Contract coming up and Dundon is not exactly the most generous owner. I'm a Canes fan and hate even the thought losing Brind'amour. He loves the area and has been a great coach/player for this franchise – just hoping Dundon steps up.
and a short shelf life doesn't really appeal to me with such a young team.
This doesn't bother me as much in the NHL as the NFL. I read Gallant's issues are managing upwards. It's a bit different than a Torts burnout type of thing.
Gallant is more likely and while I would be interested to see if Julien is considered, I’d be good with Gallant too. Gallant makes a lot of sense, as he took a team of misfits and castoffs and molded them into a Cup contender in one season. The Rangers, in a way, have a group of players that don’t necessarily mesh together, maybe he can be the guy to make them a more cohesive unit.
No, I still believe Tony played his last game as a Ranger. He’s an elite offensive talent, but he’s a right shot D, Rangers already have Fox, Trouba, and Lundkvist who are all also right shots. Also, DeAngelo shies away from contact and I won’t say he’s a defensive liability, he is not strong in his own end. I think it’s more likely we see Brendan Smith come back, actually, albeit at a reduced rate.
Too many unforced giveaways in his own end, outlet passes to no one in particular, often the opponent. Beyond that his baggage makes him untouchable by Drury, imo. Dynamite on the PP. Roster as is and potentially is crowded as it is on the backline. Agree with the take on Smith, workmanlike whenever asked to assume a role, and has a bit of those missing grits on his plate.
but Leetch has stepped down from his "hockey operations advisor" position with the team. Apparently Drury asked him to stay on and it was Leetch's choice to leave. link - ( New Window )
his welcome, but that's a minor concern. Be very happy if they can reel him in.
That's really the only concern.
Apparently with Florida, the issue was that the minority owner put a heavy emphasis on analytics and he and the analytics department would text Gallant during periods to try to get him to play certain players and not others. Gallant was obviously resistant of the micromanaging and that was that.
With Vegas, apparently the owner had a hard-on for Pete Deboer so when he shook loose, Vegas had to have him.

I worry about Gallant too, but if I were coaching a live game and getting texts from analytics nerds during play telling me who I should play, I'd probably tell them to fuck off too.

Hearing that Gerard Gallant’s interview went well with the New York Rangers. Gallant squeezed it in before flying this weekend to the men’s worlds where he is coaching Team Canada.

Rangers have hired Mike Grier as adviser to hockey operations, Post has learned. Drury and Grier go back to mid-90s as BU teammates, reunited in Buffalo mid-00s. That fills vacancy created by Leetch's departure. Drury aggressive reaching out to candidates to fill mgt. spots.
He has been with Carolina for over 2 decades and they tend not to be rash with firing coaches so why exactly would he leave?

He'd be the best, but IDK, I can't see Carolina letting him go. I think they'll get an extension done. He'll probably win the Jack Adams this year.

But probably going to be Gallsnt. Other guys mentioned are a little too old

Drury already said DeAngelo is finished as a Ranger, never coming back.

NYR get permission to interview Gerard Gallant.

who do they need permission from? Team Canada? Seems like a situation where they wouldn't need to even ask.

He's probably still under contract with Vegas
I don't think it works that way that when you fire a guy you can deny him access to interview elsewhere.
Gallant is coach of Team Canada for the worlds, as far as I know that's his only current affiliation.
Probably just a courtesy to Team Canada IMO, unnecessary but I guess courteous.
Unless I'm missing something.

Vegas is still paying him. It's happened before. Look at Todd McClellan and Dan Bylsma.

interesting, thanks.
And Brind'Amour is a flower someone wears in their hat to show people that they are in love.
