in one of my favorite movies - Charlie Wilson's War. And of course great in so many others. Wholly unlikable in a feel good movie like Rudy. Squealing like a pig.
Most I think are familiar with “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon”, which basically posits that Kevin Bacon is the center of the Hollywood universe. But in actually he’s not - he only the 543rd best center of Hollywood. (Best being the fewest average number of degrees from all other actors. Christopher Lee is actually #1. Ned ranks #50.
A quote from him in one of my favorite movies, Rudy.
"Chasing a stupid dream causes nothing but you and everyone around you heartache."
OK, maybe not the best quote. Here's a better one.
"This is the most beautiful sight these eyes have ever seen."
-Staring out onto the field at Notre Dame Stadium, where you can hear "The Nittany Lion" playing. Which means that Ned Betty's character was staring at The Pennsylvania State University Marching Blue Band

I have no idea what that list means. I mean, Sandra Bullock is 987 and Snoop Dogg is at 635. Higher than Gwyneth Paltrow, too.
back in '99 when he was filming Cookie's Fortune. I was walking to a bar with 3 of my buddies who were on the Ole Miss basketball team at the time. Tall, big dudes. Neddy, not so much. We pretty much spanned the sidewalk in one area, which happened to be where he came around the corner. "Gentlemen, this seems like a veritable roadblock." And Neddy squeezed by us. One of those situations where you don't immediately recognize someone but it clicks just as they're out of view. Always hated I didn't respond to him with, "...and them panties." RIP
I know that over the years many on BBI expressed admiration
for character actors and Ned Beatty was truly one to be admired for his work. I recall his role in the TV movie based on the true story "Friendly Fire" where he portrayed the father of Michael Mullen who was killed in Vietnam and the anguish faced by the family especially the mom played by Carol Burnett
Thornton, I'm only going to ask you this one time...
which for me is one of the most underrated television shows of all time. I recall it was overlooked for "Miami Vice" when it was on the air, and by "The Wire", another David Simon production, afterwards. In any case, well worth checking out if you can find it anywhere.

Homicide - Life on the Street was brilliant television.
His monologues to Howard Beal in Network is one of my favorite...
Did he ever win an Oscar?
