets : 5/8/2021 11:15 pm : link
Mets have both Monday and Thursday off this week for the second time in the last three weeks. They have three more weeks like that this year. They are all around two game sets with AL East teams. I don’t recall them scheduling two off days in a week - and certainly not so frequently. Am I misremembering this? Good for the pitching staff, obviously. Hopefully deGrom is good to go regularly and we can use the off days to just skip 5he 5th starter.

Jake will have an extra day of rest even in a 4 man rotation. Stroman Tuesday, Walker Wednesday and the Peterson Friday and Jake back on Saturday.

Hunter seems like a total character. Really seems to like McCann a LOT. That’s cool to hear.
Early season panic?
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/8/2021 11:31 pm : link
#Mets have now won four straight games, won their fifth series of the season, are 13-2 when scoring four or more runs in a game, and are now 11-3 when scoring first in a game.
Braves falling apart in extras
jpkmets : 5/8/2021 11:56 pm : link
Throwing the ball around.

Phils already playing their 8th game against Atlanta and is set to move to 6-2 against the Braves.
Rojas has the Mets playing heads up baseball
Vanzetti : 5/9/2021 12:07 am : link
They seem to have taken off after firing Chili

He has also been pushing the right buttons in the pen. Taking Diaz out in Philly for Familia. A lot of mangers would have stuck with their closer

Everything always looks better when you are winning but maybe he grows into the job

Not so fast! Braves load the bases on a walk and a sung,e and Contreras clears em with a double. Braves tie it up. Now man on second 0 outs. Chance to vault back into a tie for first. Nice response to their awful top 11.

There have been many. You don’t have to go back much further than game one of cardinals series to a game that was lost specifically because of the manager, and there have been 2-3 others as well which is a lot early in the season. I am not on here acting like he needs to go but I am also not on here acting as though those who are saying that are with really obvious and valid reasons. This isn’t the mythical “players aren’t hitting” its at time bizzare management of starters.

Just read a funny quote from him postgame:

Quote:
“I got a f–king no-hitter going, yeah I wanted to go back out,” Hunter joked after making his first big league “start” since 2012 with Baltimore.

Baseball is a lot of fun when the pen and/or bench are producing - lots of weirdos and characters tend to be found in those groups.

Didn't see the game last night (live music night at Ledyard's BBQ).
Watched the highlights on MLB.com (8.5 innings of fun in 7.5 minutes).

More good defensive plays in one game than we used to see in a week!! Some scout once said Alonzo's D was 'unplayable' at 1B -- that scout should turn in his notebook. Pillar can play CF on my team any day of the week.

I've griped about the manager in the past, but this is the hand we've been dealt...let's play it out. Last night's lineup may be as good as it gets for the next 2 weeks.

Funny that it took a runaway rodent (or a miscue in the middle infield) to get this thing going.
