TE Evan Engram
June 4, 2021
Q. Evan, when you look back on last season for yourself, just how do you assess it?
EVAN ENGRAM: Personally, the season last year, obviously last year, and self-assessment, there were a lot of things I feel like could I have done better. There were a lot of things did I well and there are things that I can build on. Definitely throwing last year away, there was a lot of things to learn from but I'm looking forward to this next season and improving every day out here in OTAs.
Q. When you say there are things you can improve, in this case you can identify that you're focused on this offseason?
EVAN ENGRAM: Really everything from ball security, from blocking techniques from routes, getting in and out of breaks, really everything that goes in doing my job every single day I put an emphasis on to improve.
Q. How much is the whole vaccination issue something you guys talk about as players and what have you sensed is the approach that most players are taking on it inside the locker room?
EVAN ENGRAM: There really hasn't been a lot of conversation. Definitely there's not many medical experts in our locker room. There's some in the training room. So, we don't really talk about it that much. Everybody kind of is in their own lane with that. Everything is kind of their business and the vaccine obviously you want to get as much information as possible but not a lot of conversation going on about that. Really just focusing on getting better each and every day out here.
Q. Obviously this is a contract year for you. You know that obviously. What is sort of your mindset in that regard? This is a big year for potentially a life-changing opportunity for you to make enormous money next year. How much of a motivating factor is that?
EVAN ENGRAM: Honestly my motivation is in the moment right now. All that stuff is in the future. I have no control over that. I have control of what I do today on the field, what I do in these meetings to end the day, and as long as I work hard every single day, improve and do my job for my team, all that stuff will take care of itself.
Q. How are you feeling physically? Obviously last year you were able to move past some of those injury things that had been frustrating for you. What do you credit that to, being able to stay healthy and how are you doing that?
EVAN ENGRAM: You know, I give a lot of credit to a lot of things. Our training staff has been with me from day one through all the training, through all the injuries, and definitely Judge's approach to every day work. Last year was probably the hardest I've ever worked on the field during the season and through training camp, and I think when you work hard every single day, you push your limit, you build like calluses on your body, and you're able to be more durable. You're able to withstand a lot more. Give credit to myself and discipline, taking care of myself but also trainers and the work that Judge implements for us every single day.
Q. Are you in even better shape possibly than I've ever seen you in? I've never thought of you in any way, shape or form being out of shape but these couple of OTAs I've been fortunate enough to attend, you just look like you're in as good of shape as I've seen, and you can feel free to tell me if I'm off base there but I feel like I know what I'm seeing there?
EVAN ENGRAM: No, I appreciate that, I took that as a compliment. Definitely I've been grinding with my team back home. My trainers in Atlanta, we have been going hard and they put me through so much and they had such a great plan for me with speed and agility, through weight training, football work. I just really give a lot of credit to them. They kind of invest a lot in me down at Pinnacle in Atlanta and I give them credit for how I look right now. Definitely after OTAs, anxious to get down there and get another month in before camp. I appreciate that, though.
I hope he does.
A specialist TE is going to have a MVP type season? I like Engram as the 3rd or 4th option in the pass game. A lot of the ire last year was the Giants were making him something he's not out of desperation. I think he has a big year too, but certainly don't want to see us resign him. There's only so much cap room and can't pay guys A contracts that are B players at their best.
“A couple of drops” …. That cost games and a playoff berth
I hope he has a blow away season. I have my doubts
There was one drop against the eagles, and it cost them the game and a playoff spot. Garrett called a perfect play; Jones threw a perfect pass, and Engram flat out dropped it.
There were several interceptions where he looked more like a volleyball player knocking the ball in the air than a football player.
Would love if EE has an MVP type season and we can all enjoy the positive contributions that brings to the Offense and team wins in 2021.
Because he owes us a few...
Now the argument that you don't pay B grade players like they are grade A stars when you have other more important players due for another contract is very pertinent to the discussion of his long term value to the Giants. But I just want to see a majority of the weapons and offensive line on the field at one time for once.
EVAN ENGRAM: Really everything from ball security, from blocking techniques from routes, getting in and out of breaks, really everything that goes in doing my job every single day I put an emphasis on to improve.
Watch Jerry Rice drop a perfectly easy soft pass in end zone - at the 3:15 mark and another easy 3:48 drop by Randy Moss.

EE led the team in targets last year with 109, which was No. 35 in the NFL (No. 4 among TEs). Are you saying you think Rudolph, who was targeted 37 times last year is going to unseat him as the #1 TE?
Of the Giants, among them . ...
Jeremy TD drop against the 49ers in their playoff game
OBJ's TD drop against the Packers in their play-off game
Then there was Amani Toomer, Plaxico Burress, Victor Cruz - all of them, outstanding players but none had great hands
Vision problems can be corrected; Fidgets, I don't know. Maybe.
During the time that Eli was here lay squarely on Eli's lap - he had a bad problem; he often threw a very high ball in the middle of the field. This cause a lot tipped ball interceptions. He basically never got better.
Same-same for Jones.
He had one versus Seattle with a weak pass from McCoy. You won't get any softer than that.
Some were clearly his fault, what I'm saying is that Jones shares some guilt.
DK Metcalf has the same problems, fortunately he has a more accurate QB throwing to him.
Bottom line, Jones will be more accurate when he gets better O-line protection and Engram is not targeted 100 time because the receiver corps is not trusted and he makes it his business to improve.

I never said that. Engram can be extremely effective as your 3rd or 4th receiving option, but inversely effective as the top guy is what I'm saying. Engram is at his best when teams lose focus of him and he gets lost in space with defenses focused on our more talented players, or has a mismatch. Rudolph will be used in the mostly in the redzone and run game, which EE is useless at anyway. Definetly not overrating his addition based on what I saw from him last year, but he does add to league-worst redzone options last year.
I think Engram puts up a monster yardage and ypc season and someone pays him like he's Travis Kelce. I'm letting him walk.

Personally, I'm hoping K. Smith challenges this year and shows he belongs. He faded last year but had a good end of rookie showing. Hard to say but you hope the young guys step up as it makes an Engram easier to let go if he goes the UFA route which he of course will with a big season.

None bigger than Asante Samuel’s drop!

Yes, some of those guys were OUTSTANDING PLAYERS that dropped the ball on occasion.
But this thread is about Engram...
First, let's please just accept that this team sucked last year. I don't care if they were close to winning the NFC East - it was a historically bad division, and all of these teams were bad for reasons that go beyond the performance of just one player.
But from there, the prospect of BOTH Jones and Engram cutting down on their ball security issues really is what fans should be looking ahead to. Engram hasn't had another season with the rate of drops that he had in 2020, so the chances that he reduces those drops by half this year seems likely.

Engram has been one of the highest drop TE since he came into the league. Look it up.
