Just a coach doing the right thing by his players imo

I actually thought for a moment in another thread (Slayton's interview) that the press was gonna try and make a story out of Judge contacting Shepard and not Slayton.

Re-read it and changed my mind. Nothing to see here. ;)
If Judge was around when they drafted LT

He would've claimed he was taking over for Gary Shirk at Tight End.

Except for the part where he tells Shepard over the phone, "Slayton is the guy who should be worried."

But all kidding aside, anytime you spend huge on a free agent WR and then draft another in the first round, the current roster of receivers has to know things aren't going to be the same for them and they will be fighting for their future in 2021. I like Shepard, he's a good player. He needs to prove he can stay healthy more than anything else (but that seems to be the theme in 2021: a roster full of guys who need to prove they can stay healthy more than anything else). If he can have a healthy year, he is worth the remaining money on his contract (whether that's with the Giants are with another team via trade is up to Toney and Slayton).
Classy move by Judge

. . . but yea, Toney was clearly drafted to replace Shepard in the slot.

As the season progresses, you have to hope Toney develops so you know he is the slot guy in 2022. He isn't as polished running routes as Shepard is or was coming out as a #2 pick. But Toney is way way way more electric and can take it to the house any time he touches the ball.

I can see Toney being used all over including RB.

Toney and Shephard are two completely different players. If we cut Shephard next year, we are going to need another consistent type chain mover. That specialist has become paramount in today's NFL and Shep is really good at it. His problem has always been health. They both do best off the line, but you only need 1 WR that plays up and that is going to be Golladay most of the time, unless they want to get him in motion. Even then you can reset him.

If Shep stays healthy this year, I wouldn't be surprised if they hold onto him. It saves 6 million next year and he's certainly worth at least that if he's healthy. Shep is essentially competing with himself to stay healthy, unless Toney shows that he can be that 3rd and 6 chain mover, but that isn't really his game.
I don't necessarily disagree with you about their

respective skillsets - but Shepard's health issues and a potential of $6.5 mil in savings next year are pretty significant factors. Shep may only be one more concussion away from his career effectively being over, and the team is expected to be squeezed pretty tightly against the cap in 2022. I like Shep, but if he doesn't play at a high level this year I expect the Giants will try to mold Toney in to that role in the offense.
Versatility is having 2 guys who play the same position but with

Different skill sets - if you can afford both of them. One guy gets shut down in a game and the other guy picks him up.
Not a bad move by Judge

But not sure it’s necessary. They need more talent and competition at the position. I think they add more next draft.

The thing that has plagued this team for a while (and Shep is a good example of this) is gambling and forcing guys back from injury too early because the back half of the roster is back. If Shep gets dinged with a 2-3 week injury, we are in position to actually have him rest that extra week finally. I'm trying to figure out the amount of games Shep needs to play, his production on the field, and 6.5 million. I'd peg it about 13 games. He stays healthy this year and we cut him, he'll get a short-term 8 million contract as floor.

Lots of Giants fans have soured on his on field play recently, but that's more a function of having to go against teams top corners, especially when in his limited in that situation too and he got a fat contract for a slot guy and he's always dinged as well.
It's possibly true.

I never thought that Toney was intended to replace Shepard, but rather to be used all over the offense exactly as Judge is reported to have told him.

Shepard has become a more reliable and significantly more physical player than when he first came into the league. And while he may see fewer targets, with the other roster additions, he may become even MORE productive playing from the slot. The reverses, sweeps and gadget plays that the Giants attempted to use him in were never all that productive, while they're made to order for Toney, and he may very well allow Shepard to focus on what he does best.
From an ignorant fan position

Shepard is at his best when he can challenge a defense horizontally by finding space in between zones and being sure handed. The problem is when he is asked to vertically challenge a coverage, which I don’t believe is his game. He’s also not the best at beating man coverage. I think they see Toney as a receiver who can definitely beat man coverage and maybe develop into a horizontal threat with better route running.

If you can’t man up every receiver, then you can’t blitz 6 4 plays in a row like the Ravens did. If you can’t man up every receiver across the board then you will have to play zone. If it’s cover 4 or 3 then Shep will have a field day, if it’s cover 2 then Golladay or your TE’s should be the first read. I truly believe Judge when he says that Toney’s success will make Shep’s life easier.
Best thing that could happen for the Giants ...

Is that Toney become the 2nd coming of Victor Cruz (without the bad hands) - the ultimate slot weapon. (That leaves Shep as "odd man out"). I think that Judge knows that Shep knows that that's what this draft is all about. Like "they" say - "It's a performance business, no hard feelings".

Rudoulph (who maybe has 1-2 years left in him) is poised to become Jones' go-to-guy just like Whitten was in Dallas. Now that Garrett is here, I think we'll see a lot of those plays this year.
Victor Cruz had bad hands?

Do you ever say anything intelligent?
Im not sure that was necessary
Joey from GlenCove : 6/11/2021 7:26 am : link
judge doesn't owe him anything

play better and stay on the field or someone is taking your spot.

So maybe Judge also needed to call Saquon too?

Just happens that Victor was one of my all-time favorites ....

Making spectacular plays & doing the cha-cha in the end-zone after a TD, but he didn't have good hands, with a catch rate of 54.2% ....

About Saquon ...

Nobody's going to replace him (certainly not on the current roster); BUT I do think they should have drafted a high quality RB to cover themselves after the Barkley's ACL.
I love the relationship Judge builds with players

From the big things to the little things, he seems to be a coach that his players will later speak about with love and praise.
