a good idea for our starting QB? Positive note ... it looks like DJ is close with both Slayton and Stills. It would be nice to see them all grow together.
Cheers. Link - ( New Window )
but I'm not going to knock the guy for having fun. This is a good way to strengthen his relationship with his teammates. D
I feel bad for David Sills. Last season he impressed the coaches with his performance in training camp and was poised to received significant playing time at WR. Unfortunately, he suffered a fractured foot and was lost for the year.
David Sills is healthy but he has an uphill battle to make the team unless the Giants decide to carry 7 WR's. Golladay, Slayton, Shepard, and Toney are locks. I think that Ross is safe also so that leaves one spot between Dante Pettis and David Sills. Pettis was a dangerous return man in college which gives him a big advantage over Sills. Whoever proves to be the better special teams player will more than likely win the final spot.
I just hope that Sills is safe on the practice squad if he agrees to return.
hurt, that could really happen on any training type excercise. Plus, this may not be obvious to many of you, the fact that DJ can ball builds massive cred points in lockerroom.
Back in the day, the Giants used to have a basketball team that would play at colleges. I saw them play at Colgate and at American University in the mid-1980s.
In the latter game, they played against the Redskins and the game got very testy. Those two teams did not like each.

Now that you mention this, I do remember them playing BB for charity in the spring. I think William Roberts was a mainstay ... saw them play at a local HS in the MHV.

Ha! Ive told this story before. I got to play WITH the team when they played against the Portsmouth RI fire department. It was surreal. Yes Roberts was by far the best player on the court. The guy was dunking, flying up and down the court. I got in and was straight jacking 3s (I was 12). All my shots kept rattling in and out. Pepper Johnson eventually picked me up and let me dunk it. Then he left me hanging from the rim. He was kinda like the MC yrlling into the mic all game.
The roster Im pretty sure was:
Pepper
William Roberts
Rodney Hampton
Dave Meggett (awful basketball player)
Lamar McGriggs
Bobby Abrams
As mentioned in article, it was a violation of the standard MLB contract (and I would guess still is).
Boone was released from his ~$6M one-year deal and the Yanks traded for ARod to be their 3B. Otherwise, he probably goes to Boston.
the bounce of the ball - ( New Window )
I wasthinking back on it and that is really the only cautionary tale I could think of regarding basketball causing a major injury to an athlete. Hell Im 41 and basketball is a big part of my low impact exercise. Obv if you have had knee or leg issues in the past that changes things once you get into the upper 30s. But even just shooting around and chasing down the ball for an hour burns a TON of calories.

100% ... Basketball is a natural HIIT workout. Lots of different movements with very little down time.
just because he is a a starting quarterback in the NFL. Let him have some fun.
I guarantee the contract he signed has a paragraph a mile long listing every sport he can't play/participate in. It only becomes a problem when he blows his knee out...the team could choose to stop paying him if they can prove he violated his contract.
I played professional baseball for 11 years and played with a guy who was supposed to make the big league roster one year. He blew his knee out before spring training playing basketball, but told the team he did it stepping off the curb. The team eventually found out and he and his agent agreed to 2/3 of his salary.
The standard MLB/MLBPA contract has a ton of stipulations that cover the team's ass if a player gets injured in the off season doing anything but running or lifting. I'll bet NFL contracts are a lot worse because their union is so weak.

Wanna hint at you are? Lol. I realize that its uncomfy. But I would like to onow. My email is in my profile.
I think that somewhow Sills will be battling Mack for a job.
- They both have decent size. Not great but decent. More importantly, better size than anyone else besides Golladay.
- From a 2022 perspective, we will have Golladay, Slayton and Toney as pretty much locks. There is a good chance that Sheppard is a cap casualty and both Pettis and Ross will be free agents. Sills and Mack will be also but they will be ERFA I believe. I think this will have some factor in the decision making.
- You are right that specials will probably be a factor. While Pettis was a very good return guy in college, he hasn't shown that skill in the pros. I think we have enough return guys ahead of him, it will be the non-returner special teams positions which will be more of the factor.
by chance they get in trouble, now they can't play a friendly game of a sport? Sure, you'd like to wrap these guys in bubble-wrap in the offseason, but it's just not feasible. You can't lock them in their homes all offseason. It's fine.

If you knew how many guest speakers these guys have to listen to about the pitfalls of partying, dipping, smoking, basketball, skiing, etc. I was in spring training the year the 2 Cleveland Indian pitchers were decapitated driving a boat at night. The teams do expect a player to put their lives on hold for their careers. The good ones understand basketball, pussy, and liquor will still be there when they're out of the game (or are smart enough not to get caught). Imagine how badly losing DJ to an ACL tear would hurt the Giants right now...you gonna give him a 5th year option after he sits the year out? This ain't intramurals and there's always somebody waiting to take your job.

I remember going to see the Giants play local charity basketball games in southern CT a couple times in the early-mid 80s as a kid, fun times. I do recall being very excited to see LT in real life, and both times he was a no show.
If memory serves, each time they announced he had a flat tire on the way to the game or something like that, and I was really worried about him being stuck on the side of the highway (when I was about 8 or so)
Hopefully he is playing just on the perimeter. I would not want him attacking the rim where if he got hit it potentially puts his body in a awkward landing where very significant injuries have occurred.
when he was still with the Giants. I assume a lot of guys do it, and are cautious.
Side note: I've played against plenty of great athletes, and OBJ was far and away the most athletic person I've ever seen that close. Shorter than 6', he was dunking at will. That quick burst speed was almost to the point of being unbelievable.
but it is good exercise, and I remember the Giants' basketball teams Eric mentioned. An Aaron Boone situation would be pretty bad, but I would imagine they're playing at a speed that makes that unlikely.
Back in the day, the Giants used to have a basketball team that would play at colleges. I saw them play at Colgate and at American University in the mid-1980s.

for Davidson; I’d bet they play 1 on 1 all the time!
DJ played high school basketball, and played on an AAU team coached by Jay Bilas. Bilas said he thought Jones could have played basketball at Duke, which presumably was hyperbole. Bilas' son (who was a walk-on at Wake), played with Jones, responded to those comments saying Jones might've had a shot as a walk-on at Duke. Regardless, he's obviously a pretty good basketball player, whether good enough to be a high level D-1 scrub or not.
According to The News & Observer's Steve Wiseman and Scott Fowler, Bates Jones, a graduate transfer from Davidson and the brother of former Duke football quarterback Daniel Jones, has committed to Duke on a scholarship for his final year of eligibility.
Jones, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 2.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in 12.7 minutes per contest for the Wildcats this past season. While his numbers don't jump off the page, any depth in the frontcourt is needed after the recent departures of Matthew Hurt, Patrick Tapé and Jaemyn Brakefield.

Thanks FMiC; that is not as little playing time as I had thought.
FWIW, DJs younger sister is a sophomore starting GK for Duke.
He may have but Eli couldn’t move or jump anywhere close to DJ ...
I’m ‘funning’ just a bit ... I think this is pretty cool stuff ... but I do hope he’s stays away from the NASCAR ride alongs for a few years.
