The Giants hired Joe Judge and not Matt Rhule. Rhule was the most frequent name linked to the Giants last year. Whatever.
I found this to be an interesting comment from Bridgewater. Sour grapes? Maybe.
“As an organization there’s things you can do better,” Bridgewater said on the podcast hosted by Bryant McFadden and Patrick Peterson. “I’ll just say this, for Joe Brady’s growth, that organization, they’ll have to practice different things in different ways. One thing we didn’t do much of when I was there, we didn’t practice two minute, really. We didn’t practice red zone. . . . You walk through the red zone stuff and then Saturday you come out and practice red zone, but you’d only get like 15 live reps. Guys’ reps would be limited.” |
It’s “what if” thinking and maybe it’s not worth bringing up, but a comment like that makes me happy the Panthers got their guy and the Giants got Judge.
On Rhule, I'm very glad we ended-up with Judge instead. I just didn't see with Rhule. Granted, he's a very bright guy.
Now, he might work in Carolina, but I'll never say he was a miss.
That being said, Bridgewater stinks and it's no one's fault but his own.
I'd go so far as to say he's a gifted one.
It's like how I've had a lot of great teachers, but there's one in particular who stands out above them all as having a legitimate gift for teaching.
I do as well and this is coming from a guy who wanted Rhule to be the Giants HC. Joe Judge's performance last year blew me away considering there were no on the field activities prior to training camp due to COVID.
It was frustrating watching teams like NE, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh develop day 3 picks or UDFA's into solid contributors. The Patriots would constantly lose offensive linemen and then just plug in another UDFA without skipping a beat. This is due to great coaching and their ability to get the most out of a player. The Giants were not the most talented team in football but they were in most games mostly due to the defense.
The coaching staff deserves a lot of credit for not only getting these young players(Tae Crowder, Cam Brown, Carter Coughlin, Darnay Holmes, Niko Lalos) ready to play but they were also playing well. I look forward to seeing this staff work with more talented players like Azeez Ojulari, Elerson Smith, and even Ryan Anderson. It wouldn't surprise me if Anderson records 6-8 sacks next season.
I am not expecting Carter to play early in the season if at all which opens up a starting spot. I think Ojulari will win one starting spot but the other will be a competition between Ximines, Anderson, Odenigbo, Brown, and Coughlin. I could easily see Anderson winning that competition. Regardless of whether or not he starts I expect him to receive plenty of playing time.
I know BB is the popular choice but if you're trying to build consistency and longevity over the next 10-20 years, is he really your guy?
I feel pretty confident Judge is going to hit the 10 year mark minimum here, just a hunch.
One guy who has proven nothing but I think is going to be a really good one is Dan Campbell. We'll see.
The team has exemplary coaching with depth, so smart.
We are set up next year and certainly years to come.
Judge could probably give us weekend warriors a pep talk and we show up ready to play on Sunday
Teddy went on a radio show and threw others under the bus. I don't like that term, but it's best way to describe it. Teddy flat out takes no responsibility for his play. Just go to Denver and throw more 5 yard passes when you need to win the game.
Maybe what he is saying is true, but it is coming from a guy who has some anger from the way he was treated.
He really should be thankful they gave him a chance.
Or dare I say Don Shula who was HC of the Colts around 32 years of age? Yes, Tomlin would be fine… :)
I feel the same way. I was on the Rhule bandwagon despite not knowing much about either him or Judge. I still liked the Judge hire due to the background, but I did want Rhule initially.
But after watching both of their first press conferences, I just "liked" Judge a lot more. I thought Judge's introductory press conference was an A+, it just really convinced me he had what it takes. I don't know what I'd grade Rhule's press conference but I just remember thinking his personality was a slight turn off. The way he talked definitely backed up the "Preacher's Son" background info, which is fine but not the way I want my professional coach to speak. That act can get tiring.

I wanted Rhule and I think I was wrong. I feel like he's ultimately destined for college. A bit too rah rah. NFL players see through that after a while.

I had exactly the same reaction, which is why the fact that I didn’t like Rhule as more of a personal judgement than a professional assessment, not that I’m a professional anyway!

Agree on Campbell. I think he will be good. Judge won me over at the press conference, his building of the staff, and has stayed the course since.
I could very easily see Rhule getting Carolina back on track. But this throwing-spaghetti-at-the-wall-and-hope-something-sticks QB strategy could be his undoing, too.
I like Darnold and think the best thing that happened to him was getting out of NY. But he needs to get good pretty fast or else it's back to the drawing board for Rhule...
That would be incredible

Of the NY Giants has a long-term feel to it. Hoping for some Mike Tomlin-esque longevity.
That would be incredible
Sure would be. Tomlin does what it takes to win in the NFL...
Judge takes things like management, delegation, motivation very seriously. Those are extremely practical disciplines that pay dividends for people who are good at applying them.

Nothing like jumping on the bandwagon without really knowing anything. At least you’re honest which I respect. I love JJ I am so excited about our future with him. It is clear he is just “different” not her way to explain it.

On the other hand, if Nick Saban stays on as long as Bear Bryant, never mind about all that.
If he's being truthful, it might be a legitimate excuse. If the team isn't prepared for late-game situations, it's hard for the QB to look good.

Ragland - can play edge
the other guy thinks we're so stacked at the position that he's going to get cut.
Personally if we're talking about Edge rushers I think Ximines and Carter are in trouble.
If there's one person who in the last 10 years that has been added to the organization that has done the most to feel like I don't have to care about who were playing (beating seattle, on the road with McCoy) it's judge.
For years have to pick games to buy tickets to , to try and see a win (lets go see Washington). Now I'd go to any game .
On Rhule, I'm very glad we ended-up with Judge instead. I just didn't see with Rhule. Granted, he's a very bright guy.

It could be, but I doubt he's making this up. It would be too easy for others to refute. If it's true, it's pretty inexcusable, IMO.
You are what your record says you are. Even Parcells had to go through the adversity of 1983 before he got the brass ring. Both of these coaches will likely have to endure failure before they achieve success in this league. Whoever manages it better will ultimately be viewed as the superior NFL head coach.
They both "endured failure" last year. I don't know squat about Rhule, but I'm pretty sure JJ doesn't plan on enduring (season long) failure again, anytime soon.
2020 was JJ's 1983 (and he did a better job than Parcells did in '83, especially considering the circumstances). And I think JJ's Giants will skip the 1984 step and go straight to the 1985 stage (but win the div). Then in 2022, that's when it really gets good.
Are you offering to wash Joe Judge's 30 something year old balls too? Nice guy.

I’m guilty on all counts of wanting Matt Rhule and questioning the hire of the Judge. Now awaiting sentencing.

Fyi, they're nearly 40 yrs old.

I would be very surprised if Ryan Anderson didn't make this team. We were devoid of pass rushers. We will likely keep six. Carter is coming off a serious injury. Ximines, Smith, Odenigbo, & Lalos are guys that played DE, are only used to moving forward at the snap, and haven't proven that they can play OLB and be competent, let alone effective, in space.
Brown & Coughlin are day three picks who were too light as rookies to be "multiple" as the Giants want guys who can play with their hand in the dirt on occasion; neither guy was capable of setting the edge.
Ragland is an inside guy who gets labeled as a run stuffer but probably has the best feel for coverage out of the guys at ILB.
Ryan Anderson was a 2nd round pick out of Alabama. He is young at 27 and he has been used all wrong according to what I've read. I believe that he will be a huge asset to this defense. No reason to think he will not make the team when none of the other guys have done jack shit in this league.
Panthers, not so much. 2-6 in the 2nd half. In fact, after a 3-2 start, they went 2-9 the rest of the way.
Vegas can think what they want.
The Giants got A LOT better this offseason. And the impact of a returning Saquon Barkley is going to be huge. We have to still see what happens with injuries through the first month or so into the season, but going in, you're saying a team that showed massive improvement from the first half to the 2nd half of the season, then added Golladay and Adoree' Jackson among others, returning Saquon Barkley, and then the pieces in the draft the obtained...this team is way better than a 7 win team.
The other team can still be hopeful but they didn't show improvement over the course of the season under their new head coach like the Giants did.
