NFT: Most Underrated Movie You’ve Ever Seen

Daniel in Kentucky : 6/4/2021 2:04 pm
John Milius in is best achievement as a director.
Oliver Stone co-writing one of the most brilliant scripts.
The truly amazing score by Basil Poledouris which originally was supposed to be an 80s rock compilation.
The casting of James Earl Jones as Thulsa Doom, Max von Sydow as King Osric, and the then unknown Arnold Schwarzenegger .

In my opinion the most underrated movie of all time - Conan the Barbarian.

Any suggestions for your most underrated movie as a composition; and in that I mean production, directing, writing, score, casting, acting, etc...

Thanks.

Manhunter
moespree : 6/4/2021 2:09 pm : link
100x better than the Red Dragon remake, and I think it might even be better than Silence of the Lambs too.
Well Gerry Lopez
Chris in San Diego : 6/4/2021 2:10 pm : link
Was in that movie. I just worshipped him when I was growing up ..in fact my first tattoo was his lightening bolt. Living in San Diego I still have to explain to some people that it's a Lopez bolt...not a chargers bolt lol
Speaking of Arnold

I think Predator is underrated as an all time sci fi action movie. An amazing collection of 80s muscle men/tough guys and they get wiped out. Just a fantastic setup to build fear and tension for the finale.
Heat
RCPhoenix : 6/4/2021 2:14 pm : link
I think it's Michael Mann's best film.

Is a good call. Of course I'm a Robert E. Howard fanboi and I have read pretty much every Conan book ever written. So I could be biased there... lol.

Two from Mr. Maniac Tom Cruise... Edge of Tomorrow is pretty high on the list for me as is Vanilla Sky.

Amazing call. Hugo Posh is my fantasy baseball team name lol.

I’ll throw True Romance into the mix.

There is a version from 1953, 1999, 2004, and 2007.
Which version?

2004
I like The Game and True Romance
Greg from LI : 6/4/2021 2:50 pm : link
Girl Next Door, assuming we're talking about the one with Elisha Cuthbert? Eh. It's ok. I do enjoy Timothy Olyphant's performance - he's good in pretty much anything.
Runaway Train (1985)
Gap92 : 6/4/2021 2:53 pm : link
John Voight and Eric Roberts. Really good suspense movie.

Sorcerer (1977) - William Friedkin movie starring Roy Scheider and based on the French movie, The Wages of Fear.
speaking of trains
Greg from LI : 6/4/2021 3:05 pm : link
What was the one about a runaway train with Denzel? That wasn't a masterpiece or anything, but it was a surprisingly entertaining movie.
True Romance
Ceez2.0 : 6/4/2021 3:05 pm : link
.
Quest for fire
GrMtWoods : 6/4/2021 3:05 pm : link
1982, IMHO it has passed the test of time.
Blue Collar is another one you almost never hear someone talk about
Greg from LI : 6/4/2021 3:07 pm : link
Terrific movie. One of Richard Pryors only dramatic roles and he's great, as are Yaphet Kotto and Harvey Keitel in the other lead roles.
Frequency with Dennis Quaid
Jimmy Googs : 6/4/2021 3:12 pm : link
Very entertaining, easy watching flick. Good story line too with backdrop of Amazin' Mets world series win as well...
Annihilation
UConn4523 : 6/4/2021 3:14 pm : link
not many have seen Garland's follow up to Ex Mahina but it too is one of the best modern Sci-Fi movies, and easily one of the best "under rated" movies out there.
UHF (1989)
Klaatu : 6/4/2021 3:17 pm : link
It got buried due to the number of great movies that were released that year, but I like it a lot.

Link - ( New Window )
also the new Invisible Man
UConn4523 : 6/4/2021 3:17 pm : link
with Elizabeth Moss was much better than I thought it would be. There's a point in the movie where you think its going to jump the shark and be super corny and... boy was I wrong, haha.
The Skeleton Key
US1 Giants : 6/4/2021 3:29 pm : link
was looking through a list of "underrated" movies and The Skeleton Key was one that I'd seen and liked.
I’ve got a couple:

Rounders

Good call. For people of a certain age, UHF is a definite quotable.

I referred to Jeff Weaver as Phyllis for his entire stint as a Yankee, and I cannot read snapper on a menu without saying "mmmm very tasty".
My list
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 6/4/2021 4:04 pm : link
Layer Cake - totally slept on in the States

Road to Perdition - for all its star power never really popular or discussed

PCU! Basically Piven doing Ari Gold 15 years earlier.

I want to say Big Trouble in Little China but I feel it's basically a cult classic.

Edge of Tomorrow and UHF are great examples.
Strange Days (1995)
JB_in_DC : 6/4/2021 4:10 pm : link
directed by Kathryn Bigelow. Really cool sci-fi thriller I don't hear talked about too much. My favorite movie I've seen that could be called "cyberpunk" but well worth a watch if you're not into that kind of stuff in my opinion.
Underrated movies...
DCGMan : 6/4/2021 4:11 pm : link
Out of Sight
The Grey
Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut)
Big Trouble in Little China (cult classic but love this movie)
Starship Troopers
I was going to say..
moze1021 : 6/4/2021 4:16 pm : link
Arrival..

but it has 84% on Rotten Tomatoes so I guess not underrated?

I'll go with "Oblivion"

I thought it was a great movie with an amazing score and never got any love...
Slap Shot
BigBluesman : 6/4/2021 4:26 pm : link
my favorite, and I'm not even a hockey guy. It's a hilarious but also poignant comment on the post-industrial heartland. What is "old time hockey" worth when the team is sold and the mill is closing? What rules do we stick to when everyone else is breaking the rules all around us? It's a masterpiece.
Empire of the Sun
I Love Clams Casino : 6/4/2021 4:32 pm : link

The Grey Fox

Big Night
Pork Chop : 6/4/2021 5:08 pm : link
loved that movie
Road to Perdition
Jay on the Island : 6/4/2021 5:09 pm : link
