NFT: What can you tell me about Woodside, Queens?

Beezer : 6/6/2021 4:16 pm
Really appreciate everyone who has chimed in with opinions about places to look for housing as my son begins his graduate school career at St. John’s University in a couple months. He got a pretty good lead on a place with three other people (4 singles, two bathrooms for $4400) today in Woodside. Been reading a little bit online. Seems solid from Internet sources. BBI is usually a great source for on-the-ground info. Thanks all!
If he driving...should work well. Public transport not great

Is Law school on Jamaica campus?
He’ll have his car.

Garage parking. Thought that was a nice plus.
Woodside is OK

But it depends on what part his apartment is in. It's actually a pretty large neighborhood that straddles Queens Boulevard, Roosevelt Avenue, and Northern Boulevard.

I live one neighborhood over, so I'm pretty familiar with the area.

What George and Russ said.

It's OK

Weirdly undeserved by public transportation and some kinds of shopping.

On the other hand, if Donovans is still there, that's a positive.

Whole area was once an Irish enclave, then it splintered into the three areas Russ mentioned.

The need for a car will make different class schedules a pain at times.

That said, by walking down Homelawn Ave to 169 street station and I believe a transfer at Roosevelt Ave or in some areas, Continental Ave, you can get from St John's Law School to Woodside. ( As per Woodside Irish girls who went to St Johns)
Nice residential area

This being Queens, is a diverse neighborhood, with many ethnic food options.

Very close to BQE and a bit further out to the LIE.

Express subway station for the E/F/7 lines, among others. 15 minutes to Midtown/Flushing Citifield
Its in New York

Thanks Bill. Appreciate your input, always.

He’s got a favorable schedule that (we hope) will allow for a job and/or internship by day, and more class time and connecting with profs at night.

The whole city is dangerous right now

Crime is out of control. A lot of it does not get covered by the media.

So your kid needs to have city smarts.

Read Next Door for Woodside. And police crime blotter. That will tell you what is really going on.

I would not be scared away but you need to realize the city is not what it was a few years ago. To be honest, I would be looking in places like Forest Hills
Bigtime working class Irish neighborhood
sb from NYT Forum : 6/6/2021 11:24 pm : link
...at least that's what it was traditionally. Next to Astoria which is a really fun neighborhood, I used to live there in the 90s. A stone's throw from Long Island City and Greenpoint, Brooklyn, two other fun fun neighborhoods.

The further east you go the worse the neighborhoods get. Corona, Maspeth and and Elmhurst are dicey.
East and north of St Johns are the better neighborhoods in Queens
