NYG-Eagles rivalry doomed Amazon bid for Philly?

Face Pepler : 5/17/2021 11:18 pm
Did the Eagles’ rivalry with the New York Giants help sink Philadelphia’s chance of being chosen as home to Amazon.com’s massive “HQ2″ office expansion?

I think that's a great hook for the story

and if it's true that this exec's possibly joking comment caused a turning point in the conversation about where to put HQ2, then that's fairly jaw-dropping. Not sure I quite buy it.

On the other hand, when I was trying to explain the subject matter of the film "Silver Linings Playbook" to people in my family, and its focus on mental illness, I would say: "Well, you know, it's about Eagles fans."
If true

Then I can't imagine that person will still be in line for taking over after Bezos leaves. I hate the Eagles as much as anybody, but I if someone made a multi-billion dollar business decision on their hatred of the Eagles, I'd fire them.

And ftw, Philly is a pretty up and coming tech city. Amazon would have done well there. Been able to hire at less than NYC/SF salaries and had a very good talent pool to grab from.
I would never choose a primary city.....

Building in such places is a disaster....the unions and corrupt city officials make it impossible....

The suburbs and secondary cities are the future....much like what made NJ such an attractive place...at one time.
No longer....

The large cities are in trouble

Fuck this. I'm giving this guy a raise and his own parking garage. Finally someone is doing what's best for business. Stay the course and learn how to manage the product and discuss the quarterly results and oh, fuck the Eagles. Expedition!

Up and coming? Only took them close to 250 years.
It’s Philly for God’s sake

I think Andy Jassy can just about do whatever he wants lol

He’s only built the most profitable company in the world (AWS) inside the biggest company in the world (Amazon)

And Amazon can recruit top tech talent in Timbuktu, it doesn’t matter where they are
I’m working on the HQ2 construction

it’s going to be incredibly impressive when finished.

I’ve been to the Seattle offices a few times. It’s really nice. The biospheres are very very cool.

I just had the same conversation with my wife last night but for different reasons. COVID dramatically accelerated that telework trend. That is allowing people to move even to other states to get away from deteriorating cities. Don't think just about suburbs here but more exurbs.
I own $AMZN and I approve of this well thought out and considered

Business decision. When you’re in proximity to such garbage, it will surely infest the culture in the building.

Agreed. Maybe coincidental timing or something, but I highly doubt that really had anything to do with it.
Especially when the location chosen is right near another NFC East team...
They didn't pick Philly
Mike from Ohio : 5/18/2021 12:41 pm : link
because they didn't want workstations covered in cheese wiz, guys bringing horse crap to work for lunch and heating it in the shared microwave, and the higher medical costs associated with employees running into poles trying to catch trains.

Those are literally the only people you can hire in and around Philadelphia.

Hi Chris!

For the last 40 years I've been hearing how cities are dying. And in that time all I see are increased population growth in cities with increasing wealth. Over 65% of America GDP is generated by cities and their suburbs. I don't see Fortune 1000 companies high tailing it out of cities and their suburbs. As the saying goes "News of cities death are greatly exaggerated."
my POV is in the middle
UConn4523 : 5/18/2021 1:43 pm : link
people want to live near cities and having a company the size of Amazon near a major city achieves 2 things. First, it gets a crappy area built up quicker. And second, it adds a ton of jobs (25k in this case) which is never a bad thing.

The flip side is COVID has accelerated tele-working and will allow companies to attract top talent without needing to pay for premium real estate.

As for the corruption, that's just something fun to talk about (it exists but not like it used to). I'm part of the HQ2 build and its moving along really well, they have a kickass team on that project.

UConn4523 : 5/18/2021 1:45 pm : link
we haven't yet seen companies (in mass) decrease pay for teleworking. If you don't think that's coming you'd be mistaken. That might not effect veterans but new hires its absolutely going to be factored in.

Its like cord cutting. There was a time where you can reap the financial benefits but in a few short years that's pretty much obsolete unless you completely scale back on your content.
