Former Coyotes coach Rich Tocchet had a second interview with the New York Rangers for their vacant head coaching job yesterday. Tocchet had his first interview with the Rangers last Tuesday.
According to this Gambadoro guy (who is a radio personality in Arizona), the search is down to Gerard Gallant and Rick Tocchet (and the coach not selected may very well be the first Kraken head coach).
Gallant is still in Latvia coaching Team Canada, but he's already interviewed with the Rangers. He is far and away my #1 choice to be the next HC of the New York Rangers.
But Tocchet. Ehhh. The Flyer and Penguins great...Am I the only one getting Bryan Trottier vibes? Haha
178 wins and 200 losses as an NHL Head Coach.
Oh, well, beats Pat Shurmur.
I imagine you'll hear "well, he squeezed every last drop out of that Coyotes roster and helped stabilize the most dysfunctional organization in the NHL."
They need to find some way to get rid of Trouba. I like him just fine but they have such good options waiting in the wings.
Quarter finals start tomorrow, games should be on NHL I think.
I like Gallant but I don't like that he's apparently anti-analytics. I think analytics matter more in the front office but I find it a little concerning.
I lean towards taking some risk with this hire and going after someone in Europe/the AHL/NCAA.
BTW, I completely missed this from Brooks:
If the Puddy Tats let Quenneville get away, and certainly so if this is related to money, then perhaps we should all rethink whether Aleksander Barkov is a slam-dunk to re-up with the Panthers before he becomes eligible to hit the open market a year from July.
NY Post - Brooks - ( New Window )
I read similar stuff from almost every teams fan base about their top pair D.
I don't know those younger guys (except Fox) will ever be as good as Trouba. Lundkvist is good offensively, not sure on his D at the NHL level. I thought Miller showed promise, but also, he may never defensively be as good as Trouba.
and I didn't realize how sheltered his minutes were in WIN.
but I think his floor is a top 4 D. He may not be Alex Pietrangelo, or prime Shea Weber or Zdeno Chara (or now McAvoy) from a shut down D standpoint, but he's absolutely worthy of the top pair, top 4 at worst.
I would overpay for that certainty, and still hope for some upside, but sadly he never evolved into that guy.
As for Trouba, I really liked his combo with Miller. He’s definitely overpaid, but there was some toughness and leadership in him that I wasn’t aware existed. I don’t think he can be moved, so it is what it is (tm Antrel).
I get your take, the contract was too rich, agree, but Wilson-on-Buch-slamming-Panarin doesn't go down the spineless way it did if Trouba is healthy. Before dealing him and further depleting the stores of balance desperately needed--just like I'd like to deal Chytil for value but how do you do that with the shortage of C-men?--Rangers have to inject some talented muscle. What a get Carter would have been!
Team is locked and loaded with d-men currently on and about to be on the roster. I wonder how Drury is assessing them all for potential moves: Fox (for sure), KAndre and Lindgren untouchable? Smith is cheap and versatile. Then Lundqvist (love him), Schneider, Robertson, others I'm missing. Hajec nor Zac Jones would not imo have long term future, based on latter's brief cameo. Even that group as a whole, Trouba adds an element not held in abundance.
- Nils Lundkvist – Salming Trophy winner (best Swedish-born defenseman in the SHL)
- Braden Schneider – WHL East Division Defenseman of the Year
- Matthew Robertson – WHL Central Division Defenseman of the Year

The announcer saying JT Miller was the most notable 15th overall pick the Rangers have made and then pointing out they picked Kovalev there in the next breath had me mad, lol.

Congrats to Matthew Robertson named the WHL's Central Division defenseman of the Year. Robertson will compete against fellow prospect Braden Schneider for the WHL's defenseman of the year. My bet says Schneider
more than a slight exaggeration. Canada lost their first three games of this tournament to the US (5 - 1) and powerhouses like Latvia and Germany.
Granted there isn't a ton of talent in this tournament, but Canada's big names were Andrew Mangiapane, Adam Henrique, and Maxim Comtois - not exactly a set it and forget it lineup.
They beat a Russia team in the QF's with Tarasenko, Orlov, Provorov, and a couple more names, then the US team in the semis who had previously beat them 5 - 1, and the Fins in the finals who had 1 loss in 7 prelim games.
not miracle on ice, but an impressive win, Gallant deserves credit.
He didn't just coach the Jamaican bobsled team to a gold medal here.

Gerard Gallants stock has risen among the teams he’s interviewed with (NYR, Sea, CBJ) based on the challenges faced at the Men’s Worlds and the Impressive march to the Gold medal.
I've said repeatedly he's a highly successful coach with an impressive resume. I wouldn't be upset if he ended up on Broadway. My only concern is why such a successful coach appears to be fired in 3 years or less in each of his last two jobs - despite the success.
I know you fancy yourself an expert on all matters here, but there's no reason to be snarky.
ok
I think that's the holdup. The Hurricanes owner is notoriously cheap and Brind'Amour needs a new contract. Drury may not want to commit to Gallant until he hears what's going on with Rod.
But even if Rod doesn't re-sign in Carolina, I could easily see him join his former teammate Ron Francis in Seattle.
