LB's at an average level in the NFL then do the Giants have their pass catching TE and can move on from EE?
EE-6'3 240
KB-6'5" 245
This will be an interesting watch at camp.
Again just lightly speculating but KB has always had great hands and runs routes efficiently. It was always his speed at a WR level that caused him to appear to be on the decline.
NJ.com was mentioning Judge was riding him hard yesterday. Figured that was either a bad sign for him that he needed correction or a good one that the HC giving individual attention. Looks like we got our answer.
Honestly I love the way Judge going about this. Building everything ground up in the details and very deliberate about each player and where they belong. Let’s hope players Union doesn’t fumble this offseason for us.
Around this signing is mind boggling... with an off season conditioning program this guy can be a matchup nightmare... linebackers and safeties will have to be on high alert when he’s on the field because this guy can catch and his athleticism is highly underrated. Tim Tebow is three years older and was a former QB and Jag fans are ecstatic to have him at TE... I just don’t get this board sometimes.
So you think signing a former WR bust who hasn't played football in three years is a sign that Engram is out?
Interesting take..
EE is at his all time high trade value (pro-bowl status), IMO he in not in the long term plans, and they are kicking tires at a similar skill set that may or may not work out. Better than just trading without at least looking to replace the skill set. We'll see in the next few weeks if an added draft pick is in the cards.

This is wrong, Engram’s status is at an all time low due to his issues last season combined with his cap number and it being the final year of his contract. Just because he made the pro bowl by default doesn’t make his trade value high. The giants would be lucky to receive a conditional 4th round pick for him right now.
Whether people like it or not Engram will be a Giant next season.

I will never understand the down side that people see in moves like this. They didnt sign the guy to an 8 figure multiyear contract.....this is a take a look at the guy, see if he has something we can use; if he doesnt, ok, no great loss. But if he does.....same with Tebow in Jax; people for years used to say about him that he should be tried at TE, so now Jax is doing it. Whats the downside, see what he has??? No great investment, no great loss if it doesnt work out.
Let him come in and compete and learn the playbook. Even if he doesn’t make the team, he’ll be on speed dial should someone get injured.
This is why I like the move. He’s unlikely to make the team but he can stay in shape and serve as depth if injuries arise. I’m not sure what the practice squad rules are this season but Benjamin could start there while he still gets comfortable at TE.
Giants are leaving no stone unturned in attempt to improve what has been a very poorly performing position, even after the Rudolph signing. Toilolo, presumably different skill set, didn't seem to have made much of an impact, to my eyes.
Evaluating TEs running the same plays in practice is way way easier
than evaluating films of TEs playing on different teams in different games against different opponents. There is no danger that Judge will keep Benjamin if there are better TEs on the Giants.
The only danger is that there might have been a better TE prospect to invite for a try-out causing the Giants to miss out on an opportunity to look at a better player.
solid that they trade EE at some point during the season. Obviously Rudolph and Benjamin aren’t the long term solution, but you can draft a TE with the multitude of picks they have next year.
Maybe Engram plays halfway decent the first 5-6 games and they flip him for a third rounder. Is it likely? No, but it’s possible. The key is whether they have any intention to sign EE to a long term deal after this season. If the answer is no you let him establish some value and trade him for the best offer.
and hasn't played since 2018. Now you want to change his position think he'll somehow add something to the team?
I'd rather take a chance on Tebow.
Also shows how thin we actually are at TE, especially if Rudolph doesn't make it back for September.
I wonder what held him back them? What has he been doing since 2018? Was he training or healing? Why come back now? It’s in interesting story. Link - ( New Window )
with tall TEs - Kyle Rudolph is a real TE. Benjamin at 6'5" is another tall Red Zone option, but a receiving threat.
Put the pads on and see how much he wants it.
Bingo. If I noticed how putrid our red zone options were last year I’m sure Judge did too. Red zone scoring percentage is crucial in a league where yardage is cheap. This sounds like getting familiar with a player when our top two options are old or injury prone.
In fact, I predict he will even outperform his All Pro year of last year by doing things even you didn’t think were possible. And then after this year, we sign him to a 4 year extension. Who needs Pitts anyhow when you have an Engram in your house?
player... if you look at his career highlights, he's made a ton of circus catches and is match-up nightmare due to his size. But he obviously fell off a cliff with three teams giving up on him.

Gettleman is the guy who drafted him. Maybe he has some private info about his situation.
Lots of room for vets on the expanded practice squad.
He has a ton to learn at TE, but maybe he can be ready by 2022, or as an injury replacement later this year. He’d have to work for peanuts in the meantime, but if he’s serious about coming back, this might be the path.
He wasn’t the smartest or most mature kid, grad high school at 20, his mom died while he was at the panthers and he tore his acl around the same time,‘got really depressed, didn’t put everything into football or training, felt supported by the players and staff, got fat and started blaming others. Got traded to the Bills who were a mess too, didn’t fit in there, sank more into depression, signed late with KC, but didn’t do much.
I hope he’s finally come around because he got therapy, got his life together, and started working out, and now is going to take advantage of a 2nd chance.

His knee injury paired with the subsequent weight gain made him useless outside.

I agree about the pessimism being unnecessary, but do you really think it strengthened your argument in any way to use Jaguars fans as some sort of standard?
KB is an interesting player for a bunch of reasons
He arrived at FSU under Jimbo Fisher and didn't play much at all as a freshman, he gained a bunch of weight and didn't do much. Then some hard coaching, getting in shape, and a Heisman winning quarterback made him a star. He has a great rookie season in Carolina and then gets hurt and basically returned to his freshman FSU form.
My guess is that he's the kind of player who needs someone on his ass at every practice pushing him to be better. He most likely will not make the team, but as far as coaching goes, he's probably in as good a situation as he could get. We also don't know what's going on behind the scenes, so who knows.
I will say one thing, he's always been a very willing blocker:
It’s a 90 person roster right now and KB is not #90 on the depth chart.
If he shows little in camp he gets cut with nothing lost.
If he shows potential, maybe he makes the PS as injury insurance for EE.
If he shines, it gives the Giants options regarding EE who’s in his contract year. I really can’t see any downside to this.
a pass catching TE who maybe can catch? Unlike Engram?
unorthodox moves like this. Awesome to see Judge thinking outside the box.
It’s always exciting signing a former high pick especially one with previous success but this time I’m not getting my hopes up. If the Giants didn’t sign Rudolph or they traded Engram away I would probably more excited about this move but I am not expecting much from Benjamin.
That’s not to say I don’t like the move. He has talent and maybe two years away from football will light a fire under him causing him to work his ass off because he realizes that this is probably his last chance at playing in the NFL. If he does work out it just adds another weapon for Jones especially in the red zone.

As someone whose Mom died when I was in my early 20s (I was 22 and closer to her than anyone), I know it's rough. For me, it was like a nightmare that I couldn't wake up from. It can affect your entire life for a while.
Another big target for DJ. Love the thought of flooding the red zone with Golladay, Rudolph and Benjamin. If they can turn him into half of Darren Waller, it will be a huge win for this team.

I'm rooting for Kelvin.
23 for me, had to watch my father drink himself to near death after, he killed himself when the drinking to excess failed. You never know what battles people face.
It's not out of the question that the death of Kelvin's mom had something to do with his career heading south. Lots of players get injured and come back, but death of your mom for a young man can be worse, much worse, than a torn ligament.
Maybe this is his chance to salvage what's left for him.

I don't know about the info after he left the Panthers, but your take meshes with what was said about his situation here. He had a pretty good start to his career, but then he got injured and lost his Mother and the double whammy really put him in a bad place. He didn't work out, didn't rehab like the team had hoped, gained weight and was disinterested. Those were likely signs of depression.
Rap Sheet - ( New Window )
If he is going to actually compete for a final roster spot he will either have to excel on special teams or surprise as a blocker which is unlikely.
That said, he's one of nine tight ends competing for 3 or 4 spots (I assume one of the TEs on the roster will be cut today).
