Is 2021 Jacob DeGrom
DanMetroMan : 6/9/2021 10:41 am : link
the "best" pitcher in baseball history?
Link - ( New Window )
pretty boring right now
KDavies : 6/9/2021 10:46 am : link
when Brooklyn doesn't play.

Not a large enough sample size on deGrom. If he continues close to this, it is certainly the greatest pitching season in my lifetime, if not modern baseball history.
looking up Nogosek ....
KDavies : 6/9/2021 10:56 am : link
he has pitched exceptionally well this year (and had an excellent year in the minors in '19 as well). Interested in whether that will translate to MLB, as it certainly didn't for his cup of coffee in '19.
Nogosek still
KDavies : 6/9/2021 10:57 am : link
does need to get his control issues, well, under control

Yup. Top-heavy system will do that to you. When short season begins there should be some more names to follow. I'm dying to see what Dominguez looks like for one.

Big start for Szapucki today, his command has been "okay", last start much better. He can't be too far off from joining the rotation
it is nice to see Almora and Guillorme back playing in AAA though
KDavies : 6/9/2021 11:03 am : link
if fully healthy (not that it will ever happen), I don't believe Almora has a place on this team. 5 OFs, you have to go Nimmo, Smith, Conforto, Pillar, and McKinney IMO. Fargas may be behind Almora for options/service time reasons, but I like what I've seen of Fargas more than Almora as well.
I
DanMetroMan : 6/9/2021 11:07 am : link
think Fargas is better than Almora. I don't think McKinney is viewed as a legit option in CF so I'm guessing they value Almora's glove in CF. They kept running awful Maybin out there because they insisted he was the only one who could play CF.

I'd be willing to bet that this is his second to last start in the minors. With all the doubleheaders coming up, Szapucki is set to next start on Monday. That lines him up nicely to make his MLB debut on Saturday the 19th in one of the games vs. the Nationals. He would also be available for the double header vs. the Phillies on the 25th.
..
Named Later : 6/9/2021 11:15 am : link
I was just looking up Szapucki's last start on June 4. Went 5 innings in a 7 inning game vs Buffalo. Left with a 4 - 3 lead. He gave up 2 homers to recent call-up C Riley Adams, but no other hits.

Kilome blew the save, Nogosek lost the game.

That makes sense. I hope it happens that way and it works out for him.

He has to be closer to what he did last start than the one prior. 2 starts ago 4 innings 5 walks. He's only gone more than 4 innings twice, so hopefully he will go 5-6 tonight and put himself in position to join the rotation.
Szapucki
DanMetroMan : 6/9/2021 11:21 am : link
has gone 3.2, 5.1, 4.0, 4.0 and 5 innings. They need to be able to rely on him for 5ish innings per start. I'd monitor Turnbull's health/return from his arm issue. He'd be a very solid addition.
Just sign Porcello
CMicks3110 : 6/9/2021 11:47 am : link
He’s a proven innings eater. Not a great pitcher, but certainly more reliable for 5 than anything we have in the organization. Plus he loves the Mets.
.
DanMetroMan : 6/9/2021 12:21 pm : link
Rough first for "auditioning" Szapucki. Allows a homer followed by 2 singles. He did strike out top Red Sox prospect Jarren Duran. 1 inning 3 hits 1 run 0 walks 1 k #Mets
.
DanMetroMan : 6/9/2021 12:35 pm : link
Szapucki's allows a HR to leadoff the 2nd inning, he's also issued a walk. If this is an audition, he's failing it. 40 pitches to get 4 outs
.
DanMetroMan : 6/9/2021 12:38 pm : link
Szapucki settles down. 2 innings 4 hits 2 runs 1 walk 2 k's 48 pitches, 29 strikes
.
DanMetroMan : 6/9/2021 12:51 pm : link
Rehabbing Albert Almora just went yard for @SyracuseMets
.
DanMetroMan : 6/9/2021 1:02 pm : link
Szapucki allows a walk and then a single. Not a great outing for him so far. 61 pitches to record 5 outs. 7 baserunners, 2 homers allowed
.
DanMetroMan : 6/9/2021 1:08 pm : link
Szapucki 3 innings 4 hits 2 runs 2 walks 3 k's 70 pitches 42 strikes. Presumably will only be able to go 4 innings again. Inability to go 5+ is becoming a real concern
3-4
DanMetroMan : 6/9/2021 1:11 pm : link
Innings per start in AAA is a legit concern at this point
is Drew Smith & Nogosek

Yes, all other 5 or 6 relievers are out of the organization.
Carrasco
GF1080 : 6/9/2021 4:55 pm : link
Feel like he's just going to be out all year.

Anthony DiComo
@AnthonyDiComo
Carlos Carrasco (torn right hamstring) is no longer throwing off the slope of a mound, as he was last week.

"There is no reinjury or anything like that," Luis Rojas said. "We still have to put some more strength in that hamstring before we ramp up his baseball progression."
