Side note, and not directed at you, but I personally hate when people use “craft” when talking about sports, etc. They aren’t painting or making wooden furniture, etc.
I'm picturing this signing happening. When you design a significant portion of your playbook around having a quick receiving tight end, it'd probably be nice to have a backup in case EE gets injured/traded.
Patriot thing to do, bring a retread at a different position than their original position and see what they can do.
You can never find a diamond if never try to dig.
The guy is probably cooked, but what if blocks better than Engram and Smith? Smith looked really bad last year too.
At the very least I think this sends a message to the TE group. Judge is basically saying your group played so pourly that we signed already surgically injured veteran TE and also brought in an overweight WR to try to convert put pressure on you. That should be embarrassing to them that the staff think that is competition for them.
I think they like Kaden Smith more as a third TE, and Levine Toilolo has a big edge as a blocker, which is what you need there. And Levine is also on the bubble as you think how Elijah Penny has a good chance to make the team, so it really comes down to a numbers crunch.
Mostly I like that the Giants are willing to look into it
which proves they are ready to try whatever it takes to improve.
That being said, I do worry about his drive/motivation. He could have been really special.
I just watched the rookie mini-camp day 1 video put out by the Giants and I paid attention to the Coach's interaction with him. Looked like he was coaching him about 'high and tight' and then they walked away with Judge looking somewhat annoyed. Kind of like he expected better from a veteran player.
I am very likely reading too much into that but still thought it was worth noting. He's a talented player and the effort he puts into this is what tells me he's serious and motivated.

Yea I'm replying to my own thread. Watched another video which I thought showed a different angle. It's not. Maybe that's why Judge looked annoyed teaching basics.
sorry gentlemen but there is no way you can determined what Judge was thinking based on his body language in those clips. I think we're reading too much into this
Question is why didn't he try out for the team last year when they had almost nothing out there at the WR and TE positions. After all the talent they being in to try out now seems dumb.
Sorry, pet peeve of mine lol.
On the other hand, the two vet running backs supposedly looked pretty good.
There were two 1st year TEs in camp today. Benjamin could show more upside than one of those two. Same with the RBs.

Well, he hasn't played in years no? I don't even remember the last time I saw him on the field. 2017?
Is he better than our top four WRs? No. Is he going to replace a 5th or 6th WR who also plays specials? Probably not.
I don't see him getting a contract based off of that.
Ito Smith
FYI, see pinned thread.

For the 90, he doesn't need to beat out those guys. He needs to beat out Nakia Griffin-Stewart, Nate Wieting, Cole Hikutini, or Rysen John.

If he makes the team it's on special teams, and he's never been that kind of effort player.

the Giants can throw alot of options at teams in the Red Zone.
....which once again, will depend of the OL and Daniel Jones.

If he makes the 53 it'd likely be at the expense of Kaden Smith, Toilolo, Ross, Pettis, Austin Mack, or even Eli Penny. Id be shocked.
On the other hand, I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of the backs- Ito Smith of Clement, get a contract. I like Smith , very good RB3.
