NFT: Invincible: Amazon Show (possible spoilers)

Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 5/14/2021 10:47 am
I just binge watched this recently and I really enjoyed it. It's a Superhero cartoon based on a comic book written by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead).

At first, I had no intention of watching it because I'm pretty Superhero'd out when it comes to TV/Movies, that genre has dominated over the last decade plus. But the reviews for this from my friends and a clip I saw on YouTube made me think it might be worth watching.

It is what it is, a cartoon comic book story about a Superhero. But they definitely don't hide the fact that it's "Rated R" and take full advantage of it in terms of violence. The first episode of the series was awesome and I got hooked immediately.

It's not the most original story. The main character is pretty much a hybrid of Spider-Man and Superman and it reminds me a little of the old Spider-Man cartoons. But I just really thought it was a good show with interesting characters and I'd recommend it to anyone into the Super-Hero genre.
I plan on getting to it eventually

very much "The Boys" vibes.

Not to change the subject but if you like animation and Scifi check out Love Death + Robots on Netflix. Season 2 just launched today, can't wait to check them out tonight. Its essentially 15-20 short stories that are all different animation styles, telling some really strange but very cool stories. Tim Miller and David Fincher produce it.
Invincible was solid

Really strong cast and, while it's not the most ground breaking storyline it was interesting

When I was stuck at home during the peak of COVID last year, that was one of the first shows I watched since the episodes are so short. A little hit or miss since all the episodes are different stories, but I liked it. Thanks for the heads up.

"Invincible" definitely has "The Boys" vibes, especially since there's a character who is a little similar to Homelander.

So excited about this one. The first season was awesome, especially the one about the space travel and the sheer terror inducing reveal of the plot.

Speaking of Netflix, they have some great animation series with Castlevania being the top one for me. They have a Japanese animation series called Ajin that was so creative in its concept. Highly recommend it.

I'm very much into the newer age animation (I was an anime fan back in the day but sometimes it can be too damn corny). I keep meaning to give Castlevania a go. Haven't heard of Ajin yet but I'll give it a look.

To this day I still wish we got a full movie or series based on the Kill Bill short of O'ren-Oshii's backstory. Such an awesome way to tell that story.

I'm with you with regards to newer age animation, which I think Netflix is hitting out of the park. The big one that everyone is watching is the Demon Slayer series aligned with the Demon Slayer movie that has killed in the theaters.

eh. I refuse to watch the The Boys because the comics were the biggest lump of shit I've read. Invincible is nothing like that at all. If the show resembles it even in the slightest I'm out cause they have nothing in common and I loved the Invincible comic. My only knock on it deals with the introduction of the JLA like team. Kirkman said he only did that to give readers some attachment to the characters...before certain events occur.
You are missing out then

“Primal” was one of the best new shows I watched last year. It’s from the creator of “Samurai Jack” which is another good show. Really gorgeous animation imo with limited to no dialogue.

eh maybe. I bought a box set of Ennis stuff based on some hype. He sucks. The writing is terrible and it is all disgusting shock value. A couple friends keep telling me to watch it and I asked if had x,y,z (stuff i don't even want to type here) in it and they said no. So maybe it is vastly different and I'm being hard headed cause I hate the source so much.

As for Invincible, if there is a lot of gore and excessive violence then it has failed the source material. The comics had some for sure, but it made sense in the story and wasn't excessive or for shock value like anything Garth Ennis does. Anyhow, if you guys like it I can guarantee you the story won't disappoint.

Oh yeah...on HBOMax. I've got that on queue to watch.
It doesn’t hurt to try it

just shut it off if you don’t like it.
I am not a fan of Kirkman's work...

other than Invincible. Most of his other stuff is very boring, and I honestly don't think he's a good writer, but Invincible had the most in terms of character building of any of his comics that I read. Even though it's heavy on violence, there's a lot of playful things that are done with comic tropes in the writing.

I watched the first 2.5 episodes of the show last night and the cast is very good. Excited to watch the rest of it.
Agree with UConn

Love Death + Robots is excellent.

Castlevania Season 1 is very good but they quickly ran dry of story once season 1 concludes. Kind of put themselves in a hole killing off the most compelling character and then realizing, "Hey, we need to make more episodes."
Invincible is fun. Much more light hearted than The Boys, imo
Heisenberg : 5/14/2021 2:00 pm : link
They do share some gore, compared to the typical Superhero genre. But the rest of the show is not nearly the same and the difference between cartoon gore and what's in the Boys is a big difference. Aside from the superhero stuff, Invincible is about a high school kid and a lot of the story revolves around that.
Invincible is great
GerryL : 5/14/2021 3:09 pm : link
As a fan of the source material, Invincible the show is great. It has lots of the same iconic moments from the books. It re-arranges some of the order, but that translates better to the video medium pacing. Well worth the watch. I'm sure hard-core fans find something to nit-pick, but this hard-core fan is enjoying the ride.

I'm re-reading, and the violence is there in the books, but I think you notice it more when it is animated.

I also hate the Boys comparisons. Granted, I've read the source materials, and I've got the deeper background, but I feel it's a lazy comparison that focuses on a superficial similarity between one of the main characters from each show, combined with the more realistic portrayal of the what chaos and violence ensue from beings of such extraordinary powers. It ignores the core of the shows. The Boys is corporatism gone awry, and Invincible is a coming-of-age story with an epic scale.

In a couple of more seasons, as the story advances, people won't be making the comparison.
The Boys comparison to me
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 5/14/2021 3:30 pm : link
Is just about the fact that it’s a very violent superhero show that’s from Amazon. The shows are not much alike beyond that but it’s clearly a similar genre.
yeah that's where the comparison for me is
UConn4523 : 5/14/2021 3:35 pm : link
I haven't watch Invincible yet but the trailers and clips I've seen give off that feel. I know the stories are very different.
I'm 4 episodes in,

and Im loving it. Lots of fun, though I am someone who is not sick of the superhero genre.

That said, this is a quality show, really worth a watch.
I just watched the 1st episode

and have to admit I was like WTF just happened at the end. I enjoyed it and will keep watching so thanks for the reco.
