was the o-coordinator of the Titans last year so they have some inside connections.

Plus it keeps Jones near his hometown roots in the area, it's just as easy to get to Nashville from Bama as it is Atlanta, so it's unlikely he's going to be unhappy going to the Titans.

I love McAfee but he’s obsessed with veteran players and doesn’t understand guys stop producing quickly at a cost to the cap.

That being said, great trade for Titans. That offense made Corey Davis some money this year, Julio will take them to another level for a year or two.

I think they have the potential to be the best play-action offense next year with Tannehill have Jones & AJ Brown running routes and defenses having to account for Derrick Henry.

thinking about this more, I also impressed with this trade from the Titan's cap management perspective. Jones, Henry & Tannehill's contracts all come up in the next few years allowing the Titans to walk away without having to incur dead cap space of cutting them.

Farley is a rookie corner and JJ is toast. Dupree is a nice addition, but curious what he’ll look like without so much talent around him. He also tore his ACL late in season.
Have no issues with

The first three players you mentioned are coming off of an ACL surgery, is a walking DPI, and is a rookie coming off of opting out and a back procedure. Simmons looks like a great player, but I’d still be very skeptical about their defense. If the offensive line can stay healthy, then it might not matter.
Seems like a lot of people are assuming he is the same player he was
PatersonPlank : 6/6/2021 2:02 pm : link
I'm not sure I believe that. He's now 32, and his 2020 stats were down from his other years of 100+ yds per game. If they are only getting a 5 catch, 60 yds per game guy, a 2nd and a 4th is very steep
Julio still had a top 10 catch rate and a ridiculously high

yards per target number in 2020.

AJ Brown is arguably one of the top five receivers in the league. They don’t need prime Julio.

We don’t know what Green Bay offered. Atlanta may have preferred sending Jones to AFC if getting comparable return. I am sure if Green Bay wanted to maintain the lines of communication with Rodgers they would have kept him in the loop of what they offered to Atlanta.

Why? Pitts was one of the top three players in the draft.

Ryan probably has two more years left. And the cap hit on his contract through 2022 is huge. So they are basically stuck with him. I think they are still going to be a pretty prolific offense with Ridley, Gage, Hurst, Pitts, etc.

A couple reasons:

1. Taking a TE in the top 5 (let alone top 15) is just as egregious as taking a RB in top 5. The value isn't there. In the past 10 years TE value comes later in the draft. Tony G is the last first round TE to have an all pro career. If they miss on this pick it's a huge setback.

2. I think ATL is a team on the decline, they missed their window, they need to rebuild not try and reload. It's very similar to NYG in 2018 IMO. The move was to grab a QB, let him sit behind Ryan for a year and then rebuild around him.
Over/ Under on how many games Jones plays?
johnnyb : 6/6/2021 4:28 pm : link
I say eight, and I take the under. 32 years old and damaged goods. Not so sure it was a huge miss for 25+ teams.
Possibly. Atlanta was interested in trading back but didn’t get
Jimmy Googs : 6/6/2021 4:30 pm : link
a good enough offer in their view. And clearly they didn’t like the QBs enough to invest in them versus the dynamic weapon in Pitts.

I actually think Pitts was the final nail they wanted in order to move on from Julio’s salary and likely soon decline. He will replace Julio’s targets and be a star for their next QB after they move on from Ryan maybe next year after they amortize down his cap hit more.

It may sound like a similar story as Giants/Saquon but they are some differences.
Good trade for Atlanta, imo

UConn4523 : 6/6/2021 5:32 pm : link
if it doesn’t work out is such an exaggeration. They can’t move on from Matt Ryan due to his cap hit so they took a weapon to try and win. Jones has had a great career but they aren’t going anywhere with him anymore - they had their shot and blew it and that was when he was still in his prime, of which he no longer is.

If Pitts stinks it will align with Ryan end of tenure and if he’s great, he will be the focal point for their new QB in 2-3 years.

Some people are still having trouble realizing Pitts was arguably the best prospect in the class. But because some guys sucked before him that having nothing to do with him, it can't be. The guy is on his own level as a prospect. I can't think of any guys labeled TE that were. Sure they media likes to blow guys up because that's what they do to promote and hype, but the real analysts had him as best TE prospect to come out in a very long time.

You build football teams by drafting the best players. 3 QBs went before they drafted and they would have had to love the prospect anyway considering the Ryan situation. The draft isn't about just the next year.

Any team that misses on a top 5 pick is a huge step back. If he's great, Atlanta IMO is more than a couple pieces away from competing again, so you have a great talent on a team that still needs a lot of pieces.

I look at a team that wasn't very good last year and didn't really add any pieces to address their deficiencies. If they kept Jones, I could buy that between Pitts/Jones/Ridley their offense is more dynamic, but trading Jones seems to make their WR depth worse unless they plan on paying Pitts at WR. Their running game is also a big question mark. Atlanta seems to be really hoping a lot of guys rebound from last year, especially on OL. Ryan isn't getting any more mobile so they really need their OL to step up.

I understand what Pitts is projected as. But I feel that TE and RB are 'luxury' picks, especially if a guy can't block well, that teams with a lot of other needs shouldn't be drafting in the top 5. Atlanta, IMO is not a Pitts away from competing again.

And if Pitts was the missing piece and ATL is rejuvenated, I have no problem admitting I was dead wrong. I don't see him being the missing piece.
Some fair comments and some not so much.
Jimmy Googs : 6/6/2021 6:01 pm : link
Nobody said Pitts is the missing piece...he is just projected to be a great piece to any passing offense. For Ryan and the next guy...

Pitts is going to be used both as a TE and a WR. That hybrid value is an enormous asset in today's NFL. So I can't buy your argument that drafting Pitts is "as egregious" as drafting a RB. Pitts is a very special, special prospect; and I couldn't care less whether prior TEs drafted high didn't work out. Every draft and prospect is independent of the prior drafts.

To me, he's worth the stretch based on his multi-dimensional value.

You could be right and Ryan is shot. But I don't see it. I thought he played pretty well last year despite some heartbreaking losses and team turmoil. So I could see ATL gambling that Ryan has 2+ quality years left and HC Smith might be able to rebuild them quickly. They could easily finish second in that division to Tampa. New Orleans has huge question marks at QB. And so does Carolina.

They are back as far as they can go, it would be different if Ryan was gone already but he isn’t. Since his cap hit is so high he’s holding them back from taking a QB - no one is spending a too 5 pick on a QB to pay and sit for 2 years.

If Pitts busts they will know by the time they move on from Ryan in which case their rebuild will begin. And teams bounce back quickly all the time, it’s only a huge step back if they continue to make mistakes.
