How to defend against a tight end

Angel Eyes : 6/9/2021 4:57 pm
So I've been looking at the Giants' schedule and we'll be facing some of the top tight ends in the league, like Travis Kelce (Chiefs), Rob Gronkowski (Buccaneers), Darren Waller (Raiders), Mike Gesicki (Dolphins), and (if he pans out) Kyle Pitts (Falcons). Players and tactics-wise, how do you neutralize tight ends? A safety to thump him once he catches the ball? A tall, rangy SAM linebacker who can stay with him step-by-step? And who on the Giants is best suited to cover a tight end?
find some film on Carl Banks vs, Keith Jackson

and other TEs of the era. It's a clinic.
TE's can change a team cause there aren't nearly as many

game-breaking TE's as there are WR's and such.

They create matchup problems. You need a fast, big LB that can run and a safety to help at times against the top guys.
But honestly I don't know if you can truly stop them just limit them from getting crazy big numbers.

I'm hoping Engram puts it together and makes a good run this year.
Beat em up at the Los, and have a guy

who can cover them who isn't a liability in the run game. It slows the edge player a bit on their rush, but they need to get a solid jam on the TE at the snap so a db can pickup the route.

Single high man, cover 1 type looks tend to work better as the leagues best TEs are masterful at finding soft spots in the cover2/3 between the linebacker and safety.

Luckily for the Giants they have options here, with McKinny and Ryan.

Cam Brown....

He has the size and speed. Can he cover?
If you’re playing against Engram

Just stand about 5-10 yards behind him and wait for him to pop it up so you can grab it for the pick 6.

Xavier McKinney will be an important piece

He’s the player I would want matched up versus the top tight ends that the Giants will face.
Put Engram on him
RomanWH : 6/9/2021 6:57 pm : link
It's not like he's gonna catch the ball anyways.

Sy thinks he can, according to his scouting report.

Hope they draft an Evan Engram ...

The other part of my OP is asking what is the right personnel and who on the team right now would be best at it?

He is comparable stat wise to last year's darling, Simmons.

I'm tired of hearing about "potential" and reading about "flashes." I want a guy who's going to get the job done from right out of the gate.

christian : 6/10/2021 6:26 pm : link
In 1400 NFL snaps, Carter has logged 13 pass targets. I’ll go out on a limb and guess this is because his coaches haven’t viewed him as a pass defender.

make having bodies on defense that can run and cover in man more important IMO, especially against down the seam TE threats. Offense has a huge advantage in the current game in the middle of the field.

We'll see. I expect that he'll be on the PUP list for much/all of camp. In fact, I'd be surprised (but pleased) if he doesn't open the season on IR/return, if he even makes the roster.

The achilles injury is no joke. And he wasn't exactly the sort of superstar that would get a lot of patience in his return.
Patience...appropriately so

This is a 3rd. Round pick and was considered a project.

He was never considered a project. He fell to the 3rd round because he simply wasn't good enough to go any earlier. Fine athlete, good size, speed, etc., but limited as a player.

As Sy'56 noted in his draft preview: [H]e is only a top tier player when the role is simple and he can burst in to a straight line. He comes back down to earth when the game is quickly changing directions and quality reads need to be made.

I'd probably have someone like Peppers, who is about 6 foot, 215 pounds and can cover, playing man coverage on the good TEs
