Expect him to be used as a gadget player and special teams player in year 1 as he continues to develop as a wide receiver. His NFL path will likely mirror his college path.

I think you’ll see plenty of him as a slot receiver and maybe even outside year one. They aren’t going to limit him to ST and special plays. He’s too much of a threat not to use him wherever and however they can.

Labeling a guy a gadget player doesn’t mean he needs to develop. Kd tyreek hill a gadget player? Are we waiting for him to develop still?
Toney is what he is. He’ll be used all over the field starting week 1 and logging id guess 75 percent of the snaps. He’s our main offensive weapon at this point. His route running is severely underrated. Look at his whip route it’s a thing of beauty
but kind of hard (for me) to believe JJ/DG picked a guy at #20 overall who they feel is developmental (as in needing a whole year to develop).
My guess is he will be eased in, but he'll be very involved in the O at some point this season.
Don’t understand where this “developmental “ stuff comes from. He was one the best offensive players in college football. Does he have NFL route running skills No. Almost no college WRs do. Otherwise, he’s as ready to go as most any rookie is.

A rookie is our main offensive weapon? I would put Barkley and Golladay above him. If Toney turns out to be our main offensive weapon this year, either he is an all-pro, or we have real bad issues with the rest of the team.
Barkley off his acl is the main weapon? I’m talking in terms of where the defense will focus. Golladay is a very good player. Most teams weren’t even sold that he’s a true 1. In fact many believed Marvin jones was the stud WR on the lions during golladay tenure. So yes, Toney will be the main player that gets the offense going and being the “eye” candy to the opposing defense.
For all who were obsessed with pitts. Florida coaches praised Toney as being the spark to the Florida offense. That’s another tidbit that shows what his on field presence means to the offense

This response is way off point. It's not a secret that he needs to be developed. He was not drafted for what he will bring in year 1. He basically had one year as a true WR after coming into college as a QB. This has no relevance to Hill. It has everything to do with the fact that he's raw at the position.

They will manufacture was to get the ball into his hands. That's what's meant by gadget plays. But he's extremely raw as a wide receiver and overwhelmingly in the slot. How much he's used will depend on how quickly he develops and no once can predict that. But I would not count on much early on because he has so little experience there.
Sorry dude. He’s not raw at the position like your staying. He was dominant last season. Route running was elite. Watch the tape. He’s used all over the field. I think your confusing a gadget player with being raw. They don’t go hand in hand. How hill is used is exactly how we will use Toney. Just because you have one full season at WR, which isn’t true in toneys case, doesn’t make him raw.
WRs now hit the ground running in the nfl. There isn’t a learning curve anymore. This isn’t 1994. We expect major production from him year 1 and I’m not alone in this thinking.
(10), had 70 receptions and almost 1000 yards receiving in just 11 games, against SEC.
And he produced his best at the end of the season against LSU, when he caught 9 passes for 182 yds, 1 TD + 56 yd rushing and then Alabama when he caught 8 passes for 153 yds and a TD (+ some rushing and returns (211 yds all purp).
I don't think JJ is looking at him as a developmental player, at least not for long.
But you guys acting like he’s coming in as a polished NFL wideout are kidding yourself. He has loads of talent, but lots to learn. I’d be shocked if the open the playbook for him day 1. Much more likely to find ways to get ball into his hands while refining his craft. It remains to be seen how long that will take.
how many rookies don't? But it's not like 2020 was the first year Toney ever played WR. He's played it at UF since 2017, even started and led the team in yards for some games. Had 25 receptions in 2018. For variety of reasons, including injury (missed about half of '19), UF WR talent, etc., he just didn't break out until 2020.
Everyone knows he needs development, just don't agree with the idea that this is a "developmental year". Assuming he picks everything up, I expect him to be very involved in the O by midseason, hopefully sooner.
And I’m not saying they aren’t going to use him either
I just suspect it’s unlikely they open the full playbook to given how raw he is. Very unlikely he’ll be running the full tree year one. But as I said there are plenty of ways to get him involved and take advantage of his athleticism without putting too much in him as a traditional wideout. A lot of screens snd jet sweeps, reverses, and done underneath stuff out of slot I would expect.
Put him in motion, do EVERYTHING you can to keep him from getting pressed at the L.O.S. He just might have the feet that OBJ had, when he was here.
He can be Dan Jones' best friend, when he needs a "go-to-guy".
