Observation from Mini-Camp: Xavier McKinney

mittenedman : 6/12/2021 3:03 pm

Looks like he took the offseason seriously. Logan Ryan's got these guys locked in. If McK is an impact player on top of everything else they have....wow. He reminds me of a young Kenny Phillips.

Listening to recent interviews, it sounds like Graham is using lots of 3 Safety looks.

after missing all that time early last year due to injury. He’s a player I have high hopes for this year. That safety trio could end up being something special.
I feel like Logan Ryan is getting more and more limited.
robbieballs2003 : 6/12/2021 3:53 pm : link
His true value is in his leadership and to be a player like RW McQuarters or Sam Madison were for the 2007 unit. I like that we have Peppers, McKinney, and Love there along with him.

Robbie: Limited! That’s kind of cryptic. What do you mean?
This secondary, on paper, is Sick!

If they get it together, they could be an extremely good secondary, capable of shutting passing games down. I have high hopes.

Certainly. A lot of fans are hoping this expensive AJax deal pays dividends and that Logan Ryan can keep it together as well.

How nice would it be if this Secondary can rise up to the expectations...

He's physically not the same player he was. It's natural. He's a very heady player but his physical skills are diminishing. I'm not saying he's not productive. Madison and McQuarters were still productive but he isn't a long term answer. I'm saying while his physical attributes are getting worse he is still in the NFL for his brain and leadership and I'm glad he's around to help out the young secondary.

Physically limited? Based on what?
On him switching from corner to safety.

Nobody is bent out of shape. Just amazed that from your recliner you can declare a player finished. So he isn't a CB, neither was Antrelle Rolle.

Lol, we need the season to start soon. People are getting restless around here.
Or just people to stop twisting what was written.
robbieballs2003 : 6/12/2021 8:09 pm : link
I can't say it enough that he is still productive. Not sure why people are insulted when it is said a player is smart and using his knowledge to still be productive. I also never said he was finished. I said as he becomes more and more limited. He's entering his 9th season in the NFL. Players slow down. That isn't some crazy stretch. He was a corner and played almost his whole career at CB. Tennessee had him play the nickel and he's a safety with us. It is a compliment to him that he is able to extend his career playing another position at a high level.

But, enough of that. The whole point was that we have a great blend of vets and young players in the secondary and at safety. I'm glad guys like McKinney can feed off of Ryan's knowledge of the game. That was the point of the post. Having a guy who has had success at outside corner, inside corner, and safety and having all that experience is invaluable. Not sure why we couldn't focus on that.

McKinney was very impressive week 17

He was a difference maker in the secondary and he stood out several times. With a year of experienceI expect McKinney to develop into a pro bowl caliber safety this season.

McKinney was my favorite player in the whole draft last year — I wanted the Giants to trade back in the first and pick him. I smiled ear-to-ear when they picked him in the 2nd.

Ryan is following in the steps of some damn good corners in this league who transitioned to free safety and extended their career. I absolutely love the Giants safety group.

I think of one of the all-time greats, Ronnie Lott, who was a rookie probowl corner and transitioned to his natural safety spot and is a HOF player (same year as Lawrence Taylor). Now Ryan is no LOTT talent wise, of course, but he is heady and he knows this defensive scheme.

In all honesty, this secondary has a shot at being Top 3 in the league if it stays healthy and plays up to speed. I firmly believe that especially if Bradberry and Jackson have shutdown years and Peppers is the player he was for the last 2/3 of last year for 16 games. Ryan will be solid, above average, and a guy like McKinney can make us shutdown good as a 3rd safety/slot corner type who also attacks the LOS.

If we get average pass rush production along with an above average secondary and superb run stuffing, this defense has a shot at Top 8 in the league which is top quarter.

Logan Ryan was a borderline Pro Bowler last year. Any commentary about him being limited based on 3 OTAs is silly
Robbie is dead on
WillieYoung : 6/13/2021 7:48 am : link
Logan was a solid safety last year not a borderline pro bowler. He's a valuable piece of our team because of his smarts and his commitment to winning, not because his althletic talents aren't in decline.

We really do. You keep 10 guys in the secondary and 9&10 are Love and Yiadom? That's the absolute bottom of the Barrel, Love and Yiadom? 2 young fit healthy guys with experience. Find me someone who thinks either has peaked. This is your worst 2 players in the secondary, who had 76 tackles between them last year.

Anyone who wants to ask why 9&10? Because the Giants aren't cutting any of Bradberry, Jackson, Holmes,Robinson, Williams, Peppers, McKinney or Ryan.

With Martinez in the middle and a competent D line, I'm not sure what opposing offense are supposed to do.

I wouldn’t say that Holmes is a sure thing, but a healthy McKinney along with our additions this offseason make for a strong secondary on paper. It remains to be seen if that translates to wins because of the NFL’s anti-defense stance.
