NFT: Isles-Bruins Game 5

truebluelarry : 6/7/2021 7:29 am
The Islanders are in the exact same position they were in two weeks ago against Pittsburgh, tied in the series 2-2 following an inspiring Game 4 win at home and facing a critical Game 5 on the road.

The Bruins are a much tougher opponent than Pittsburgh, but I think the Isles can do it if Barzal stays hot and they play like they did in the third period Saturday when they smothered Boston.

I'm very pleased with the early 6:30 start, just in case we get another OT!

With the way we finished the season and having Lee out for all of this - I’ve been very pleased with the effort. Would love to take this game.
Agree! Islanders really fed off the crowd emotion
GiantBlue : 6/7/2021 7:52 am : link
Love the Identity Line setting the tone both with the hitting and throwing off the gloves.

I felt that losing Anders Lee would be a huge obstacle especially when the playoffs started because we lose our captain, #1 center, a big force both on the ice and in front of the net, as well as his scoring.

However, everyone has stepped up and this group truly plays like a team. As Matt said....there is very little room to create and orchestrate. It comes down to the little things.

Let's see where this team can take us tonight in unruly Boston.

Go Islanders!
Best series thus far

Keep it going!!!!
The Bruins are starting to struggle with the Isles forecheck
Metnut : 6/7/2021 9:21 am : link
and maybe are getting a little worn down from NYI coming at them so hard.

Pit responded strong after a big game 4 last series and Sorokin has to steal the game. Hopefully Isles can weather the storm at the beginning tonight and start to grind away and take control as the game goes on.

Brock and Bailey
KDubbs : 6/7/2021 9:43 am : link
this would be a perfect game to have them have one of their games where they are both on. When they score, we win
The Bruins hit more and obviously have better goaltending but
Eric on Li : 6/7/2021 9:55 am : link
they are so reliant on the perfection line they actually have a similar weakness vs. the Isles as Pittsburgh did - they have to play their top guys more minutes than the Islanders so they can lose some of their effectiveness late in games if they aren't careful. It's not quite to the level of Crosby/Letang where there was a near +5m difference between their minutes and the closest NYI players, but 2-3m extra is not nothing - especially in a hard hitting series.
Islanders can't forget to

Exactly. Too much hesitation. Just let it rip.
Game 4 was the Isles the way they were built to play
Mike from Ohio : 6/7/2021 10:20 am : link
They forechecked aggressively, laid hit on d-men forcing quick decisions and turnovers, and they kept them to the outside in the d-zone. If they can get back to that tonight they can take this one and set the stage to end the series on Long Island Wednesday.

There will be a huge push to start the game tonight from the Bruins. Weather than storm and stay to their game is a recipe to win. Early softies has been an Achilles heal the last several weeks. They need Varly on his game from puck drop.

Let's Go Islanders!!!

GiantBlue : 6/7/2021 11:22 am : link
Framingham, MA. Not much of a sports fan but the two SB losses to the Giants still stings him and his sons/my nephews.

Anyway, he was staying at the house last weekend with my Sister-in-Law. He walked into the family room after we lost game 1 and asked the final score. When I told him, he raised his fists in the air and said "Yay".

He is so annoying. He didn't even know the Bruins were in the playoffs until he visited.

The next morning he came downstairs to the kitchen and sees me sitting at the kitchen table. He apologized for being a bit of a dick the night before which was nice....but didn't stop me from saying:

"It's okay, Jeff. I figure you deserve 100 more moments like that to make up for the perfect season that wasn't so perfect."

Mic drop!

Love those Giants......The gift that keeps on giving!

I researched this info two weeks ago for the Game 5 at Pittsburgh. Being the superstitious type, I feel compelled to do so again, though I'll break it out a little differently here, hopefully providing more clarity.

The Islanders history in Game 5 in a deadlocked series:

4/17/1976 at Buffalo W 4-3 W 6 games
4/25/1978 vs Toronto W 2-1 (OT) L 7 games
5/5/1979 vs NY Rangers L 3-4 L 6 games
4/13/1982 vs Pittsburgh W 4-3 (OT)* W 5 games
4/20/1983 vs NY Rangers W 7-2 W 6 games
4/10/1984 vs NY Rangers W 3-2 (OT)* W 5 games
5/3/1984 at Montreal W 3-1 W 6 games
4/16/1985 at Washington W 2-1* W 5 games
4/12/1988 vs New Jersey L 2-4 L 6 games
5/10/1993 at Pittsburgh L 3-6 W 7 games
4/26/2002 at Toronto L 3-6 L 7 games
5/9/2013 at Pittsburgh L 0-4 L 6 games
4/23/2015 at Washington L 1-5 L 7 games
4/22/2016 at Florida W 2-1 (2OT) W 6 games
5/24/2021 at Pittsburgh W 3-2 (2OT) W 6 games

In a 5-game series the Isles are 3-0 in the fifth game, 2-0 at home and 1-0 on the road.

In a 7-game series they are 6-6 in the fifth game, 2-1 at home and 4-6 on the road (including the game at Pittsburgh two weeks ago).

When winning the sixth game the Islanders have closed out the series five times, losing only to Toronto in 1978 in the seventh game. The five series wins all came in the 6th game.

When losing the fifth game the Islanders have lost the series five times (three times in six games, twice in seven games) and won just once - the famous David Volek Game 7 OT win at Pittsburgh in 1993.

I'm hoping for another big road win tonight and close-out at the Old Barn Wednesday :)
Really fun series so far.
BlueHurricane : 6/7/2021 2:12 pm : link
I feel like the Bruins are far more of a threat than the Yinz were but game 4 was a tremendous win for the Isles. Lets follow the same recipe and steal tonight's game on the road then close it out in the barn in 6. With Barzy heating up its more than possible.
Too bad they're not still in the Boston Garden.

Lucky to come out of that one tied. Need to be more disciplined in their own zone.

And wow is Cassidy a whiner! When they win they played well, and when they lose the refs are against them. I hope he keeps bitching about the refs so his teams focus is on how the deck is stacked against them.

depends on his health. He got hurt in game 2 I think. He didnt skate this morning and i thought he wasnt himself early. rebounds and little misplays on the puck outside of the crease. just didnt seem like the rask from the other games
A lot of defensive zone mistakes in the 3rd
Mike from Ohio : 6/7/2021 9:36 pm : link
They were way too deferential to the Bergeron line and gave way too much space. The time out was good because it did settle them down and get them back to being more calm.

They should be calm and confident going into game 6. That and the crowd should be enough to put this team behind us.

LGI!!!
Hell yea!!!

Lethal Isles PP… who saw the coming?

Boston media/fans complaining about the refs is a joke. They are a dirty team and are getting what they deserve.

Game 6 might as well practically be game 7. Isles need to close this out on Wednesday.

In the post game presser.

"I think they sell a narrative over there it's more like the New York Saints, not the New York Islanders. The exact calls that are getting called on us are not getting called on them. I don't know why. You got the exact same high sticks... You just hope they'd see them."

I love that their coach is that distracted going into game 6.

Keep focusing on the refs, Bruce. Good idea.

Amazing how the isles have gotten into their head
Metnut : 6/7/2021 10:41 pm : link
Now their head coach is going off on the refs. Pitt tried the same thing and it didn’t work for them.

Boston took 194 minor penalties in the regular season. Isles took 130. This series there’s been 12 called in Boston and 9 on the Islanders.

How can anyone be surprised by what’s happening in this series? Boston is just being themselves

Mike from Ohio : 6/8/2021 8:31 am : link
His plan for this series seems to have been to play the Islanders physical style and hope to beat them at it. Now that they are taking stupid penalties and the injuries are mounting for them, he needs someone to blame.

Boston has a lot more scoring skill that the Islanders. While the top line is still managing to score, the second line has been largely absent because they don’t play that game well. Now their backs are against the wall and they know there is just more coming on Wednesday.

Call one of the least penalized teams in the league dirty. Rant about a conspiracy to keep propping up the team everyone thinks is boring. It’s all just to distract how he set up his own team for failure in this series by playing exactly how the Islanders wanted them to play.

...and is just trying to work the refs, from the standpoint he feels he's not getting the calls.

It's the same way Trotz called Bergeron a cheater at the circle a day before.

Islanders have had a rabbit's foot in their back pocket, we'll see how long it lasts.
