NFT: Euro 2020 starts today!

Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 6/11/2021 9:37 am
A year later, the Euros gets underway with Italy v Turkey. Always has been my favorite tournament even with the expanded format.

Although France are heavy favorites, I think with the amount of soccer played these last 14 months that players are tired and any team can get hot and make a run.

The Group..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/11/2021 9:39 am : link
with France, Hungary, Germany and Portugal is crazy!

A top team will get knocked out there.

The two teams that come out have to be considered favorites to win it all.
I..

will inevitably root for the little guy that makes it out of the Group. This year's Iceland or Greece
I like England in this tournament
Blue92 : 6/11/2021 9:47 am : link
They have improved since the World Cup and if Stones plays like he did for Man City towards the end of the year, their back line should be much improved.

Their only real issue is Pickford.
I..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/11/2021 9:51 am : link
think Italy may make a run, but I also like two teams in the same group - Belgium and Denmark - I don't know if both will get out.

I'd like to see Germany win just because everyone falls asleep on them and they still are a really tough team.
Ridiculous format
giantBCP : 6/11/2021 10:07 am : link
With some 3rd place teams qualifying.

I doubt Turkey has what it takes to beat Italy in Rome today. Mancini has them unbeaten for 27 straight games.
No Scotland
Marianne at PSU : 6/11/2021 11:06 am : link
No Party!

I'm looking forward to seeing Scotland play this year.
Being both

Sicilian and Turkish, I will be rooting for Turkey to win. Don’t sleep on them, they have beat great teams recently. They always play to their competitions level.
Took the over in the Italy-Turkey game

Italy is a much more offensive squad than usual.
As usual
Sec 103 : 6/11/2021 11:55 am : link
will be rooting hard for Spain, young team and probably 5th best squad, but hey ya never know.
England to me seems to be my favorite to win.

England is never favorite to win. They simply don't know how to play football at the international level regardless of what they do for their club teams.

While I agree, the same was said for Spain for the longest time.... Let me just say it would not surprise me in the least.

I am hoping Denmark can make some noise
Koldegaard : 6/11/2021 1:29 pm : link
We have a very complete team with a lot of young talent, combined with the vets like Eriksen and Schmeichel.
Denmark will beat Finland tomorrow (3-1) and the get the X against Belgium. Then I hope we can beat Russia on the 21st.
Love this tournament.
DCGMan : 6/11/2021 1:33 pm : link
Always cheer for Spain but wouldn’t mind Belgium winning.

This is probably the last chance for its current squad, and they played the best attacking style at the last World Cup.

Great to see the Dutch back in play.

They did take 4th in the WC and are probably more talented now. Southgate stinks though.
I don't think Southgate is that bad

Not necessarily. The third place team out of this group could end up advancing.

One of these squads is not like the others, though!

I know that Croatia hasn’t been in the best form since they made the world cup final, but their heavy underdog status with the sports books seems strange to me.

match was a dud. Turkey looked like they wanted a 0-0 draw and then after they conceded, they looked like they wanted to be home.

Match suspended. Prayers for Eriksen, his family, and Koldegaard, our Danish Giants fan. It was horrible. Fans and players were crying. Eriksen's wife was brought on the pitch, and it was reported that medics had to perform CPR

Just saw it. Tragic.

Let's hope good news is on the way...

UEFA puts out an update

Eriksen reportedly stabilized in hospital - ( New Window )
BHE
ColHowPepper : 6/12/2021 1:30 pm : link
Came on to EUROs thread late, saw your post, immediately went to ESPN, been watching ~half hour. It seems clear that ESPN Production (or UEFA?) has made an executive decision thus far not to air the 90 seconds prior to Eriksen receiving the throw-in (no contact).

Thoughts on that decision? Respect and reverence for the player and his teammates and Finland team, yes. Does the decision not to air seem right to you?
I'm glad they didn't re-air it because it was innocuous yet scary
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 6/12/2021 1:37 pm : link
He stumbled and collapsed face first and the players immediately called for medical support. I rewound the DVR and he was out. Nothing to be gained but to alarm people.
Yet, with the initial UEFA update
ColHowPepper : 6/12/2021 1:44 pm : link
that Eriksen is at hospital, 'stabilized' and 'awake', there is a competing demand to understand the circumstances and the event. For me as a fan, and who has had a daughter collapse in seizure on the field (most horrifying day of my life) due to impact, I still want to know, want to see, it helps me connect better, more viscerally to the event--always liked and have had the greatest respect for and appreciation of Eriksen's play--than listening to these talking heads simply gain time on air. I get there are competing perspectives.

Good thing it didn’t happen in CONCACAF, certainly could have had a boy who cried wolf situation as precious moments to restabilize ticked away.

Sounds like they completely bungled the declaration of death on that one. If it was accurate he would have been brain dead.

ColHowPepper : 6/12/2021 5:49 pm : link
having seen Finland's fans on one side of the Stadium in Copenhagen chanting 'Christiaan' in unison, answered by the Denmark fans on the other side 'Eriksen', over and over, his first and last names reverberating through the Stadium, when my wife came in (she was aware of his collapse) and I recited those moments, broke out in tears, sentimental schmuck that I am.

I thought Erfo (know I have the name wrong, a Nigerian who played in EPL with Sheffield United), on one of the endless panels commenting on whether UEFA should have suspended play until Sunday, should have canceled, should have left the decision to the FAs of Denmark and Finland, was very articulate. He said, about a somewhat analogous situation when a teammate went down and the decision was made to continue the game the following day, that it was worse for his team SUFC, completely flat, having gone home and having the gravity of the injury to their teammate, rendered them less ready to play after 24 hours.

Twellman did not strike me that way. He speaks quickly and pretty articulately, and he referred early on this afternoon, before Eriksen's condition was known to have stabilized, to his 'well known' concussion issues, hard not to be emotional about things like that.
Eriksen's wobble and collapse
ColHowPepper : 6/13/2021 10:22 am : link
Strikes me this AM as I was driving to pick up some fruit and veggies that Eriksen must have suffered a stroke of some kind. Have not been doing any reading on footie web sites or otherwise, but it would explain the appearance of sudden onset of lack of coordination and then complete loss of motor control. CPR and O2 delivery probably saved his life and, hopefully, him from serious CNS damage due to lack of oxygen.
^^^^
Del Shofner : 6/13/2021 4:01 pm : link
Heart attack, I read. They were literally keeping him alive with the CPR on the field.

Netherlands-Ukraine with a well-played first half. Several good chances for the Dutch but the Ukrainian keeper is very good.
Just as I was to remark on the Ukrainian goal keeper keeping them in
