An interesting comment about Carolina Staff from Bridgewater

Ben in Tampa : 5/12/2021 4:01 pm
The Giants hired Joe Judge and not Matt Rhule. Rhule was the most frequent name linked to the Giants last year. Whatever.

I found this to be an interesting comment from Bridgewater. Sour grapes? Maybe.

Quote:

“As an organization there’s things you can do better,” Bridgewater said on the podcast hosted by Bryant McFadden and Patrick Peterson. “I’ll just say this, for Joe Brady’s growth, that organization, they’ll have to practice different things in different ways. One thing we didn’t do much of when I was there, we didn’t practice two minute, really. We didn’t practice red zone. . . . You walk through the red zone stuff and then Saturday you come out and practice red zone, but you’d only get like 15 live reps. Guys’ reps would be limited.”

It’s “what if” thinking and maybe it’s not worth bringing up, but a comment like that makes me happy the Panthers got their guy and the Giants got Judge.

such a poor late game QB?

On Rhule, I'm very glad we ended-up with Judge instead. I just didn't see with Rhule. Granted, he's a very bright guy.

Now, he might work in Carolina, but I'll never say he was a miss.

I wanted Rhule and I think I was wrong. I feel like he's ultimately destined for college. A bit too rah rah. NFL players see through that after a while.

That being said, Bridgewater stinks and it's no one's fault but his own.
to be fair

I imagine it would be tough to compare what you're used to doing in practice with other teams and and what you did in your one year with a team when it happened to coincide with Covid.
I wanted Rhule

and I still think he will be a good coach in the NFL. First year in the NFL. He will make adjustments and grow like most coaches if this is true. Happy with Judge and my preference for Rhule was that I knew more about him at the time. I expect both will be very good coaches in time.

I'd go so far as to say he's a gifted one.

It's like how I've had a lot of great teachers, but there's one in particular who stands out above them all as having a legitimate gift for teaching.

I do as well and this is coming from a guy who wanted Rhule to be the Giants HC. Joe Judge's performance last year blew me away considering there were no on the field activities prior to training camp due to COVID.

It was frustrating watching teams like NE, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh develop day 3 picks or UDFA's into solid contributors. The Patriots would constantly lose offensive linemen and then just plug in another UDFA without skipping a beat. This is due to great coaching and their ability to get the most out of a player. The Giants were not the most talented team in football but they were in most games mostly due to the defense.

The coaching staff deserves a lot of credit for not only getting these young players(Tae Crowder, Cam Brown, Carter Coughlin, Darnay Holmes, Niko Lalos) ready to play but they were also playing well. I look forward to seeing this staff work with more talented players like Azeez Ojulari, Elerson Smith, and even Ryan Anderson. It wouldn't surprise me if Anderson records 6-8 sacks next season.

I am not expecting Carter to play early in the season if at all which opens up a starting spot. I think Ojulari will win one starting spot but the other will be a competition between Ximines, Anderson, Odenigbo, Brown, and Coughlin. I could easily see Anderson winning that competition. Regardless of whether or not he starts I expect him to receive plenty of playing time.
I'm not sure how many coaches I'm taking over Judge at the moment

Tomlin and John Harbaugh maybe?

I know BB is the popular choice but if you're trying to build consistency and longevity over the next 10-20 years, is he really your guy?

I feel pretty confident Judge is going to hit the 10 year mark minimum here, just a hunch.

One guy who has proven nothing but I think is going to be a really good one is Dan Campbell. We'll see.
Judge has transformed everything in the most positive ways

We just had our best draft in years and that's no accident.
The team has exemplary coaching with depth, so smart.
We are set up next year and certainly years to come.
Judge could probably give us weekend warriors a pep talk and we show up ready to play on Sunday
Rhule
Toth029 : 5/12/2021 4:52 pm : link
May or may not be that guy, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt along with Joe Brady.

Teddy went on a radio show and threw others under the bus. I don't like that term, but it's best way to describe it. Teddy flat out takes no responsibility for his play. Just go to Denver and throw more 5 yard passes when you need to win the game.

FatMan in Charlotte : 5/12/2021 5:01 pm : link
has gone about this the wrong way. He's felt slighted because the team made it sound like he'd be the QB here until his deal ended and if they hadn't gotten Darnold, they would've drafted a QB.

Maybe what he is saying is true, but it is coming from a guy who has some anger from the way he was treated.

He really should be thankful they gave him a chance.

I feel the same way. I was on the Rhule bandwagon despite not knowing much about either him or Judge. I still liked the Judge hire due to the background, but I did want Rhule initially.

But after watching both of their first press conferences, I just "liked" Judge a lot more. I thought Judge's introductory press conference was an A+, it just really convinced me he had what it takes. I don't know what I'd grade Rhule's press conference but I just remember thinking his personality was a slight turn off. The way he talked definitely backed up the "Preacher's Son" background info, which is fine but not the way I want my professional coach to speak. That act can get tiring.

I had exactly the same reaction, which is why the fact that I didn’t like Rhule as more of a personal judgement than a professional assessment, not that I’m a professional anyway!

I could very easily see Rhule getting Carolina back on track. But this throwing-spaghetti-at-the-wall-and-hope-something-sticks QB strategy could be his undoing, too.

I like Darnold and think the best thing that happened to him was getting out of NY. But he needs to get good pretty fast or else it's back to the drawing board for Rhule...

but Rhule seemed high-handed when he announced he was taking a week off immediately after the last game of the season even though the Giants were interviewing.

Judge takes things like management, delegation, motivation very seriously. Those are extremely practical disciplines that pay dividends for people who are good at applying them.

Nothing like jumping on the bandwagon without really knowing anything. At least you’re honest which I respect. I love JJ I am so excited about our future with him. It is clear he is just “different” not her way to explain it.

My concern, which I hesitate to even put in writing, is that he will pull a Ray Perkins and leave for Alabama when Nick Saban decides to step aside. Suppose that's 8-10 years from now and he's had a great run as Giants coach. He'll be a plum hire for the Crimson Tide, and he'll be at the age where he might prefer being king of the hill in college to the 20-hour-a-day grind of an NFL season. Even with the recruiting. He loves teaching and I bet he loves working with younger players.

On the other hand, if Nick Saban stays on as long as Bear Bryant, never mind about all that.

If he's being truthful, it might be a legitimate excuse. If the team isn't prepared for late-game situations, it's hard for the QB to look good.

Carter

Coughlin
Brown
Odenigbo
Ragland - can play edge

one guy thinks Ryan Anderson is going to get 8 sacks

the other guy thinks we're so stacked at the position that he's going to get cut.

Personally if we're talking about Edge rushers I think Ximines and Carter are in trouble.
The giants have made a ton of bad decisions
DavidinBMNY : 5/13/2021 8:04 am : link
But hiring Joe Judge is the best decision they have made in a long time. He has a bright future ahead of him. I do believe that this is the first year in a long time the Giants have a legitimate shot at being over 500 and challenging for the playoffs. It's been a long time since the Giants have been a feared opponent. Teams counted that's a "W" when playing us. We're not there yet, but we're trending in the right direction.

If there's one person who in the last 10 years that has been added to the organization that has done the most to feel like I don't have to care about who were playing (beating seattle, on the road with McCoy) it's judge.

For years have to pick games to buy tickets to , to try and see a win (lets go see Washington). Now I'd go to any game .

It could be, but I doubt he's making this up. It would be too easy for others to refute. If it's true, it's pretty inexcusable, IMO.
In their rookie year as coaches, Judge was 6-10; Rhule was 5-11

Vegas believes Carolina will be better in 2021 despite being in a superior division. Which means the current expectation is that the Panthers will beat the Giants in their head to head matchup despite being in East Rutherford. Both the Giants and Panthers appear to have just had solid drafts.

You are what your record says you are. Even Parcells had to go through the adversity of 1983 before he got the brass ring. Both of these coaches will likely have to endure failure before they achieve success in this league. Whoever manages it better will ultimately be viewed as the superior NFL head coach.
The verdict is in.

I’m guilty on all counts of wanting Matt Rhule and questioning the hire of the Judge. Now awaiting sentencing.

They both "endured failure" last year. I don't know squat about Rhule, but I'm pretty sure JJ doesn't plan on enduring (season long) failure again, anytime soon.

2020 was JJ's 1983 (and he did a better job than Parcells did in '83, especially considering the circumstances). And I think JJ's Giants will skip the 1984 step and go straight to the 1985 stage (but win the div). Then in 2022, that's when it really gets good.

I would be very surprised if Ryan Anderson didn't make this team. We were devoid of pass rushers. We will likely keep six. Carter is coming off a serious injury. Ximines, Smith, Odenigbo, & Lalos are guys that played DE, are only used to moving forward at the snap, and haven't proven that they can play OLB and be competent, let alone effective, in space.

Brown & Coughlin are day three picks who were too light as rookies to be "multiple" as the Giants want guys who can play with their hand in the dirt on occasion; neither guy was capable of setting the edge.

Ragland is an inside guy who gets labeled as a run stuffer but probably has the best feel for coverage out of the guys at ILB.

Ryan Anderson was a 2nd round pick out of Alabama. He is young at 27 and he has been used all wrong according to what I've read. I believe that he will be a huge asset to this defense. No reason to think he will not make the team when none of the other guys have done jack shit in this league.
We've officially hijacked this thread
LeonBright45 : 5/13/2021 11:55 am : link
I will go out on a limb and say that Anderson will be our day one starter at LOLB if Carter is not ready yet. I am hoping that Ximines & Carter start initially if they are healthy and were they should be in their development under this coaching staff. I am hoping that all of our guys progress and play well, but these two were 3rd round picks that I am hopeful for. Beyond that we have Anderson & Ojulari as the primary backups . Azeez should be starting as soon as he's ready which could be from day one. Odenigbo might earn reps in some packages as a 4-3 type DE. Smith needs to put on more muscle and learn to play OLB; I see a redshirt year for him basically playing on special teams if he's even activated. Brown either needs to have put on a lot of muscle mass or change positions; he is an ILB/SS coverage guy like a poor man's Isaiah Simmons & he is another special teams guy. Coughlin should compete a ILB where he might be more valuable as a versatile guy who can play inside or out like Ragland can.
2nd half of the season
allstarjim : 5/13/2021 12:28 pm : link
Giants got better...went 5-3.

Panthers, not so much. 2-6 in the 2nd half. In fact, after a 3-2 start, they went 2-9 the rest of the way.

Vegas can think what they want.

The Giants got A LOT better this offseason. And the impact of a returning Saquon Barkley is going to be huge. We have to still see what happens with injuries through the first month or so into the season, but going in, you're saying a team that showed massive improvement from the first half to the 2nd half of the season, then added Golladay and Adoree' Jackson among others, returning Saquon Barkley, and then the pieces in the draft the obtained...this team is way better than a 7 win team.

The other team can still be hopeful but they didn't show improvement over the course of the season under their new head coach like the Giants did.
