Had Blake Martinez on yesterday and James Bradberry on today, but they also had an oldtimer on today - Bart Oates!!
Great interview.
- He was on Aqua Team Hunger Force as the ghost of himself!
- Toughest player he had to face? In practice every day - Jim Burt
- Best Phil Simms story - Reggie White picked up Oates and threw him into Phil, sacking him without actually laying a hand on him. Phil starts yelling "C'mon Oates, What's going on?" And Bart said "You try blocking that dude!"
- As a Center. "I was there without being there" Thought that was a great comment
Martinez was amped up and very excited about the season while Bradberry is really laid back. They had to actually show clips of Jabril Peppers talking trash to add some excitement to the discussion!
got a huge boost with the 1985 selection of Bart Oats out of the USFL. The pocket for Giants' QBs seemed to get a lot cleaner/friendlier that season.

Nah. Kevin Belcher was a heck of a center for the Giants in 1984. But he was in a horrific car accident in the offseason and never played again. The signing of Oates saved the day, but if Kevin never got in that accident, I doubt the Giants sign Oates.

That was really sad news about Kevin Belcher!

I read that in his voice....chills man
Oates was a good player and he had good years in SF too. Shaun O'Hara was a similar type center. Athletic and smart but a little undersized in their era's.
Oates was a great dude, and he and Burt (and Matt Millen) were really good friends (Hence a big reason why Burt and Oates ended up in SF together). My friend (well coworker from Quest Fitness really more than friend) Used to babysit / nanny for the Oates kids.
I don't think the cause of death was related to his injury, but I can't remember.

I had forgotten about Kevin Belcher until about a month ago. I just looked him up on Wiki. If the info is correct. There were 2 o-line players named Kevin Belcher with the same birth year, both with short NFL careers. “Our” Kevin Belcher died in 2003 at the age of 42. His injuries affected him his whole life and probably contributed though not caused his death. The other Kevin Belcher died in 1996 at age 35,

"...Taylor on the tackle".
He not only won two Super Bowls with the Giants, but also one with San Fran, and two USFL Championships with the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars.
This guy could play.

For sure, and he left the Giants because they were starting Brian Williams. It's funny because a bunch of guys on those SF teams from that era had multiple SBs with different teams... Matt Millen, Ken Norton, Oates, Burt, Charles Haley.. and I'm sure there are more I'm not remembering... lol
Re current take on OL, I’d give it this season and then ask him that question.
