NFT: USMNT vs Mexico Nations League Final

Zeke's Alibi : 6/6/2021 8:05 pm
First really big test of this team in a game that matters. Got roasted against Mexico last time, but that was almost a lifetime ago when GB was still figuring things out, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt there. Apparently they are thinking about a 3-5-2 tonight, which I don't think he's ever ran out there before. Is that the built-in excuse for GB if they get roasted? I hate the circumstances of him getting hired and I think his player selection is maddening, but he's acquitted himself decently recently. Big win against Mexico and I may start to change my opinion on him.

Thought they played reasonably well against Honduras, just couldn't find the net. Thankfully, neither could Honduras and we locked up in second half. That last minute goal was out of nowhere it seemed, but certainly well deserved.

I'm watching Honduras CR on Paramount, but this game will be on CBS Sports.
Yup,
Jon in NYC : 6/6/2021 8:27 pm : link
went with 3 in the back. I think it'll probably be more of a 3-4-3 with Pulisic and Reyna out wide.

A little surprised Adams didnt get the call given he's fully fit.
Pulisic
Bricktop : 6/6/2021 8:31 pm : link
simply needs more touches. He had the fewest touches of any outfield player vs HNT. That's just ridiculous. Best player in US history needs the ball.

Ream is going to kill us in that spot. Hope I'm wrong. Maybe we can figure out how to finish and overcome it.

Is he really fully healthy though? I definitely think he's coming off the bench at some point.

He wasn't very good against Honduras, quite possibly still jet-lagged. Hoping for better from him tonight.

I thought he was OK. He had some moments running at the D. And you're right, he might be a bit hung over and suffering from travel. But he still needs the ball. No excuses tonight. This is a beatable Mexican team.

Yeah Ream just can't possibly be the 3rd best centerback in the pool. Aaron Long is probably better but he's hurt, but still.
B I agree….he certainly seems like he’s relished the role of being the

savior of US soccer and has brought great intensity since his first cap. I think he’s pressed a little too much in the past, but here’s to him finding the right balance tonight. I think we see a helluva of a game from him tonight.
Honestly, Pulisic was not very good against Honduras
Rick in Dallas : 6/6/2021 9:04 pm : link
He gave away many passes in the final third of the field.
He looked gassed when they subbed him out near the end of the game.
I kept waiting for Dest to make overlapping runs but it never happened.
The best player was Reyna who went directly at the Honduras defense.
We shall see if our midfield can control play against Mexico and not give the ball away.

Not as big as a World Cup qualifier but still an important match to see where the US stands
Unimpressive
Jeffrey : 6/6/2021 10:42 pm : link
The USMNT is not a good passing team and has a slow back four. Not a good combination for a team trying to play out of the back. Berhalter still has not figured out how to use Pulisic and Reyna.

GruningsOnTheHill : 6/7/2021 8:05 am : link
at work today after having been sucked in last night to wait for the outcome. Exciting for sure, but as someone above said, I felt like I was watching a WWF event. If a fan at a baseball game throws something from the stands, they identify & eject him. Why was the US team going over to the Mexican fan corner to taunt them after the penalty goal anyway? Take the high road.

I had the sound off because the missus was sleeping, but I still don't understand why Mexico was awarded a penalty kick--I didn't see any hand touch the ball in the replays.
If they,,
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/7/2021 8:50 am : link
played a 3 man back to get Dest more involved, it didn't work too well as I think Dest had a really poor game. But what last night was about was a shot of confidence. And tis team has now shown resiliency after falling behind a few times now.

They really need to figure the back line out though.

And Mexico is trash from their coach to the players to their fans. And a qualifier in Mexico City is going to be a spectacle - and not in a good way
Tim Ream was attacked all night long until he left the game
Rick in Dallas : 6/7/2021 9:06 am : link
I give huge props to Acosta who replaced him in the back 3.He stabilized the back 3 defense.
Diego Laneiz is going to be a star for Mexico. He was dangerous every time he touched the ball.
IMHO, the referee lost control of the game in the second half. Some awful non calls which in turn made the game uglier in physicality.
having a healthy tyler adams
hitdog42 : 6/7/2021 9:06 am : link
will add a lot to this team.
Sergent is like having a WR who runs great routes and is a good teammate but cant catch- he needs to live on the bench.
Figuring out the best spot for Dest is a must.
ream can be a defensive sub late, but he cannot start- he was horrific.
mckenzie at least bounced back from a bad start.
the playing the ball out of the back with poor ball handlers gives me more anxiety then anything in sport i think.
amazing energy in the game though-- feeling it this AM
first fun USMNT game in a long time
Eric on Li : 6/7/2021 10:09 am : link
seemed to be the true torch passing game from the old guard to the new generation. McKennie and Reyna both exceeded already high expectations. Pulisic is obviously a star. I thought Weah looked pretty dangerous and Acosta maybe found a place. Is Berhalter good enough to keep things going in the right direction?
Just read some reports about what was happening in stands was crazy as
Zeke's Alibi : 6/7/2021 11:06 am : link
game. Fights everywhere, property destruction, people spitting on each other. US Mexico is such a wild rivalry.

CONCACAFs brilliant idea to stop the chants is just so god damn CONCACAF it hurts.

If this was a normal game with 3 subs, we would have got smoked. GB needs to figure out something soon if he’s missing one of the key pieces. That clearly wasn’t it.
I don't

I cringe when networks feel they have to hire ex-USMNT players to commentate. Edu isn't annoying like Twellman/Lalas and has potential. Gooch/Dempsey/Davies were awful last night.

Sorry, pressed "Submit" too early. I think it was marginal, sure, but the arms was away from the body so there was at least an argument to be made for the call. Personally, I agree and would not have awarded the penalty, but I don't think it was BS.
Impact of Losing A. Long
Jeffrey : 6/7/2021 6:32 pm : link
cannot be overstated. The player had really come on in recent years and would have forged a nice partnership with Brooks. Everyone is pounding on Ream (who is simply starting to fade but still working hard), but it was McKenzie who really had some mind-numbing moments last night--not counting the soft call from the game official at the end to award a penalty kick.

I think it is great that the US won and it is always nice to beat the Mexican team and its fans, but overall this US team is a long way from being good enough to take on most of the major squads from Europe. Also not certain that they would even be favored again if playing Mexico.

Pulisic and Reyna need much more up top than Josh Sergeant is giving. McKinnie is going to be fine and hopefully so too will Adams. I cannot understand much of what Berhalter does but the most astonishing is the failure to find time for Musah, who they really pushed hard to bring to the team.
The Musah thing
Bricktop : 6/7/2021 7:20 pm : link
is a real head-scratcher. Not even a late sub in the Honduras game when it was tied. The commentators even made mention of it.

To be fair, the US didn't play well - at all. Other than set pieces, their defense was suspect, Dest was invisible on the attacking end, Pulisic wasn't great - maybe the only two guys worth mentioning in a completely positive light were McKinnie and Reyna. Out of the 16 or so guys who played.

And they still won the game. That's a big positive for me. Recent teams would roll over and die after the quick Mexican goal a minute in.

This was my take. I was so fed up with watching the Yankees that I switched over to this, the first soccer game I've watched since Wojo missed that open net opportunity to steal one vs Belgium a few years ago.

Similarly, I thought Mexico controlled the game last night, and to my admittedly un-trained soccer eye, they looked to be clearly better. Hopefully this US team is on the upswing, though.

I'm so out of it with soccer, I had to google Freddy Add to find out why this "up and coming star" wasn't in the game. The guy is already 32...? He was touted as a sure-fire world class player. What happened there?

But I thought it was a bit low rent for Reyna to fight over the ball to take the penalty. He's 18, I get it.

Aaronson deserved it after a great game and Gio just came on. Would have been a nice reward for playing 80 minutes of excellent fooooootble.

Nit picking a 4-0 dominating win is fun.
