NGT: Philip Rivers talking ‘team’ to NC St.

Not sure his personality would've meshed well with NY media. I think he landed in perfect place in San Diego, where there is little media/people are much more laid back.

I was surprised he never missed a game.

There's no way of knowing if Rivers would've gotten it done in the big games of '07 and '11, the way Eli did.

To paraphrase the Beach Boys - God only knows what we would've been without Eli.

I don’t think there are many QBs who could have done what Eli did in the big games. That said, and this is coming from a huge Eli fan, Rivers might have been a better QB over the totality of his career. Same for Big Ben. I never thought Rivers would have been successful because his arm motion was awkward to me. But, he had a very good career on what was probably a much weaker team than the Giants were once Coughlin got the team going in the right direction.

the regular season and MAYBE he'd get through a not so grueling playoff game, but when the chips are down, and you need someone to lead the team in the fourth quarter of a big game he WAS NOT the one you'd want. Crumples like an aluminum foil hat.

Rivers played with a torn up knee in that 2007 AFCCG while Tomlinson kept his helmet on and jacket on while sitting on the bench for the whole game.

and many here would have loved his fiery, competitive attitude...

Yep this is right. We had Big Ben rated close to Eli (supposedly). Rivers was considered below them. The only reason we took Rivers was that was who SD wanted. Big Ben would have been the pick if Eli was sticking in SD.

and somehow managed to play in the AFC Championship game vs the Pats the next week.

Guy was a warrior and a stud. We would’ve loved him here. Glad we ended up with Eli though.

I never quite understood this thinking.

Rivers had a fiery personality, confident personality that does tend to play well in NY. I doubt he would have melted under media pressure.

If we could create an alternate timeline where Rivers was the Giants QB all those years and Eli had remained a Charger...and this thread was instead about Eli, I'll bet a number of posters would have a far different take on the type of personality it takes for a QB to succeed in NY.

In this alternate reality posters would be saying that Eli had a great career and was a great QB, but he would never have succeeded in NY because he was too laid back.

Between A+ accuracy and A+ arm strength, I always prefer accuracy, so long arm strength isn't average or worse.

Not sure how he'd do in NY though. I could see some reporters/WFAN hosts purposefully antagonizing him to get him to say something backpage worthy.

and I think they would have had great success wherever they went amongst the three teams. The big thing all three had were outstanding coaches their first few years to get things in place for success. The Steelers did the best job over the duration of providing the best supporting team imv.

I think Rivers is actually going to be a High School coach.

Do you think Big Ben would have fit better with the media? That media compatibility crap is overrated. The media only cares about writing stories that sell newspapers and now get hits. It is all about advertising space.

He likely would have done well enough under the late Jim Fassel, but not as well under TC.
But while I think his accuracy would have won more regular season games, I’m not sure Reese would have gotten him the kind of talent Smith got him in SD to be any better here than he was there, though all things being equal, I think we are 10-6 or 11-5 in ‘07.
That said, it worked out well. For the Giants.

Eli, Ben, Phil: any one of the three would have had great success when the NY Giants had a good GM, great coaches and a great supporting cast on the field.
Any one of the three would have suffered a lapse of success
when the management staff and then the team went down hill.
It's a team game! Good QBs with good teams win.
I wish all three great success in their post-playing careers because I admired the talent of all three.

I'll take the known and the 2 SBs with Eli.

Though Rivers did play the AFC CG vs the Pats in 2008 (SB XLII was next game) with a torn ACL. Might have been better for SD if he didn't play.
